Dahlia; Forever Yours!
A special man; Dick Eigenhuis is Dahlia grower in Aalsmeer for more than 30 years."We will continue until it freezes", with more than 100 Dahlia species Dick is a real specialist. Outside and in some greenhouses, he flowered dahlias with top quality and in smaller quantities. Do not expect his Dahlias are colorfast. Each Dahlia shines in her own beauty and colors the garden from end of May to October. Do you know the Dahliaplant needs a lot of water? You can see at the picture how they give water with a sprinkler system.

Dick let nature take its course and says that Dahlia's are difficult to cultivate, "it's much fluff work and it's all handwork". His exclusive Dahlia's go all over the world.

Around the nursery it does not look as slick and tight as in many modern horticultural complexes. You see wasps, chickens that eat the weeds, worms make a breeding ground. The waste from the compost and horse manure are spread between the plants and provide a natural process. Lice in the Dahlia you will not find at Eigenhuis because they are eaten by ladybirds.

Once Dick started with the cultivation of spray roses and lilacs. For growing lilacs you need a lot of storage and in summer this storage was empty. Each farmer had in the past a corner with Dahlias. Today Dick Eigenhuis is one of the last farmers in Aalsmeer. I hope Dick continues with his beautiful Dahlia's at this special place for many years.

Symbolism
The flower symbolizes wealth, power and the message "forever yours." Choose the right color and shape, you make the message even more personal!

Let's talk about fair trade - this week IFTEX in Nairobi so time to know more about our growers... Grower Girish tells his story to Nicolette - show your true colors!

I'm from a growers family in India. We grow coffee, mandarin, rice... When you are young you have to listen to your parents and that’s why I started to study agriculture. I found out I like it.

Why did you decided to go to Kenya?
My father, grandfather and further back family stayed in India. My father was in India a good grower of ginger but I wanted to do something else so I went to Kenya. I like to hunt, to be in the field with the plants and the herbs, I like to be in nature. I learned about the flower business from others and put my own spirit in growing roses.

What makes you different than other growers?
We look forward for the future, what is happening economics, new innovations in processing to have the best quality. I like to work like a Dutch grower with a grading machine. We keep on thinking how to do things better;
We collect all the water, to reduce the chemicals, to use biologic for the roots, worming culture.
Next to this we make our own fertilization with sugar and meal to spray on the leaves to avoid damage by insects. The insects eat the meal instead of the leaves.

Why flower business?
Every day is different and it’s very dynamic to be in flower business. There’s always something to solve and you have to keep your brains sharp. Working international with different kind of people is what I like. I’m also a member of FPC in Royal Flora Holland.

A real teacher according to his employees.
Girish is a real teacher for his employees. He knows everything in teaching. His product manager at Alisha Farms tells me ‘I have never met a man like him’. His name is Mahesh and he loves his work. Girish offers the employees changes to make promotion and he trains them to work with an ABCD system. First the employee has to figure out the problem himselve, have you solved it? No! than I teach you how to do it, but first they have to think by themselves to get the good feeling for their work. We pay them good, just normal.Bring back the experience by nature
The novelty line of the roses is on Akina testing farm. The fragrance roses are coming like Ohara. We have 30 varieties in large commercial testing. Fragrance roses is getting more attention because of the experience we want to have with roses. Going back to basic is going back to our Roots with smell and experience. My Future wish is to find new colors and to work more by nature. To learn from nature I go back to my Roots.

Bio culture
Driving to Ayana we see a farm in the clouds at 2.600m altitude. At this farm Girish works with cows. With the stool of the cows he makes a liquid plant nutriate. Using the Zebu cow is to boost the immunity of the plant; by bringing back beneficial micro organism you add to the soil. To keep the soil alive we use nature. The roots keep more healthy and stronger. No! chemicals in the soil. When you google Jeevamrutha you will find they operate this way in India 3000 years ago. In India they work with spices like garlic and nettle as a liquid for the soil. Spices are also very good for peoples health.
Nicolette; Finding our Roots by nature we focus on the future..
In our concept ROOTS® we select quality flowers from the best growers for florists in Europe.
Fair Trade by Nicolette
I've done research on fair trade and I will give you my opinion;
The real story from Kenya..... high quality roses ensures social & financial sustainability.
Fair trade is fair when everybody in the chain get paid for his work. To know exactly how we can prove transparency of our flowers I had a meeting with Jane of Kenya Flower Council. KFC is a private company and owned by the growers. Since 2008 they became professional through accreditation by Sanas. Sanas audit KFC and checks if they follow the national rules.
KFC checks on environment, water regulations, wages, social and financial sustainability, health facilities, local rules, contribution of social funds. In Kenya 80 % of the growers is member of Kenya Flower Council. When you are member they audit you once or twice a year.
The KFC certification starts with KS 1758 and stands for Kenya national standards for good Agricultural practice.
KFC silver certification is fair trade together with Global GAP, KS1758, Tesco - TN10
It is also possible to become a KFC gold member. This is up to the grower himself when he wants to pay for his employees kids funds and other extra's. It’s not good to make people dependent of the farm by 'giving' them everything. You have to learn the people to think for themselves and take responsibility for their own lives and for their families.

The Flower and its story....... Peony Sarah Bernhardt celebrates 110 years!
In 1906, the famous French flower breeder Victor Lemoine brings a new peony on the market. This wonderful but difficult to cultivate pink rose he named after the namesake and equally fickle Parisian actress Sarah Bernhardt.
Sarah Bernhardt was the daughter of a Dutch music teacher and a French officer, but was educated by nuns in Paris. When she was sixteen, she left the monastic life behind and went to the conservatory in Paris. Just two years later, she was on stage. She immediately attracted attention, Sarah Bernhardt became rapidly famous far beyond the borders. Bernhardt was known for her exaggerated and pompous way of acting, completely to the standards of the time. Nowadays we still love Sarah Bernardt!

In your Shop.... a tip of Hydrangea World
Hydrangea has everything what you may expect from an attractive flower: beauty, an unprecedented long flowering period and surprisingly easy care. To sell Hydrangea to your customers in prime condition, the Hydrangea growers have several of tips for you.
Nutrients; Put the flowers in sufficient fresh cold water and always use cut flower food. For fresh hydrangea this extends vase life for over a week. With this vase life will be 3 to 4 weeks. Therefore always supply your customer, at purchase, cut flower food.

Floral foam; Hydrangea (preferably classics) can be stuck in floral foam, with enough water. Sufficient pre-watering is important here. Cut off a piece of the stem with a clean and sharp knife or trimmer for better water absorption.

Do you also have a memory with Peonies?
Peonies have fascinated me since childhood. They announce spring is coming and the seasonal flower shows us the impermanence of life.

James Star of My-Peony has memories with Peonies he wants to share with us. "When my sister had just given birth to her son, I saw a vase with peonies 'Coral Sunset' beside her childbed. These peonies are an Emotion for me... every time when I look at my nephew I see again the beautiful bunch of peonies change over time, like my nephew"
With Peonies James thinks of moments that are important for him. You give with this flower the memory of THAT special moment. This passion and love you can share with your loved ones or with your customer...
Read the total story and find your peony at www.flowersense.nl

Why curls the end of the stem of the Calla on the vase?
This is due to cell voltage of the stem in water. You can counteract curling by doing sugar in the water or sticking an adhesive tape at the end of the stem.
Personally, I think it's just as the Amaryllis very decorative..
This bouquet is styled by Pascal Bakker. Event by Simply Calla, Marcel Jansen Kapiteyn John Martijn Warmerdam ea

Be aware...........With flowers we make people Happy!
Last week I was invited to arrange a flower show at the south coast of Norway.
I offered the Dutch growers the possibility to show their flowers to the Norwegian florists and with flowers of 45 growers and their promotion brochures I went up North. Together with my husband Ron, he started to clean 200 vases and I did the flowers ... we were in a flow to go.....

*Explaining to the florist's how to treat the flowers,
*to show novelties ; Fritillaria, New Spray roses, Piccolini, Calla, Hydrangea, Nerine, Lilies, Helleborus
*To tell that Bouvardia is really improved in vase-life because of improved methods of cultivation.
*A scoop with the new Vanda Tayanee® White. Lilium Pumilum,
*The best Lisianthus growers
*With Ranunculus Pon Pon Malva winner of the Golden Tulip.

With our concept we highlight the grower with his product and we share knowledge with the florists, and Yes! we succeeded..

Because of flowers we will be more aware..... With flowers we make people Happy!

It's a blessing to work with your flowers. THANK YOU !
