*Minimum wage saga: Government not broke, anything short of N150,000 a joke —Labour experts*

by Christian Appolos May 26, 2024

Minimum wage saga Government not broke anything short
Some experts on Labour matters on Saturday declared that the Federal and state governments have no excuse not to pay Nigerian workers a minimum wage of N150,000 or N100,000, insisting that government is not broke and should pay workers well.

They noted that anyone arguing in favour of government against the demand of the organised labour for a substantial figure for a minimum wage at a time when inflation has eroded the purchasing power of the average Nigerian, is ignorant of the wastage government officials engage in with public funds.

Speaking with Sunday Tribune, an Associate Professor at Kogi State University, Onakpa Mohammed, said; “If we look at the issue of new minimum wage saga critically, is the government not joking with the whole thing? I believe they are joking with the proposed of N48,000 naira initially, to N57,000 as a benchmark for minimum wage.

“For me, it’s still a huge joke. A government that knows that bag of rice in the market today is hovering around N70,000 to N80, 000, wants to offer N57,000 as minimum wage to the Nigerian worker force. For me, it’s a mockery of the whole idea.

“If we limit our analysis to that of officers working on level 1, 2, 3, in fact generally the junior rank officers in the civil service, it therefore means anything short of N150,000 is a huge joke. The N150,000 that I am talking about is not even close to what the workers desire in the real sense of it. I’m surprised that the government is not looking at the bargain from that axis. And they are talking of something below 100,000. For me, it’s a huge joke. I don’t think they are serious with the minimum wage issue.

“The N500,000, proposed by Labour is really not a bad idea for any Nigerian worker today to earn a living wage. But if the government feels that 500,000 is too much, what is wrong with thinking of 200,000? What is wrong with 150,000 naira? Anything short of that range only means they are joking with the welfare of the people”

“Government generates money in trillions. From taxes to royalties and crude oil, it is unbelievable to hear the government say it is broke and could not afford to pay the Nigerian workers above N150,000. For me, they are not being truthful with Nigerians and it really laughable to say the least”, he added.

On his part, Professor Dung Pam Sha, of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies Kuru, said; “I can tell you that what government is offering will not be able to solve the workers’ basic needs; it will not be able to move them out of the poverty. How does the average worker survive in this biting economic condition?.

“I think that what government is offering is not appropriate and cannot solve workers’ problems.

“Government must be realistic. Many Nigerians are having a feeling that government is asking workers to accept low pay. While government officials go home with fat pay every month. We don’t want a nation of inequality. Our constitution is very clear on this aspect.

“The economic team of government is needs to be alive to current realities. You know that there are group of workers who are not earning high salary, therefore lack the purchasing power, but you’re imposing more taxation and levies. So the thinking is not right. While they are thinking of more money for government coffers, they are not considering those who will be paying the levies.

Meanwhile on his part, labour Business School Lagos, Mr. Ossai Ilome, President, , said; “Government does not have the resources to pay the amount labour is demanding. So it requires that labour needs to be a bit more understanding. This is because government cannot focus all the resources in paying civil service alone. So I think that Labour needs to be a bit circumspect in pushing the wage bill they are currently demanding”, he added.

*THE DANGERS OF SOME COMMON FOODS IN NIGERIA*
Dr. Abayọ̀mì Ògùntoye

I promised to write about *what is killing people in Nigeria today.* Nigerians should be focused on solving these problems instead of fighting over GMO which they don't understand yet. These are what is causing most of the cancer going around now:

1) Ripening agent for banana and plantain. Because people are in hurry to harvest their bananas and plantains. they spray them with Calcium carbide. This is a ripening agent and makes the plantain ripen very quickly. It is extremely hazardous to the human body as it contains traces of arsenic and phosphorus.

So *anytime you buy ripe plantain in the market chances are you are buying plantain ripened with Calcium carbide.*

*Solution* : Buy unripe Plantains and Banana and keep them inside a black plastic for few days, it will ripen naturally.

2) Most Nigerian farmers, if not all of them use a chemical called "Sniper" as an added ingredient for pest control. Sniper is potent and it scares me. It is a DDVP, 2,2-Dichlorovinyl dimethyl phosphate compound. An organophosphate that readily binds to the lungs and kidney causing cancer. It is almost in everything you eat in Nigeria.

Solution : You are on your own here because it is everywhere.

3) Weevil control in Beans with Aluminum phosphide (AlP). *This is the most dangerous food pollution in Nigeria.* Because weevils can destroy the entire year's harvest of the farmer in a few days. They drop tablets of Aluminum Phosphide inside each bag of beans.

They think that one tablet is enough to drive weevils away from the bag of beans. Yes they are right, but that one tablet can drive weevils away from an entire Silo of 50 tons of beans. Do the math yourselves.

Unfortunately, it is now one of the most common causes of food poisoning in Nigeria. It liberates lethal phosphine gas when it comes in contact either with atmospheric moisture or with hydrochloric acid in the stomach.

*Solution* : Eat beans with Weevils.

4) Chicken from China preserved using embalming substances. The same used to embalm dead bodies in Nigeria. This is a cancer causing substance that kills slowing. *_How else do you think chicken gets to Nigeria from China without a proper cooling system._*

*Solution* : Eat only local chicken. don't buy frozen chicken. if you can't see it running around don't buy it!!!!!! Don't eat at Eateries. Stop using your money to buy death.

The farmers don't want to kill people, but they are uneducated and don't know that they are committing mass murders. And then, they don't have the appropriate tools to deal with the challenges they have.

*NAFDAC too, in Nigeria, has become just another self-serving government agency like "we took care of ourselves" NDDC. NAFDAC officials no longer go to markets or farms. They glide around in official cars to go and extort budding manufacturers. They sit in their offices all day discussing bonuses, appointments, promotions and how they were denied the "lucrative posting". Like the _Raw Materials Development Commission_* , and over 100 other government agencies a *useless* and total waste of money.

This is why the European Union, United States don't want to have the Beans, Cocoa, Plantain, Yam and Pineapple exports from Nigeria. Everybody is scared of Nigeria's irresponsible public service and Nigeria's cancer-intense, disease-riddled agricultural produce.

*It has nothing to do with racism or because they are evil white people.*

Britain, the EU and the US repeatedly and tirelessly warn Nigeria to clean up its extremely poisonous farm produce. Nigerians eat killer foods.

Even the Coca-Cola we drink is banned in the UK. A Nigerian businessman lost money trying to export Bottled-in-Nigeria Coca-Cola to the UK as it is supposed to be cheaper here because of lower labour costs. The UK Food and Drugs Office calls the Coca-Cola, Sprite etc that we drink, *cancer-Cola.*

*The EU and the US are simply fed up with the reckless mass murders of Nigerian agriculture.*

Wait. *WAIT ! !!*

Read this all over again and *commit it to your memory.*
If there are people who you don't want to kill, people who you don't want to die, send it to them.
*You are free to copy and forward.*
If we don't do something quickly, the food we eat and that Coca-Cola we drink, is what will kill 150 million Nigerians in the next 9 years.
