Tourism Commissioner Reiterates Vital Role of Women in Nation-Building at Elevate Africa Dinner

The Honourable Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. T**e Benson-Awoyinka, joined Her Majesty, Olori Atuwatse III, and Her Excellency, Dr. Jewel Howard-Taylor, at the Elevate Africa Dinner held on December 9, 2024, at the J. Randle Museum, Centre for Yoruba Culture and History, Onikan, Lagos. The event celebrated the pivotal contributions of women in shaping the future of Nigeria and Africa.

In her remarks, Mrs. T**e Benson-Awoyinka lauded the exceptional leadership of Olori Atuwatse III as a beacon of inspiration for women. She reaffirmed Lagos State's unwavering commitment to empowering women through innovative policies and programs focused on education, entrepreneurship, and leadership development. She stressed the importance of mentorship, resource-sharing, and collaboration in building an inclusive society, while urging stakeholders to work collectively to overcome barriers to gender equality.

"Lagos State remains a trailblazer, actively implementing initiatives that position women as vital contributors to growth and nation-building," she stated, emphasizing the state's belief in unity and shared responsibility as cornerstones of progress.

Also speaking at the event, First Lady of Kwara State Professor Olufolake AbdulRazaq, shed light on the challenges young women face, such as early marriages, discrimination, and limited access to education, which have resulted in 76% of inactive out-of-school youth being female. She highlighted Kwara State's proactive steps toward gender inclusion, including the enactment of a 35% gender inclusion law and increased representation of women in leadership roles.

The dinner brought together key stakeholders and distinguished guests, including former First Lady of Kwara State, Mrs. Toyin Saraki, Dr. Dere Awosika, and Mrs. Ibukun Awosika. It served as a rallying call to action for advancing women's empowerment and fostering partnerships that drive sustainable growth in Africa. The event underscored Lagos State's shared commitment with other progressive leaders to championing gender equality and inclusion.

LAGOS TO HOST NINE-DAY AFROPOLIS INTERNATIONAL CULTURAL FESTIVAL

Lagos State Government, in partnership with QDance Centre, will, on October 26, begin the maiden International Cultural Festival tagged: "Afropolis 2024" with the theme 'We Need New Myth.”

The festival will feature displays of various African cultures from different parts of the country and Africa. It will last for nine days at the J.Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History, Onikan Lagos Island, and its environs.

Afropolis is an international festival of arts, creativity and innovation with visitors and artistes expected from Nigeria and different parts of the world such as Kaduna, Kano, Jos, Ghana, Senegal, Lome, Addis Ababa, São Paulo, Amsterdam, Bologna, US, among other European and South American countries.

The festival is modelled after internationally recognised festivals such as the Nottingham Carnival in the UK and will attract thousands of visitors annually to Lagos.

While speaking at a briefing on Wednesday to introduce activities lined up for the nine days festival, Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, T**e Benson-Awoyinka, described the festival as groundbreaking, adding that the rich cultural heritage and creative spirit that defines Lagos metropolis will be projected for nine days.

"Afropolis is not just an event; it is a celebration of our identity, a showcase of our talents, and a testament to the power of creativity to unite and inspire. From October 26 to November 3, Lagos will become the epicentre of African creativity, welcoming artists, innovators, and enthusiasts from across the continent and beyond," she said.

According to her, activities scheduled for the festival include a VIP preview and cocktail on October 26, followed by a grand opening ceremony at The Vibez Stage.

Also, there will be a fireside chat with the Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, on the same day.

On October 27, a carnival procession will be held in many streets on Lagos Island during the official opening ceremony of the J. Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History.
