A few important lessons I learned working in the hospitality industry.....

1. Never ask your staff to do something that you would not do!

2. Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit, wisdom is knowing tomatoes don’t belong in a fruit salad. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

3. You can only cut so many corners before you are going in circles

4. Measure twice, cut once.

5. You learn to solve problems on the spot.

6. You learn emphaty

7. Everyone deserves respect (until they don't)

Signs You are Dating a Hotelier......

You will get to know their guests despite having never met them.

You will know how Mrs Lim loves yelling at people for giving her the wrong newspaper. How Mr Jason always empties the breakfast croissants. How Mr Peter is always seen checking in with different women......🤣

You will hear about the couple fighting in room 802. Or, about the naked woman in the hallway, or the rude guest who threw money on the floor.

You will be the sounding board for all their funny, entertaining, sometimes sad or enraging tales from the hotel world......👏👏

It All Starts With Good Customer Service.

Big or small, old or new, the success of a hotel will depend on good customer service. And the small details truly make the difference.

Over the years I have learned that.....

1. You can’t rely on one single ‘wow’ element (such as an amazing view) to carry your whole customer experience.

2. The importance of trusting and empowering all members of a team, to allow them to make on the spot decisions that can help a customer or improve their experience.

3. Being ready for when things do go wrong and then being flexible in providing a positive and quick reaction to help turn a situation around.

4. Inspire your business with some simple customer service values, to set the tone of your culture and to steer the way with a common language and ambition of delighting your customers

5. Remembering your style of leadership often rubs off on the people around you, from the language, tone and words you choose with your approach.

6. Listen, acknowledge and respond. That is what good customer service boils down to.

7. Offering some kind of positive gesture, such as an apologetic tone or a simple adjustment to the room rate, would have gone a long way towards rescuing what had been a so-so experience at best. These are always the fastest and easiest gestures any business can offer, to achieve a positive reaction and solution.

Above all else, always show integrity and graciousness; the fundamental principles that every customer should have the satisfaction of experiencing.
