Education must positively influence everyday life and the developmental growth of the child. If not then it isn’t useful to the child nor the society!
The goal of education reform should be to make an impact that produces change.

Mute Efe wrote this post for high capacity people. I think it is worth reading👇

CAUTION: This is for high-capacity people.

The first time I was introduced to the concept of goal-setting I was taught to set goals in different areas of my life.

The result was about 30 to 40 goals that needed to be achieved.

Nobody told me that each goal you set was like a bag of cement on your head.

Even worse than that, nobody told me there was a concept called Planning that must accomplish each goal.

All I knew was specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-bound.

Oya na.

So, here I was carrying 40 bags of cement that I called goals with no idea what to do with them.

The result? Weighed down, burnt out, and unable to breathe.

Help, I can't breathe.

That is the state of many people today. You set too many goals only to be weighed down by the same goals you have set for yourself.

There is someone in the consulting room right now telling the doctor that his body is just doing him somehow.

They have carried out different tests and are still unable to find anything wrong.

Some of these issues are caused by invisible weights that we carry.

Every goal you set has a weight tag. It becomes an invisible weight that you carry and it is only lifted when that goal is achieved.

That is why it is dangerous to set too many goals. Especially when you are still new to the concept of goal-setting. You will only get weighed down.

Many people are reading this right now who are on this table. You wake up from bed with palpitations.

You were in bed for 7 hours but you woke up tired. Because all night, your mind was busy figuring out how to go about the 57 goals you set at the beginning of the year.

Your goals are too heavy for you to carry.

Every goal you set needs a plan. And planning is work as you will find out in my soon-coming book, January is not for Planning.

While there are no rules as to how many goals you should set as individual capacity differs, it is better to feel the satisfaction of setting three goals and achieving all three than setting twenty goals only to still achieve three.

Goal-setting does not give you bragging rights. There is no glory in telling us you have 20 goals you want to achieve this year.

Anybody can come up with a list of goals they want to achieve. The problem is in planning for each of those goals.

Goals don't achieve themselves. It takes a good plan to achieve any goal.

In the book, January is not for Planning, which will be out on the 25th of November, I talked about this issue and recommended that you set goals in a few areas that you know will have the greatest impact on your life.

Then you should let other areas of your life run on auto-pilot. I also explained the concept of auto-pilot. There are some areas of your life where things are going well. You don't need to change anything just yet.

When you do this, you will have the energy to channel to the few areas where you have set goals. This way, you won't feel overweighed and spent.

Have you been in this situation where you were literally weighed down by your goals?

Are you in that place right now feeling spent and burnt out because of your unending to-do list?

You can share your experience with us by posting a comment.

Also, my recommendation to you is that you preorder my soon-coming book, January is not for Planning. It is the solution you seek. It is the answer to your prayers.

The Discipline Problem (Part 2)

What is discipline?

Discipline has become a very misunderstood word. To many, it means controlling the child, punishing the child, and implanting fear in the mind of the child. For others, discipline connotes allowing children to do as they please because controlling them is bad.

These are extreme views as discussed previously and very damaging for the child.

True discipline, on the other hand, is training and correcting a child so that your child’s moral behaviour and mental faculties are refined to do what is right. Discipline is training by instruction and practice, by encouraging the child to follow specific rules so they can gain self-control. It is a process.

The purpose is to teach the child the difference between right and wrong, it is not to inflict pain or to punish. Discipline also ensures that you can keep him and others safe.

Do you remember those videos where children are off the hook, misbehaving like there is no tomorrow? Throwing books and even furniture all around the room? This is dangerous territory; it is important to help children learn from very early on what kind of behaviour is acceptable. Beating them up when misbehaviour occurs is not the way forward.

Another purpose of discipline is to help the child develop self-control. The child must learn to master his emotions, to achieve this it takes intentionality on the part of the adult, and time for the child to undertake the journey to achieving this goal.

The child must also learn about the consequences of his actions, and the cause and effect of the decisions he makes.

This takes time. One of the things I appreciate about taking one’s time to help the child become self-disciplined is that once they’ve got it, this skill is theirs for life. Discipline is no longer for the child something that is forced on them, but it becomes a part of them. When this happens, you are no longer going to worry about what they will do, instead, you will be confident that your child can hold his own.

It is only when your child has achieved self-discipline that he is independent. Independence means that the child can reason and act correctly on his own. This should be our ultimate goal.

So how do we achieve this?

We will explore this in the next post.

A couple of days ago I shared a post about Preparing our children emotionally for School resumption. The reason why this is so crucial is because we cannot gloss over the effects of Covid - 19 on our children.

The post was really centered on what teachers and schools can do to help our children.

Here's the thing, there are a lot of things our parents can do to help them as well.

So this one is for all the parents including myself:

Enjoy!

There is a change like no other in our world today.

Are we going to let the change overwhelm us?

Or are we going to overcome the challenges it brings?

The Yoruba people have this adage: Ònà kan ò w'ojà - meaning, there is more than one route leading to the market!

So in other words, there are many other routes to get to where you are going.

Which route were you on before Covid -19 struck?

What route must you take now?

Ònà kan ò w'ojà is all about reckognising that we may need to find our way through to another pathway or other pathways to achieve our goals.

Come and join us and be inspired.

Dancing is what we used to do a lot when I was a child.

I now find that a lot of children struggle to move to the beat a lot these days.

Therefore at Addlo Montessori (birthed from The Kidzone) one of my big things is my children must dance.

Thank you Addlo Montessori Brand Masters (our wonderful Staff) for making today so much fun filled with music movement and bata steps.

On the Issue of Teaching the Child

On the Issue of training a child.

I keep getting a constant question, ‘So how do I teach my child to behave? How do I teach a child to be disciplined without shouting, yelling and flogging?’

Some go as far as telling me that it is not possible, that children who don’t get this special treatment of the yelling and shouting game, not to talk about the use of the cane wonder of wonders, will become rotten to the core!

Not so true.

But before you start saying this woman with her ‘Stop using the cane’ agenda, that is not what I want to concentrate on today.

Let us deal instead with what we teach our children first, how we do it and how this feeds into how to teach discipline, and most importantly doing it effectively.

Please note the following:

We have an obligation to teach our children how to live life to the full as responsible members of society. They must learn what is culturally and behaviorally acceptable. At the end of the day an education devoid of the above is a failed system!
Children learn what they live, what they see lived out around them, not what you say! We know this don’t we?
Therefore to teach a child you must watch what you are doing around them!

The child is always learning. Beware they are watching and learning all the time. So do not tell them to be good and you are not. You are their role model.

Some useful tips for understanding Maths.

Last time we talked about preparing a 1 to 3 year old for Mathematics by 1. Learning to count- one on one correspondences 2. Singing Nursery Rhymes - specifically the Number songs and 3. Reading Number books together.

So now your child can count probably 1 to 5 or 9 what next?

3 to 4 years
1. Continue to work on counting one on one correspondences and match the numerals to the correct objects. Using actual objects (counters, matchsticks, coins, stones, straws, erasers etc. It is best that the objects are similar. Don't use toys, matchsticks and coins mixed together for this work, to avoid confusing the child) or worksheets. Work on number and quantity recognition from 1 to 9.

2. Next work on understanding the concept of zero. Now this is actually borrowed from Montessori Maths. I find that this is so crucial for the child to understand at this stage before you go on to Number 10.

Use worksheets or actual objects and numerals to do this activity, { if you are Montessori inclined you would be using a Montessori Maths material called the spindle box}

Lay out the numerals in order 0 to 9 and invite the child to pair the correct number of objects with the numerals, (if using work sheets invite child to draw correct number of dots, circles etc next to each number.) 0 will have nothing next to it. Point to zero and tell the child 'This is a number and it is called Zero. Zero means nothing'. Ask 'How many objects do we have here?' Answer would be 'None.'

Add a fun dimension to this lesson, by playing the Zero game. This is done simply by writing out numbers 0 to 9 on paper pieces. Fold them up and give one to each child then tell them to bring objects corresponding to the number on the paper they have, ( e.g. rulers, pencils, books, paint brushes, erasers etc. Prepare the classroom beforehand for this activity by placing the correct number or more for each object. The child with zero will struggle at first to bring nothing! Children love this game and it helps to solidify the understanding of numbers and that 'Zero means nothing.'

There is still much to do. We shall delve into more Maths Tips for the 3 to 4 year olds next time. Have Fun

All about Maths and helping the child understand it.

The curriculum and Lesson diaries for the new term, got me thinking about Maths and the challenges parents as well as teachers face in making the subject accessible to children today. As Maths was not my favourite subject in school I can understand why this may be an issue.
MATHEMATICS though is so important that we cant afford to gloss over it. I will endeavour to provide some useful tips in the next few days that will help you get confident and able, to help your kid and students out..

Today we will look at why MATHEMATICS is so important and basic things you can do around the house to encourage a love for maths.
Maths is part of our everyday life. For example " how many oranges are in the basket, plates on the table, sweets will I get today?" Counting and doing it accurately is very crucial. We work and get paid, if you were not able to do simple arithmetics you could loose money.
Maths exercises are good for the brain. You need Maths skills to understand a lot of scientific concepts. A good Maths result at WAEC can only give you a great stepping stone.

Things to do include to provide the right environment, good diet, rest and sleep, social and fun activities. Make maths part of your home life. This so natural to the MONTESSORI method. Count objects, spoons, plates, biscuits and sweets. Make shopping lists, discuss quantity needs. Compare objects, size, length and weight. There is so much to do....
