On July 25, 2024, the Badagry Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (BACCIMA), in collaboration with the Alaba International Market, Electrical Section Secretariat in Ojo, and with technical support from the Federation of West African Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FEWACCI), hosted a highly successful workshop titled "Export Under ETLS and AfCFTA." This workshop provided an invaluable opportunity for stakeholders to gain deeper insights into the processes and benefits associated with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS) and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The event attracted a diverse group of participants, including business owners, traders, policymakers, and representatives from various governmental and non-governmental organizations. The workshop aimed to foster a better understanding of ETLS and AfCFTA, emphasizing their importance in facilitating trade within West Africa and across the continent.

One of the key highlights of the workshop was the active participation and engagement of the Nigeria Customs Service, Seme Area Command, represented by Comptroller Timi Bomodi. Their contributions significantly enriched the discussions, providing practical insights into the customs processes and procedures related to ETLS and AfCFTA. The Nigeria Customs Service's expertise helped demystify the complexities of these trade agreements, making it easier for participants to understand how to navigate them effectively.

In addition to the Nigeria Customs Service, the workshop benefited from the collaborative efforts of several other critical agencies, including the Nigeria Immigration Service, Seme Border Command; the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA); the Port-Health Seme Border Office; and the Nigerian Shippers Council. Each agency brought its unique perspective and expertise to the table, creating a comprehensive learning experience for all attendees.

The Nigeria Immigration Service, Seme Border Command, represented by Comptroller A. Abdullahi, provided valuable insights into the movement of persons across borders, highlighting the importance of efficient immigration processes in facilitating trade. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), represented by Commander DF Owen, addressed the critical issue of ensuring that trade practices comply with national and international regulations on illicit drug trafficking, emphasizing the importance of maintaining high standards of integrity and compliance by not encouraging or participating in banned substances.

The Port-Health Seme Border Office, represented by Mr. Ojomo, shared essential information on health regulations and requirements for travelers, ensuring that participants were well-informed about the health standards necessary for successful cross-border movements. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Shippers Council, represented by Mukhtar Yakub, provided guidance on how they have resolved and provided solutions to the challenges faced by traders. Their practical approach to resolving these challenges helped participants understand that they are open to addressing all challenges nationwide.

The success of this workshop is a testament to what can be achieved through cooperative efforts. The collaboration among various agencies and stakeholders demonstrated the power of unity in addressing complex trade issues and finding practical solutions. By working together, the participants were able to gain a holistic understanding of the ETLS and AfCFTA frameworks, equipping them with the knowledge needed to leverage these opportunities for business growth and regional economic development.

Moreover, the workshop underscored the importance of continuous education and capacity-building in the business community. It highlighted the need for ongoing dialogue and collaboration between the public and private sectors to ensure that trade policies and practices are effectively implemented and beneficial to all parties involved.

The workshop on "Export Under ETLS and AfCFTA" at Alaba International Market was a resounding success. The knowledge and insights gained from this event will undoubtedly contribute to the growth and development of trade within West Africa and beyond. The Badagry Chamber of Commerce extends its deepest gratitude to all the collaborating agencies and participants for their invaluable contributions and looks forward to future collaborative efforts that will continue to drive economic progress and prosperity in the region.
In his remarks the President General of Alaba International Market Chief Camilus Amajuoyi (Uzochukwuwara), Electronics Section said that the event is an historic one and will be longed remembered in the anals of the history of Alaba International Market.
The President of the Badagry Chamber of Commerce, Alhaji Fatai Adegboyega was the leader of the BACCIMA delegation.
