Every Thursday night at Simplon: intimate concerts with a national and international flavor. UP biedt live muziek op een intiem podium.

Iedere week vind je nieuwe, onbekende maar altijd ervaren muzikanten op ons bescheiden podium. Donderdagavond is hét moment om te ervaren wat uiteenlopende muziekgenres te bieden hebben en waarom ze de moeite waard zijn om te beluisteren. Wij vinden bands, rappers, knoppendraaiers en faderschuivers leuk. We doen het niet om groots binnen te lopen, maar uit liefde voor de muziek. Denk jij dat de na

Every week, we bring you new and lesser known, but experienced musicians whom you didn’t realize were around and are worth checking out. Thursday is the night to come check out which varying genres of music have to offer. We like bands, rappers, knobturners and fadersliders who are like ourselves. + Kilo +++ + DJ Pocketbread.

Hello dear friends, hope you all had a nice summer. We’re kicking things off at UP again this thursday! And we have some great acts lined up.

Taupe

Taupe are a British non-jazz trio, believing that taking risks only works if you’re willing to fail, and the band shares an understanding that there’s no wrong way to play. A decade of friendship has conjured a spooky telekinesis that anchors the band, even when their improvisations teeter on the edge of total collapse. The three-piece are an explosive live band, veering from taut metronomic precision into intentionally turbulent, unchartered territory. A DIY ethos feeds their wonky compositions, colliding sour scatter-skronk with sludgy, doom-inspired riffs, as showcased in their anarchic debut album, Fill Up Your Lungs and Bellow (2017). Their latest album Not Blue Light (2020) is Taupe’s boldest record yet, inspired by the night when their car was almost stolen. Their exhilarating sense of discovery has earned them support from the likes of BBC 6 Music’s Freak Zone and BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction and Freeness, as well as support slots with acts such as Deerhoof, Richard Dawson & Circle and Melt Banana. Fizzing with ideas, Taupe are a non-jazz band that prizes surprise over any specific sound.

Kilo +++

Kilo+++ is a DIY and avant-garde electropunk two-piece from Groningen. Delightfully camp, Kilo+++ demonstrates urgency through electronics, bordering on eggpunk with
analog synthesizer and drum machine sounds, super special samples, and signal-splitted guitar. Kilo+++ is the newest conceptual utterance from The Hands Off Project, which is an independent punk organization founded by members Tim Daniël Stienstra and Janneke de Boer. The Hands Off Project (T.H.O.P) has played the music of Kilo+++ at T.H.O.P. 06 in Vera before, but now it’s time to take the stage of Simplon UP!

DJ Pocketbread will also be in the house to provide you with some lovely tunes during the evening.

Op zoek naar een podium?

Simplon UP biedt de mogelijkheid voor beginnende artiesten om stappen op de ladder van de muzikale sector te zetten. Elke donderdagavond zullen twee artiesten/bands en een DJ een avondvullend programma neerzetten in onze knusse bovenzaal. Het is de perfecte manier als artiest om jouw muziek en vaardigheden op het podium over te brengen. Daarnaast is het ook een prachtige kans om nieuwe muziek te ontdekken.

Afgelopen seizoen was een groot succes, waarin we een zeer gevarieerd en talentvol programma hebben aangeboden. Dit proeft naar meer, dus gaan we er komend seizoen alles op zetten om die overtreffende trap te behalen.

Deze editie van UP wordt buitengewoon, wonderbaarlijk en extra speciaal.

De vloer van het Simplon UP podium leent zich niet alleen voor muziek dit keer, maar ook voor een korte theaterperformance van de Card Bored Kids: twee kinderen, één fort en lawaaierige attributen. Ook in het café is deze avond niet alleen een dj aanwezig maar ook een kunstexpositie en -markt van verschillende studenten van Minerva.

Qua muziek zal huny langskomen, ook bekend als Luz Mercedes, die je uitnodigt om mee te gaan op diens fijngevoelige reis van vervagende werkelijkheid en verbeelding. Experimentele geluidskunst met een mix van etherische zang en synthetische texturen verkennen kwetsbaarheid door te raken aan thema’s uit de kindertijd, het sublieme, trauma en veerkracht. Live visuals worden verzorgd door Nongalant.

Cymbaline is een duo uit Utrecht dat muziek maakt met analoge synthesizers, oude krakende drumcomputers en lo-fi vocalen. Met een voorliefde voor de underground uit de jaren ’70 weten ze een geluid neer te zetten dat doet denken aan Britse new wave en Duitse krautrock. Kortom: duister en recalcitrant, maar vooral ook melancholisch.

Je wil deze extravaganza niet missen, dus zet de UP van 23 mei extra groot in je agenda dit keer!

Simplon UP zoekt versterking! 📢

We zijn op zoek naar nieuwe tekstschrijvers en een nieuwe marketeer! Voor een vaste lage ticketprijs zie je iedere donderdagavond bij UP toffe nieuwe acts uit Groningen, aangevuld met opkomende artiesten van ver daarbuiten. We zoeken naar mensen die zich sowieso voor een jaar willen inzetten en de ambitie hebben om hier in de toekomst hun beroep van te maken. Deze vacatures zijn op vrijwillige basis. Interesse? are back! After 6 years of absence, the Nijmegen garage rock band unexpectedly resurrected in early 2022. The band started the new year with their third EP 'The Shepherd & the Scapegoat'. Not as a superficial New Year’s resolution, but more out of bitter necessity. The EP diverts from the straightforward staccato approach that is traditional to The Super Soakers. Melancholia, ballads and gloom are explored while sung together via engaged lyrics about rotting secrets, obvious populist rhetoric and the death of nuance.

Statera is alternative rock with a punk attitude. Singer and guitarist Alexander Banic writes about the agony and pleasure of what everyone faces in life: Existence. The music tells stories of love, pain and uncertainty through a cheerful yet gloomy sound. This is supported by the bass sound and backing vocals of bassist Max van der Kleij. Drummer Gijs van der Stelt completes the gang into one: Statera. Formed at the end of 2022, the band is now ready to bring its ripping sound to the world through its first single 'Vague' in 2023.

is an energetic garage rock band from Groningen, with influences ranging from Led Zeppelin to Soundgarden. Dan and the Middle Men started as Daniel Devoy’s solo project in Dublin. During the Covid pandemic, Dan found ‘his middle men’ in Groningen and the four-piece band was formed.

is a trio from Amsterdam that makes alternative rock with small noise, rave and pop influences. Armed with a lot of samplers, loopers, and other obscure effects pedals, their music is all over the place on stage. There is a lot of improvisation, so every live show is different! Sometimes it sounds like a runaway Atari computer with bouncing electronics and robot bleeps, sometimes like a fairground ride with QOTSA-like tempo changes.

The DJ of the evening is DJ Wijtske.

The young band .us.bliss brings an amazing amount of energy. The band’s grunge sound is especially reminiscent of bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters. Through various pop trajectories such as Drentsch Peil XL, Kunstbende and Popsport, the band made it to the finals of the Young Creators Festival in Amsterdam.

is a no-nonsense rock band. This is mainly due to their tight sound with memorable riffs. The band is reminiscent of Foo Fighters and Velvet Revolver, and mainly encourages the audience to start headbanging and screaming along. What is particularly striking about the band is that the drummer has taken on lead vocals, which ensures an original stage presentation.

NEXT UP:
Between Plateaus is a group of four from Groningen who have come together to create a unique blend of pop, rock, electronic, and garage music. Powerful vocals, flashy guitar leads, laid-back chill beats, and electronic and garage-influenced rhythms fuel their songs and performances.

Onaf is a 28-year-old spoken-word pop artist from Groningen. Onaf wrote poems, but ‘who reads poems?’ So he wrote a debut album of Dutch music poems that he named Bundel and released it in May 2022. Melancholy yet driven, or as his students say: Weird. Songs about love, no love, s*x, men, women, trains and crying: “as long as possible, and then a few tears like a little burp.”

Fix Everything is boundless hope despite overwhelming dread. They play contorted post-punk music laced with unruly psychedelia, sludge, and hardcore. On their debut album HELLEND VLAK, the Amsterdam-based trio hurtle through transitions and themes, shuffling confidence and despair along with musical genres in their deck of tracks.

Three years ago, The Next Call was founded. The post-punk band from Groningen give energetic performances in which the sound is reminiscent of bands like The Cure, Iggy Pop & The Stooges, The Gun Club, IDLES and The Dead Kennedys.

NEXT UP:
is a multi-instrumentalist and daydreamer from Leeuwarden, who released his debut album I Don’t Like Any of You last summer. Kidd Nebula wrote, recorded and pressed this psychedelic indie-funk album all by himself. The 80’s synths, funky basslines, clean beats and storytelling lyrics are reminiscent of Funkadelic, Mac Miller and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

The second multi-instrumentalist of the night is .freek from Amsterdam. Through analog synthesizers, drumcomputers and samplers with live drums, guitar and bass guitar, Freek Mulder creates a dynamic fusion of 80’s jazz fusion, modern hip-hop and indie R&B.

Susurrous is the solo project of Lennard Vaarten, an independent singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer from Tilburg. From his student room he single-handedly records songs in just about every style you could think of. His music mostly fits into the somewhat oxymoronic label of alternative pop, with influences ranging from Beach Boys-esque psychedelia to funky house music à la Daft Punk – and everything in between.

Ralph Louis lyrics take a central role in his songwriting, offering a multi-layered view at the human experience with strong and memorable melodies. With folk (rock) as his musical and inspiration for lyrics and musical structure from a wide selection of genres, Ralph Louie will present a fresh interpretation of the traditional folk sound.

Schau Schau makes post-punk and new wave which fits in the 80s style of bands like Talking Heads or the Parquet Courts. This can be heard in their single ‘Thermodynamics’, a post-punk song that builds up to a wild droney climax.

Plain Bizarre describes itself as a drive-y, laidback and straightforward garage rock with slacker and punk influences carried over with a hint of discomfort. That’s a mouth full, but we are sure they are just going to rock!

INÉS consists of singer and writer Inès Morassutti-Vitale and producer, composer and mixing engineer Wilko Schmidt-Dannert. The combination of lo-fi drum machines, a dreamy sound and the bedroom singer-songwriter style creates a beautiful Indie pop sound.

Quincy & the David is a brand new DIY-band based in Zwolle. For lovers of (post)punk, songs no longer than 3 minutes, cute people, moshpits and screaming in a loving way.

Jan Modaal writes punk schlager songs. Jan’s lyrics express a great love for the Dutch language. The songs are somewhere between a cheerful accusation and a furious declaration of love.

Next UP, two special acts will perform!
Ill$4b3rr is an internet artist from Groningen who produces electronic music and is mainly active in the glitchcore scene on Soundcloud. His music can be described as a combination of nightcore, trap, euro and EDM, making extensive use of vocals without lyrics. As a result, the focus is on melodies. Through this universal language, the music appeals to an international audience, in which individual interpretation plays a major role.

Danië$$ Armstron$$ makes melodical rap, rapping in both English and Dutch. He started releasing music on Soundcloud, and when one of his tracks reached 1000 streams, he started releasing his music on platforms like Youtube and Spotify.

Rantsoen, four gentlemen from the far north with analog chorus pedals who breathe new life into the 80s sound. They are ready to blow Groningen away with their original alternative rock songs!

Langkamer, coming all the way from Bristol to give us slacker rock and old Americana, but here and there it even leans a bit towards Indie Rock. A super fresh sound if you ask us! What can you expect live? Incredibly catchy songs that might cause a little moshpit here and there.
