"whenever you innovate, you lose something. You find this most obviously in music. The idea that there are notes, within a frame, within a box that is repeated after three or four beats. This is an innovation, but it kills creativity."

In this session on Thursday 4th July at STUSTUSTUDIO, we will delve into four radically different approaches to innovation, experienced by a small and engaged audience. Our speakers, each distinct yet interconnected, will offer diverse perspectives that promise to challenge and inspire.

Marissa Memelink: Artistic Researcher

Human tendency to rely on technology for solving complex issues, known as techno-solutionism, often leads to new problems rather than solutions. Marissa Memelink, an artistic researcher at SETUP, explores this phenomenon through interactive installations and workshops. Join her at The Most Interesting Person to uncover your own techno-solutionist tendencies and examine the societal beliefs behind this behavior. Memelink, a creative researcher and moderator specializing in art, technology, and society, focuses on generative art and develops frameworks for analyzing it.

Daniel Simu: circus artist and inventor

Marissa’s Most Interesting Person.
By day you’ll find him juggling hoops, people or fire; by night, working with wood, code and electronics. Driven by an enthusiasm for surprising others, he explores the weird, the quirky, the wacky and the impossible through his artistic performances and installations.

Allard Krijger - Electronic Music Pioneer

Allard Krijger is the most interesting person of Julien Chaptal. Known as FRAKnoise, is a leading figure in electronic music. His career of over two decades has solidified his reputation as an innovator in the field. FRAKnoise is known for his mastery of unconventional instruments like the theremin and Soma Terra, which bring a distinctive quality to his performances.

THE FUTURE OF JOURNALISM

How do we document our own society? What role do technological changes play in this? Danielle Arets explores new forms of journalism in the rapidly changing social landscape. Lianne Cremers uses visual anthropology as a starting point to involve her respondents in research design. Journalism students Farah and Adaja participated in the alternative educational program Nimbin, focusing on the sociological and artistic exploration of society instead of quick journalism. As an assignment, they started "Most Interesting Person" routes through Amsterdam. One leads to the characteristic former working-class district, Jordaan. The other route centers around an exceptionally interesting doll shop in Amsterdam Noord. By empowering the community with the power of selection, their journalistic perspective transformed. Want to join us on an alternative journalistic route through Amsterdam?

SUBCULTURES THROUGH THE GENERATIONS

Once a haven for free spirits, philosophers and adventurous travelers, Amsterdam was known as a realm of daring experimentation. We explore the historical significance of this environment, reflect on its remains in the present and imagine its role in the future.
In this conversation, three generations discuss their contributions to the city as program makers, place makers, and consumers. They will share music and have deep conversations with you - the audience - while introducing their “Most Interesting Person”. Together we explore the creation of space and time for the unknown to thrive and flourish. The trail starts with Geert van Itallie, Paradiso's director and previous manager of De Melkweg, bringing his extensive experience in the music industry; Angelo Bromet, owner of Prospect Eleven, advocating for a more equitable society through platforms that bridge communities and industries; Maximilian van Britsom, a creative strategist at Amaru, sharing the importance of Amsterdam's diverse cultural breeding grounds.

Curious about how different generations create culture in this city? Join us at the OBA on November 12th for Van Het Pad in de Bieb.

SILENT VOICES OF AMSTERDAM

In the library, we can read books, meet people, converse, and participate in inspiring meetings because we share the same language.
But what about all those unspoken languages of the city? How do we learn to listen to them?
There are worlds that we can hardly imagine and that we don't learn anything about at school, even though they are closer than we think. We
speak to interpreters who introduce their world and teach us their language. Participating are philosopher Renate Schepen, independent filmmaker Juul van der Laan, versatile artist Dorit Weintal, acclaimed explorer Arita Baaijens, dynamic entrepreneur Paulus Boike Tojo, MBA, Frits de Beer and Emke Idema who are storytellers and artists, and transformative philosophy meditation specialist Yara Vrolijks.

To take hold of a different perspective and hear the unheard voices of our city, join us on the 12th of November at Van Het Pad in de Bieb at the OBA.

The Dark Pages Of Our History

Amsterdam, often hailed as a textbook example of a liberal democracy, paradoxically carries the echoes of its illiberal past. The imposing mansions of slave traders, their facades etched with history, and the poignant 'stolpersteine' commemorating those deported and murdered during the Second World War, serve as tangible reminders of this dual narrative. While Amsterdam has in the past hidden away these dark chapters of its history, our contemporary society is increasingly facing them head-on.

In today's Amsterdam, we find ourselves wrestling with the enduring legacies of the past, not just in memory but in the pressing issues of our time. The dialogue on these matters has gained momentum, as exemplified by this panel discussion featuring Nina Siegal, a distinguished culture writer for The New York Times and the celebrated author of "The Diary Keepers." Her numerous writing awards and grants underscore her influence in shedding light on these complex issues.

Accompanying her is Karwan Fatah-Black, a Dutch historian of Kurdish-Iraqi descent whose research delves into Suriname and the transatlantic trade. Beyond academia, he actively participates in debates surrounding the lasting impact of Dutch colonialism, forging a vital bridge between the past and the contemporary struggles that continue to shape Amsterdam's society today.

Join this insightful conversation at "Van Het Pad In De Bieb" on the 12th November at the OBA.

AMSTERDAM IN THE EIGHTIES

There is something in the air that brings back the turbulent 80s and 90s in Amsterdam. It is the connecting factor in the three book presentations by three diverse writers, whose careers do not consist of writing books. They have put their personal experiences into words and now present their stories, guided by moderator Yvonne Twisk, cultural entrepreneur and former publisher.

First up, visual artist Harald Vlugt whose work has graced the Venice Biennale and the Orange Hall in Nagasaki. He is followed by Sabine van den Eynden, a versatile writer with a background in television and a passion for storytelling. Finally, there is a reading by Daniel Boissevain, a seasoned actor in films and TV series who is set to make his mark in the literary world with his debut novel, "The Magical Child."

Catch these diverse visual storytellers at Van Het Pad in de Bieb on the 12th of November to take a dip into our beautiful city in the 80's.

We are so excited to see one of our speakers for our event "Van Het Pad in De Bieb" Daniel Boissevain be featured in the de Volkskrant this week.

Read his interview to find out more about his childhood growing up at the artist commune Ruigoord in the 1980's before joining us in a multi-disciplinary deep-dive into Amsterdam's 80's at the OBA on the 12th of November (where our sources tell us you might be able to buy Daniel's debut novel "The Magical Child" 🤫).
