On 5 August 2013, Mark Post presented a proof of concept for cultured meat - the world’s first lab-grown burger. This concept eventually turned into the company Mosa Meat in 2015. Recognizing his pioneering work in sustainable food production, we asked Mark to join our SingularityU Benelux faculty a year later.

Many have acknowledged the potential of Mosa Meat and the need for alternative and sustainable food sources. In 2021, Leonardi DiCaprio became an investor and advisor. Currently there’s already $96 million invested in the company.

Amongst the Mosa Meat team is a familiar face in the SingularityU community. Jonathan Breemhaar - who joined and won our Global Impact Challenge in 2017 - was one of the first employees. He has been focusing on the scalability of cultured meat.

Recently we had Ronit Elyoseph (Business Entrepreneur, VR Researcher at Advanced Reality Lab) sharing her greatest SU memories. She joined our Executive Program in 2018 and still looks back fondly to her time in The Netherlands.

Joining the EP actually shifted her professional life in a new and exciting direction. Experiencing the effective power of Virtual Reality inspired Ronit to pursue a PhD research on VR for social good.

One of the Global Grand Challenges identified by SingularityU is Water. More specifically, ample and safe water for consumption, sanitation, industry, and recreation for all people at all times. For us in the West, this has mostly been a given, but worldwide, water scarcity is actually a huge problem, with 4 billion people affected by water shortages.

Even though our planet is filled to the brim with water, just 3% is freshwater, and only around 1,2% is accessible for drinking water. With this in mind, our faculty member Sid Vollebregt started Elemental Water Makers in 2012. Their solution: desalination by renewable energy. With 30+ projects worldwide, Elemental Water Makers is providing clean water to those in need. We’ve had quite a dry summer in Europe - according to the European Commission we're seeing the biggest drought in 500 years. We might need solutions, such as Elemental Water Makers, here soon as well.

Since 2012 the SingularityU community in The Netherlands has hosted numerous Global Impact Challenges in which the winner receives a scholarship for the Global Solutions Program in Silicon Valley. This summer we will connect with some of these alumni so they can share their life changing experiences. In this post Danny Wagemans will share his

Danny joined the Global Impact Challenge in 2016 - the first time that SingularityU Benelux sponsored the scholarship. Being just 20 years old during the final, he became our youngest GIC winner. Danny holds multiple Master of Science degrees in Physics and Nanotechnology and is now working on his MBA at Columbia University. We’re very much looking forward to Danny’s next initiative in the climate tech industry!

Learning from nature. Darwin's theory of evolution has long been widely interpreted from a competitive perspective, with the concept of the survival of the fittest.

Nowadays, the theory is being more and more interpreted from the perspective of cooperation, connection and reciprocity. What we learn from nature is strongly determined by the glasses with which we look at nature.

We live in the Anthropocene: the era in which the influence of man has become the dominant factor for the future of life on earth. Our vision on the relationship between man and nature is constantly being revised, but is now gaining momentum. This has had a major impact on the way in which we have dealt with nature. We have come to see it as an object of use and have exhausted it. Therefore the Anthropocene brings us new questions and dilemmas about the human-nature relationship.

The great crises of our time – the ecological crisis, the climate crisis, the Corona crisis – require us to consider the question: who do we think we are on this earth? We will have to reassess our position in relation to nature. From there we can gain new insights. We need to re-assess our attitude to nature and ask ourselves: are we owners, stewards or partners of nature?

Arash Aazami is an activist entrepreneur and inventor with an education in modern music. He has an irresistible urge to discover how “things really work”.

After a career in internet pioneering he made the switch to the energy domain in 2006. His focus has always been on the cross section of energy, digital tech and societal impact. He is founder of Unify.energy, developing local peer-to-peer energy systems that balance themselves, and chairman of Universal Right, working on the recognition of renewable energy as a human right.

His vision is that of an Internet of Energy, connecting billions of users to one another and to an abundance of renewable resources. He derives his inspiration from the arts, from music, meaningful encounters, and most of all from nature.
