Three Killed As Ebonyi APC Politicians Battle For Control Of Power.

At least three persons including a Police Inspector attached to the Tactical Squad have been confirmed killed in a gunfight that erupted at Ekoli Edda community in Afikpo South Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, over a superiority power tussle among two APC political gladiators from the area.

The Chairman of the ruling, All Progressive Congress, APC in the State, Stanley Okoro-Emegha and the immediate past Local Government Council chairman who is equally the party's Federal House of Representatives candidate, Eni Uduma Cjima are at the center of the fracas.

A source at the local community told africafirstnews.com that the incident which occurred on Monday as the world was celebrating the boxing day, was a shoot out between operatives of the State government controlled Ebubeagu security outfit attached to the Ebonyi State Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Stanley Okoro-Emegha, and some armed youths said to be loyalists to the immediate past Chairman of the Council Area who is also the Party's House of Representatives candidate in the 2023 general elections, Barrister Eni Uduma Chima.

Apart from the three dead persons, it is gathered the home of the APC boss was equally set ablaze.

The State Governor, Dave Umahi who visited the troubled community on Tuesday, was quoted as having ordered the Police to immediately arrest and prosecute the two political gladiators, Stanley Okoro-Emegha and Eni Uduma Chima.

Someone who was at the scene as bullets flew from different directions said the Ekoli Edda faceoff which finally burst out in an open gun shootout was the fall out of a long time political superiority contest between the two politicians of the same ruling APC in Ekoli Edda community.

Our Correspondent narrates that the immediate cause of the violence was a supposed December 24, 2022 youth election in the community which the APC State Chairman, Okoro-Emegha, reportedly kicked against as it saw the loyalists of Eni, emerge as principal officers of the community's body.

As the story has it, the APC boss had registered displeasure over the outcome of the election and drew the attention of the new Chairman of the Council Area, Chima Ekumankama who was said to have nullified the election and called for the group’s disbandment.

The development infuriated the Eni Uduma Chima camp and on last Monday, as Stanley Okoro-Emegha was on a visiti to the community, some irate youths allegedly opened fire on the APC Chairman, and his Ebubeagu orderlies, engaging them in a gun duel.

In the process, a youth leader identified as Eseni Egwu was gunned down and confirmed dead at a private hospital in neighbouring Ohafia community.

Angered by his death, the youth of the area mobilized and went on a rampage, killing Eme Orji, a younger brother of the State APC Chairman as well as an Inspector of Police attached to the Special Police Unit of the Ebonyi State Command.

They also set ablaze the village house of the APC Chairman, his Toyota Hilux van, and a Toyota Sienna Space bus belonging to the Ebonyi State Police Command's Tactical Teams, among others.

The Ebonyi State Police Spokesman, SP Chris Anyanwu in a statement in Abakaliki confirmed the incident stating that two suspects among the irate youths have been arrested, while the two political gladiators in the middle of the whole imbroglio have been placed in protective custody to douse the tension in the area.

Shell Accepts To Pay 15m Euros Compensation For Oil Spills In Niger Delta Communities.

The environmental rights group which has championed the over 15 years legal campaign for the protection of the rights of three affected oil spill communities in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, Friends of the Earth Nigeria has announced that four Nigerian farmers and their fellow villagers are to receive 15 million Euros from the Nigerian subsidiary of Shell as compensation for oil pollution in their villages.

Shell has equally agreed to install a leak detection system to prevent future oil spills, according to a statement issued by the Executive Director, Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria, Barrister Chima Williams in Benin city, Edo State on Friday.

The statement notes: "this historic victory at the Courts and the acceptance of Shell to do the needful is a victory for all".

In 2007, the farmers and fishermen, together with Friends of the Earth Netherlands, had initiated legal proceedings against the headquarters of Shell in The Hague because of the oil pollution which took place between 2004 and 2007 in the villages of Goi, Oruma and Ikot Ada Udo.

At that time, Friends of the Earth Netherlands, together with lawyers Chima Williams who is the current Executive Director of ERA/FoEN, and Channa Samkalden, took up the case and have been in Court since 2008.

The proceedings took so long that all the original claimants in the suit - Barizah Dooh, Chief Oguru, Elder Friday and Alali Efanga, have since died but, victory finally came after over 15 years, as the farmers and their fellow villagers are to receive compensations.

Eric Dooh, a Plaintiff in the case says: “The compensation we receive from the Court case in the Netherlands will enhance a total transformation of the community people and myself in terms of reinvestment in our environment. It will be a relief for all of us when the money is finally paid as compensation for our losses after a long time of legal action against Shell".

Reacting, the Executive Director of the ERA/FoEN, Chima Williams said: “Justice may have been delayed but it has now been served. The resilience of the farmers, their communities, and determination to make Shell pay is a model that will galvanize other impacted communities in the Niger Delta and elsewhere to act and stay on course. Shell’s acceptance to pay compensation and install leak detection system is both unprecedented and signals victory for all parties – the victims, environmental justice campaigners and Shell. Further more, if Shell can do this, it means that there is no hiding place for any corporate polluter as they may run, but cannot hide from the long arms of the law".

A member of the Board of Environmental Rights Development Foundation, Nnimmo Bassey told africafirstnews.com, “The victory of the Niger Delta farmers is a testament that Big Polluters may run but will find nowhere on earth to hide because they will be sought out. We celebrate the farmers still alive to savour this victory and believe the spirit of the deceased four Niger Delta farmers and others will now rest, but corporate polluters will never rest until their operations and attitudes in respect for their hosts, protection of their environment, livelihoods and humanity is guaranteed".

The affected communities are celebrating since the news of the acceptance of Shell to pay them compensations broke. The Paramount Ruler of Oruma(Yiba-Ama) community, HRH Pere Wapeabiama David Amakiri, says, “Though the compensation Shell agreed to cannot replace human life, we have been able to show through our patience and determination in the last 15 years that peoples power will always triumph corporate behemoths. Shell has learnt a good lesson”. His counterpart of Goi community,Mene Stephen Kobani advised:“We anticipate that other co-travellers in the fossil fuels industry will now understand that the fires the Niger Delta farmers and fishermen lit in 2008 will continue to rage until they pay up and clean up for their mess in every Niger Delta environment”.

The Nigerian case is unprecedented being the first time in history a corporate headquarters has been held responsible for the actions of their subsidiary in another country

Residents Scamper For Safety In Abakaliki As Gunmen Strike Ebonyi. [Watch video]

There was reported panic in several parts of Ebonyi State in the South Eastern region of Nigeria during the early hours of Monday as residents who had gone out for their daily activities scampered for safety over news that gunmen had invaded Abakaliki, the State capital.

Unconfirmed reports had put the casualty figure at four persons when suspected gunmen said to be enforcing a five-day sit-at-home ordered by a factional leader of the outlawed separatist agitation group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Simon Ekpa, allegedly struck at Ezzamgbo in Ohaukwu Local Government Area, some few kilometers away from the Abakaliki city centre.

A source had claimed of yet another attack in the early morning at a local market in Isieke, a community hosting one of the campuses of the Ebonyi State University, setting the market ablaze in order to scare away traders who they accused of disobeying the sit-at-home order.

Reports equally had it that another set of gunmen who rode on motorbikes invaded the Ahiaofuru market located on the outskirts of Abakaliki town, on the Abakaliki - Enugu highway where they disrupted businesses after attacking a provision shop and set some vehicles ablaze.

As the news spread in what a resident described as coordinated attacks by the suspected gunmen, residents of Abakaliki and visitors alike quickly rushed to shutdown businesses and civil servants closed offices, while motorists, tricycle and motorcycle operators withdrew from the roads, turning the city into a ghost town in just minutes.

Videos obtained online by africafirstnews.com showed people, presumably traders and buyers at the popular Rice Mill market in Abakaliki seen scampering for their safety, and another which location could be ascertained showed suspected gunmen boasting of their powers.

Both videos could not be independently verified by our reporter at the time of this report.

However, the Police in Ebonyi has dismissed the incidents and called various reports of attacks by suspected gunmen as mare false alarms, designed by mischief makers to stir fears and apprehension on the people.

LABOUR PARTY CRISIS: NWC Holds Emergency Meeting, Sacks Key Officials.

The internal crisis rocking the Labour Party, seen as a major contending force in Nigeria's 2023 general elections, took a different dimension on Friday after the Party held an emergency National Working Committee (NWC) meeting in Abuja.

An insider source told africafirstnews.com that the emergency meeting was summoned to specifically address the deepening internal leadership crisis in Ogun State which was fast assuming a national dimension.

It was gathered that the Ogun State Chairman of the Party, Michael Ashade was suspended indefinitely, while the entire State Executive council was dissolved.

The NWC equally relieved the Acting National Publicity Secretary of the Party, Abayomi Olufemi Arabambi who also hails from Ogun State, of his position.

The Labour Party National Secretary, Umar Farouk who addressed Journalists after the meeting, said the Ogun State Chairmen was suspended over alleged anti party activities.

Supreme Court Affirms Gov. Umahi For APC Ebonyi South Senate Election.

The highest and final Court in Nigeria on Friday affirmed that the incumbent Governor of Ebonyi State, Engineer Dave Umahi is the rightful candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Ebonyi South Senatorial seat in the 2023 electiion.

This followed the dismissal by the Supreme Court of Nigeria, an appeal filed by the only female contender for the ticket, Princess Ann Agom-Eze, challenging the submission of the name of Umahi to INEC by the All Progressives Congress.

A five-man panel of the Apex Court led by Justice MO. Kekere-Ekun held that the appeal of Princess Agom-Eze who claimed that she is APC’s authentic candidate for the zone, lacked merit.

Also, the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja had on 30th September, 2022 upheld the judgement of the lower Court which affirmed Umahi’s ticket.

The legal tussle which has now ended with the decision of the Supreme Court, had started after the 28th May, 2022 APC Ebonyi South Senatorial district primary election was won by Chief Austin Umahi, in which Agom-Eze emerged second.

At that time, the Governor was in the race for the APC presidential primary ticket in Abuja, but lost to Alhaji Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a former Governor of Lagos State.

After his loss at the presidential primary, Austin, Governor Dave Umahi's younger brother was said to have willfully withdrawn from the Ebonyi South Senatorial seast contest and returned his APC ticket to the Governor, a development that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), disagreed with.

The matter went before a Federal High Court in Abakaliki which faulted the ticket transfer process, but did not make a consequential order as to whether Princess Ann Agom-Eze was the rightful candidate, instead the Court ordered a fresh primary election within 14 days.

That poll held on 31st July, 2022 and was eventually won by Governor Dave Umahi.

Agom-Eze disagreed with the judgement of the Abakaliki Court and headed for appeal where she equally lost,as the Court of Appeal backed the fresh APC primary which produced Governor Umahi as the candidate, stating that poll was observed by relevant stakeholders including INEC.

The Supreme Court on Friday agreed with appellate court’s decision thereby putting to an end all litigations as it affirmed Governor Dave Umahi as the real and authentic candidate of the APC in the Ebonyi South Senatorial zone contest.

Vacate Offices Immediately, Court Orders Ebonyi LG Chairmen, Councillors.

Justice Fatun Riman of the Federal High Court sitting in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, on Friday, 9th December, 2022 sacked all the Chairmen and Councillors of the 13 Local Government Areas in the State, ordering them to vacate offices, immediately.

The same Court had in an earlier judgment delivered by in August 2022, nullified the Local Government Council elections conducted by the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC), on July 30, 2022, wherein the candidates of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) emerged winners.

The judgment followed a suit filed by Otu Eleri and three others, challenging the conduct of the Council elections in which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC), and the Ebonyi State government were named as respondents.

The plaintiffs had asked the court to, among other things, declare the election undemocratic and unlawful, having failed to comply with section 150 of the Electoral Act 2022.

They had contended that the Ebonyi State government and the State electoral umpire failed to avail them of the exact laws used to conduct the election, which the ruling APC claimed it won across the 13 local government areas and the State government went ahead to inaugurate the Council officials.

In its judgement this Friday, the Court ordered that all the Chairmen and Councillors of the 13 Local Government Areas in the State who came into office through the nullified elections, be removed with immediate effect.

NEW CASH WITHDRAWAL LIMIT: We Won't Be Rigid - Emefiele.

Nigeria's apex bank, the Central Bank of Nigeria has allayed public concerns over its newly cashless policies, saying the recently introduced policy on cash withdrawal limits was not meant to hurt anybody, but to strengthen the nation's economy, assuring that the operators will not be rigid on it following criticism from the Senate, business experts and some stakeholders.

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele spoke to Journalists in Daura, Katsina State on Thursday, shortly after meeting with President Mohammadu Buhari at his private residence.

The CBN had on Tuesday unveiled a revised cash withdrawal limit with a maximum of N100,000 cash withdrawal per week for individuals and N500,000 cash per week for companies, but the Senate faulted the Apex bank on the implications and timing of the policy, arguing that it might worsen the tight economic environment while stakeholders are worried about the possibility of implementing a hitch-free cash withdrawal limits in communities with 'blind spots or poor network connectivity'.

But, the CBN Governor who said he has the backing of the Nigerian leader to go full hug in the implementation of the cashless economy policy, explained that more and more countries that are embracing digitization have gone into cashless and that the new policy on cash withdrawal limits is not targeted at anybody,

Emefiele who said he visited Daura to greet the President and brief him about what is happening in the Central Bank as well as the economy, revealed that President Buhari was very happy and said "we should carry on our work, no need to fear, no need to bother about anybody".

According to him, it's just meant for the good and development of the Nigerian economy and we can only continue to appeal to Nigerians to please see this policy the way we have presented it.

Responding to the objection of the Senate, the CBN boss said, "Well, the Senate of the Federal Republic is National Assembly, they are legislative arm of the government and from time to time we brief them about what is happening and about our policies and I'm aware that they have asked for some briefings and we will brief them".

"But I think it's important for me to say that the cashless policy started in 2012. But, almost three to four occasions we had to step down the policy because we felt that there is a need for us to prepare ourselves and deepen our payment system infrastructure in Nigeria".

"Between 2012 and now 2022, almost about 10 years, we believe that a lot of electronic channels have been put in place that will aid people in conducting banking and financial service transactions in Nigeria".

"We heard about people talk about some of the people in the rural areas and the truth is that even online banking, as I was coming out to Daura, I saw a kiosk that has super agent today. It's because of the way we felt that there was a need for us to deepen the payment system infrastructure. We have 1.4 million super agents that are all over different parts of the country, all local governments, and all villages in this country".

"And I have told my colleagues, some of their names are already on the CBN website and we will publish all the names of all the super agents. And having super agent which is different from the banks, which is different from microfinance banks, which is different from other financial institutions. Having 1.4 million of them is as good as having 1.4 million banking points where people can conduct services".

"We think, Nigeria as a big country, the biggest economy in Africa that we need to leapfrog into the cashless economy. We cannot continue to allow a situation where over 85 per cent of the cash that is in circulation is outside the bank. More and more countries that are embracing digitization have gone into cashless".

"I said it at different fora, that this is not targeted at anybody, it's just meant for the good and development of the Nigerian economy and we can only continue to appeal to Nigerians to please see this policy the way we have presented it".

"We will be reviewing it from time to time, how this is working because I cannot say that we are going to be rigid. But it is not to say that we will reverse, it is not to say that we will change the timing, but whether it is about tricking some amount to be a little bit higher or a little bit lower, and all the rest of them. We will do so because we are humans, we want to make sure that we make life good for our people. We do not want to make life difficult for them. So, there is no need for anybody to worry, the Central Bank is monitoring what is happening and I can assure everyone that we are up and alive to our responsibilities and we will do what is right for Nigeria and Nigerians".

"I can only just assure you that it will go round, let us just be calm, luckily the old currency continued to be legal tender till January 31, 2023. So, I want to crack a joke, both the painted (new notes) and unpainted (old notes) will operate concurrently as a legal tender. But by January 31, the unpainted one will not be useful to you again, so please take it to your Bank as quickly as possible," he added.

On the amount of the old notes the Central Bank has been able to get back to the vaults, he said, "we have taken more than have a trillion and in the Bank, we also have close to half a trillion. But, what we have done in the Central Bank is to move more people from different departments into currency processing so that they can process this cash as quickly as possible and from there, Banks can now move what they have with them."

Emefiele said that there were so many things happening concerning issues bothering on the currency and the fact that only yesterday, the new currency has reached the banks and they believe that the banks will begin to distribute these currencies to the members of the public who are their customers.

This, the CBN Governor said, it would assure the President that things are going on well about the currency as well as issues bothering on the cashless policy that CBN recently introduced.
