Nina wood returns to Simplon UP to celebrate the release of her new EP! This quirky musician explores the limits of Dutch pop music and offers a unique experience. Nina Wood is not just a musician, she is a storyteller that comforts and offers consolation that nothing in life happens at random. Her idiosyncratic mix of sounds and texts make a lasting impression in the hearts of listeners. With her honest and authentic approach to music, Nina Wood is an act to remember

MARIT NYGÅRD (.nygard):

She will be joined by Marit Nygård. Expect happy, angry, sad or hopeful, but mainly honest songs. She’s looking for a connection, for cheap supermarket wine, for an existence as a one-man orchestra; the one that listens closely gets an insight in the life of a student that struggles through coming of age, love and a changing world. She is part of the talent track Hit the North 2023 and already plays various stages in the north of the Netherlands.

This UP, two talented singer-songwriters will take the stage!

YUMEI (.mei.b):

Having sung her whole life, Yumei only discovered her love for writing in 2022. Not long after, she set out to collaborate with producer Rutger Bandell and release her debut EP ‘Thoughts of Mine’. Being intrigued by complex emotions and abstract experiences, Yumei explores the ways in which our thoughts can hold us back, but can also function as a tool to unveil our inner workings. The project doesn’t shy away from putting her darkness on display and highlights the beauty of transformation and growth. Blending the sounds of neo-soul, jazz, and r&b, and captivating listeners with her warm voice, Yumei hopes to encourage people to be introspective and garner a deeper understanding of oneself.

After having dipped her toes in the waters of live performing, she is eager to tread new stages going forward. While still in the process of self-discovery, both personally and artistically, Yumei invites the audience of Simplon UP on the 30th of January to embark on this exciting journey together.

NIENKE WITKAMP ():

Nienke Witkamp loves doing puzzles - and you can hear it in her music. She gathers her thoughts, emotions, stories, experiences and ideas and fits those pieces together into layered songs. The result is warm soul-pop with layered lyrics, where poetry and sudden clarity alternate seamlessly. In February 2024, Nienke released the single ‘Licht weer Aan’ together with Kaièt, followed by her debut EP and first solo project ‘Dear Self,’ in October of the same year. In late May 2025, she will graduate from the Prince Claus Conservatoire in Groningen.

For Nienke, songwriting is her way of giving every piece a place, and now it’s time to share her passion with an audience. From the studio, out of her head—onto the stage. With honesty, melody, warmth and soul, she tells her stories, leaving listeners reflective and intrigued.

Alongside the acts, DJ .online will glue the evening together at the Simplon café.

Dutch traditions are here to be changed! The 5th of December we welcome the CLUP van Sinterklaas, Simplon edition. Instead of celebrating the Sinterklaas holiday at home like we’re used to, this time you can enjoy pepernoten, good music and 3 dj’s for 3 euros at the Simplon café.

TAXITAXI (DJ-Set) ():

Three maniacs behind the wheel of a rusty cab with no brakes—that’s how punk boy band TAXITAXI usually rolls. But if a turntable is involved, it’s a completely different story. During their DJ set, the world’s best band will transform into a luxurious trike that only delivers certified bangers. Only the best hits from the 90s to present day are allowed, no exceptions—no one will be left behind.

DJ SBB:

DJ SBB plays music determined by fixed patterns as well as less conventional electronic music. When he’s spinning songs, you can expect skewed house, decent breaks and perhaps some faster tunes.

BASS by Banić ():

Inspired by heavy electronic beats and an ironic outlook on life, producer and DJ Alexander Banic brings serious energy to the dance floor. His Drum ‘n Bass productions feature intense neuro synths, sarcastic vocals, and plenty of surprises. His biggest inspirations are A.M.C. and Current Value. BASS By Banić means banging beats, laughter, and love. For this CLUP night, BASS By Banić will kick off the night with a future house/bass house set to warm up the crowd.

This might just be the best present you will ever get! Come together and dance to the music played by DJ SBB, Bass by Banić and TAXITAXI. See you there!

FAHRENHEIT 251 (.251):

Fahrenheit 251 is a multi-format band led by drummer/composer Bruno Timarchi. Its name comes from a mix of Ray Bradbury’s novel “Fahrenheit 451” -where there’s a constant book burning to prevent people from being educated- and one of jazz’s most typical harmonic progressions, the almighty II-V-I. This combination expresses the ambivalence of destroying or decomposing something to make it yours and, in doing so, giving old concepts a fresh perspective.

Fahrenheit 251 is fueled by curiosity, observation of life and human behavior, and a playful attitude. “Scream! Dance Rejoice” is the band’s first album, due to be released on December 1st, 2024. The band delivers “Flammable jazz for your sexy veins”—if that doesn’t convince you to catch their performance at Simplon UP, nothing will!

JENESON/MARKUNAITE QUARTET:

The Jeneson/Markunaite Quartet was born from the collaboration between Dutch jazz saxophonist Jan Jeneson and Lithuanian pianist/keyboardist Lija Markunaite. Both musicians study jazz at the Prins Claus Conservatorium, but are also inspired by a wide range of musical styles beyond traditional jazz. With their quartet, consisting of Jan Jeneson (tenor saxophone), Lija Markunaite (keys), Stilyan Radev (bass), and Reinis Baltins (drums), they bring together all these influences into a dynamic fusion, with jazz as the guiding thread.

Expect a set of groovy jazz music infused with influences from hip-hop, house, dub, funk, fusion, and much more. The band plays only original compositions, much of which are driven by live improvisation. This ensures that every performance is a unique musical experience that can take any direction. You can dance, hip-hop heads will start to bob, but sometimes the music unexpectedly shifts into something small and intimate.

Alongside the acts, .online will tie this evening together with some lovely tunes.

RADIANT SCULPTURES ():

Radiant Sculptures is an alternative rock band from Emmen, featuring Angelo (bassist), Jordi (drummer), Nick (guitarist), and Zoey (singer). The band was formed in 2022 in order to prepare for a jam session at a music festival named “Reconnect” in Groningen. After their first performance,the members unanimously decided to continue working together.

Their music blends indie, shoegaze, postpunk, garage rock, dream pop, and more. Their sound ranges from harsh, dark, and noisy tones reminiscent of Courtney Love to dreamy, mesmerizing chords with a talk-singing style inspired by Mazzy Star, Sonic Youth, and Pixies. Looking ahead, Radiant Sculptures plans to release a single in 2025 as part of their upcoming album.

PROM VAGABONDS ():

Prom Vagabonds are a four-piece Postpunk band and the authors of a universe of visual sonic stories, told through the music they make, the themed costumes they wear and the performances they deliver. They invite you to enter their theatrical world to connect with the raw, vulnerable and nostalgic stories they tell.

Entrancing, as through casting a spell, Prom Vagabonds takes the audience onto an unpredictable yet cohesive journey. The experience may contain intense sounds of doom, a careful balance of rage and humor, or hypnotic and emotional ballads.

With every performance, they create a unique cathartic chaos that allows all emotions to wax and wane freely. But this chaos is never random, each story is part of their ever-expanding universe. Prom Vagabonds invites all to join their journey.

Alongside the acts, DJ Ad-dy will sew the night together with some lovely records.

GEESTDRIFT (.music):

Geestdrift: A feeling of joyful and emotional engagement. Geestdrift has had a fiery start, already playing at the Melkweg (Amsterdam) and taking home the first prize at the Kunstbende 2024 competition. This four-member band makes Dutch alternative music with a hint of punk. This past summer, they toured festivals such as Hongerige Wolf and Noorderzon, and now they’ve landed here with us in the upstairs hall of UP. Get ready for an evening of pure and raw energy.

“Her dreamy guitars slice through your reality with enigmatic drums and a driving bass, while her lyrics bombard you with countless questions, just before leaving you with only a handful of potential answers.”

MIEZER (.band):

Miezer is a q***r indie rock trio from Groningen. They take you on an introspective journey through the shadowy corners but also the more exciting moments of life. Their Dutch lyrics explore themes such as love, loss, and longing. After previously conquering the VERA downstage, Miezer now visits UP, inviting everyone to join them on their journey.

HIDDEN GIANTS ():

Hidden Giants is an experienced DIY indie pop band from Groningen. They first started as a duo in a home studio, and have grown into an active, full band. In their songs - by the way, self-written and self-produced! - you can hear the inspiration of musical geniuses like Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, Snow Patrol and Saybia. The musicians from Hidden Giants have been working on the release of their first full band DIY album, “We Are The Ocean,” with successful national and international releases of the singles “Silent Waters,” “Call It A Day” and “Brand New”. The title is based on the quote by writer Ryunosuke Satoro: ‘Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean.’ ‘We Are The Ocean’ refers to the band: stronger together than alone. But in the songs, they address that theme more broadly, focusing on society and the world. ‘Have faith in each other, respect other people’s opinions or peculiarities, have an eye for the beautiful little things and don’t give up when things get tough. Together we can make something beautiful out of life,’ Hidden Giants said. The album will be available to listen to via all streaming services starting in late October.

MOMSNAME ():

Serene singing supplemented with a dreamy and melancholic sound with a psychedelic edge. They take you along to a soft, healing, but also sad place. MOMSNAME isn’t afraid to talk about vulnerability, because to heal you first need to acknowledge the dark parts of your self.

JADI D ():

In Jadi D’s music, her femininity is a core element. With her enchanting voice and disarming character, the Dutch-Moroccan singer quickly wins you over. Her sound is a mix of alternative R&B with an eccentric twist, taking you on her healing journey. She aims to show that you can be powerful even when you allow yourself to be vulnerable.

In 2021, she was the most booked Hip-hop/R&B artist during the Popronde, after which she performed at events like the Bevrijdingsfestival and ESNS24 in her hometown Groningen. About her show at Simplon, 3voor12 Groningen wrote: “Jadi embodies, both in her music and in her presence on stage, the current zeitgeist that prioritizes self-acceptance, self-love, and inclusivity for all genders and bodies. But it’s not just this message that makes the show good; her voice is also incredibly strong.” With her new live show and band, Jadi D is ready to share her sound and message with everyone.

LAURIE ANN (.ann.music):

Laurie Ann is a 23-year-old musician from Groningen. In her music, influenced by artists like KALEO and Aurora, she explores themes such as accepting the darker sides of life and regaining self-confidence.

An energetic set that gets the crowd moving—that’s what you can expect from Bigbeefsauce, Exmore, and Laurie Ann when they hit the stage. The three young musicians, hailing from Friesland and Groningen, bring a unique mix of styles. Rapper Bigbeefsauce sets the tone with his Dutch/hip-hop style, while Laurie Ann’s hypnotic melodies and infectious dreampop hooks make each track unforgettable. Exmore, behind the turntables, adds an irresistible vibe with live instruments and danceable music. This year, they performed at EM2, Kleine Prijs, HarFest, and Noorderzon. It all looks effortless on stage. With dance and constant interaction, the audience feels truly engaged. Their tracks explore embracing the darker sides of life, love, and looking ahead. BOFFUH:

BOFFUH is a collective that creatively blends different styles, including HipHop, dance-house and everything in between. The 22-year-old boys from Groningen initially came together after school to have fun and experiment with making music. Out of this shared passion for music, BOFFUH was born, featuring Jibbe Laansma (JLproductions), Ties van der Bles (Bles), Lennart van der Wal (Leendert) and Jelmer Heeringa (Zalmpie). Each member brings something unique to the table: Jibbe, with his wide arsenal of music types, Bles, who is not afraid to play with words, Leendert, who shares his turbulent life through his lyrics, and Zalmpie, whos uptempo house was key to BOFFUH’s hit track: Racefiets. BOFFUH has earned a spot in studentbangers playlists, has performed at lustrum parties at student associations, and you’ll see them many more times. Even better, they are coming to Simplon UP! Bring your friends and come dance to songs like ‘Riet Er In’ and ‘Wat Is Wat’!

POELIER EN KUÒ:

Poelier and KUÒ contribute significantly to the scene with their lyrical highs, rawness and personal stories. When the beat drops in songs like ‘Lastig Hè,’ ‘Willem IV’ or ‘Alles Is Genoeg’, you inevitably go dancing. These gentlemen have dropped two albums in one year: in 2023 they released the album Noorderlicht, followed by NU/NOOIT. Their quality hip-hop, influenced by different styles such as opera, soul and jazz is fully expressed on these albums. Enjoy the gripping lyrics and beats that Poelier and KUÒ perform live to the audience at Simplon UP!

HAITZE ():

When HAITZE first touched an electric guitar, he was instantly transported to another world. A place where introverts take the spotlight, and everyone is equal. However, the stigma around “masculinity” troubles him. No matter how you identify, we all possess both masculine and feminine energies, complementing and strengthening each other. Yet many men hide their feminine side, fearing it will be seen as “weak.” HAITZE wants to remind you that it’s okay to be afraid.

Let yourself be carried away into this world by the sounds of fresh Dutch Indie Pop.

LauLau ():

LauLau blends intense euphoria with pounding danceability into monster hits that drown in a sea of synthesizers. He sings with deadly seriousness about being addicted to YouTube, cat videos, and fitness blogs, about friends who don’t call back, about trying to escape his problems in a forest, and about wanting to dance just a little bit longer.

LauLau wants you to believe in yourself, find your strength, and have an outlet. LauLau is a one-man wall of sound, mixing electroclash, synthpop, hip hop, and dance, on top of which you’ll be standing as you lose yourself on this night at Simplon UP.

+ Kilo +++ + DJ Pocketbread.

Hello dear friends, hope you all had a nice summer. We’re kicking things off at UP again this thursday! And we have some great acts lined up.

Taupe

Taupe are a British non-jazz trio, believing that taking risks only works if you’re willing to fail, and the band shares an understanding that there’s no wrong way to play. A decade of friendship has conjured a spooky telekinesis that anchors the band, even when their improvisations teeter on the edge of total collapse. The three-piece are an explosive live band, veering from taut metronomic precision into intentionally turbulent, unchartered territory. A DIY ethos feeds their wonky compositions, colliding sour scatter-skronk with sludgy, doom-inspired riffs, as showcased in their anarchic debut album, Fill Up Your Lungs and Bellow (2017). Their latest album Not Blue Light (2020) is Taupe’s boldest record yet, inspired by the night when their car was almost stolen. Their exhilarating sense of discovery has earned them support from the likes of BBC 6 Music’s Freak Zone and BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction and Freeness, as well as support slots with acts such as Deerhoof, Richard Dawson & Circle and Melt Banana. Fizzing with ideas, Taupe are a non-jazz band that prizes surprise over any specific sound.

Kilo +++

Kilo+++ is a DIY and avant-garde electropunk two-piece from Groningen. Delightfully camp, Kilo+++ demonstrates urgency through electronics, bordering on eggpunk with
analog synthesizer and drum machine sounds, super special samples, and signal-splitted guitar. Kilo+++ is the newest conceptual utterance from The Hands Off Project, which is an independent punk organization founded by members Tim Daniël Stienstra and Janneke de Boer. The Hands Off Project (T.H.O.P) has played the music of Kilo+++ at T.H.O.P. 06 in Vera before, but now it’s time to take the stage of Simplon UP!

DJ Pocketbread will also be in the house to provide you with some lovely tunes during the evening.

Op zoek naar een podium?

Simplon UP biedt de mogelijkheid voor beginnende artiesten om stappen op de ladder van de muzikale sector te zetten. Elke donderdagavond zullen twee artiesten/bands en een DJ een avondvullend programma neerzetten in onze knusse bovenzaal. Het is de perfecte manier als artiest om jouw muziek en vaardigheden op het podium over te brengen. Daarnaast is het ook een prachtige kans om nieuwe muziek te ontdekken.

Afgelopen seizoen was een groot succes, waarin we een zeer gevarieerd en talentvol programma hebben aangeboden. Dit proeft naar meer, dus gaan we er komend seizoen alles op zetten om die overtreffende trap te behalen.

Deze editie van UP wordt buitengewoon, wonderbaarlijk en extra speciaal.

De vloer van het Simplon UP podium leent zich niet alleen voor muziek dit keer, maar ook voor een korte theaterperformance van de Card Bored Kids: twee kinderen, één fort en lawaaierige attributen. Ook in het café is deze avond niet alleen een dj aanwezig maar ook een kunstexpositie en -markt van verschillende studenten van Minerva.

Qua muziek zal huny langskomen, ook bekend als Luz Mercedes, die je uitnodigt om mee te gaan op diens fijngevoelige reis van vervagende werkelijkheid en verbeelding. Experimentele geluidskunst met een mix van etherische zang en synthetische texturen verkennen kwetsbaarheid door te raken aan thema’s uit de kindertijd, het sublieme, trauma en veerkracht. Live visuals worden verzorgd door Nongalant.

Cymbaline is een duo uit Utrecht dat muziek maakt met analoge synthesizers, oude krakende drumcomputers en lo-fi vocalen. Met een voorliefde voor de underground uit de jaren ’70 weten ze een geluid neer te zetten dat doet denken aan Britse new wave en Duitse krautrock. Kortom: duister en recalcitrant, maar vooral ook melancholisch.

Je wil deze extravaganza niet missen, dus zet de UP van 23 mei extra groot in je agenda dit keer!

❗️CONFIRMED 27/2/‘25: DAN AND THE MIDDLE MEN (@danandthemiddlemen): Dan and the Middle Men is a punchy Alt-Rockband from the north of the Netherlands with various influences from Rage Against the Machine to Royal Blood, born from a solo project from Irish frontman Daniel Devoy who moved to the Netherlands in 2020. Heavy grooves and energetic fuzzy riffs are what they’re all about. A strong combination, as they’ve won multiple band contests with their kinetic live sets which will have you both dancing and banging your heads! HELEN JEWETT (@helenjewettband): Helen Jewett came together thanks to an impromptu school workshop involving a bucket of name tags. After a few rehearsals and some pub chats about the complexities of existence, the band began to dream and work toward a position they never dared to imagine for themselves. With a shared love for bands like Joy Division, Radiohead, and My Bloody Valentine, they started crafting songs that merged the genres they were most passionate about: Post-Punk and Shoegaze, with touches of Folk, Electronica, Hardcore, and Ambient. Their poetic lyrics, reflecting on existentialism, nostalgia, and the turbulence of modern life add a profound and evocative layer to their music, inviting listeners into an icy and introspective soundscape. ❗️CONFIRMED 20/2/‘25: KIDD NEBULA (@kiddnebula): Jazz, funk and Hip-Hop melt together in the work of Leeuwarder Kidd Nebula. His lyrics are funny and relatable. His melodies range from uptempo and danceable to chill. On February 20th, he will join us at Simplon UP with his new live band: Kidd Nebula & The Voodoo Funk Conspiracy, adding an extra jazzy sauce to his indie-funk music during the MENTAL CHILLNESS Try-Out Tour. MOSSI & SB (@mossi.music, @prod.sb_97): Oldschool boombap with a modern twist. These Groninger rapper and producer released their long-awaited EP Scheve Blikken last year, where they mix vintage samples with contemporary influences to create an amazing, fresh sound. Two years ago Jun and Koko made a new start in the Netherlands and in the meantime they have already performed at several festivals such as Schippop, Booch? and St. Rosa. In addition, ENJAKU YOYO has performed twenty two times at different venues throughout the Netherlands in the selection of the Popronde. Get swept up in their dynamic mix of percussive Tap Guitar, dark techno and intense riffs at Simplon UP! An unforgettable experience where you will be forced to dance along. YUSUF KEMAL ÖZTÜRK @yusuf.kemal.ozturk: Based in the Netherlands with deep Turkish roots, Yusuf Kemal Öztürk is a multi-instrumentalist who crafts immersive, cinematic soundscapes that blend post-rock, alt-rock, ambient, and prog-rock. Influenced by artists like Radiohead, Silver Mt. Zion, Aphex Twin, and Porcupine Tree, alongside the rich musical traditions of his heritage, his music carries the emotional depth and narrative quality of a soundtrack. Classically trained in piano from the age of 13, Yusuf Kemal quickly expanded his skills to include guitar, bass, and drums by 16. After facing challenging circumstances that led him to relocate to the Netherlands in 2019, he found a deep need to tell his story through music—a universal language that transcends cultural and linguistic barriers. Yusuf Kemal’s music is more than just something to listen to; it’s an evocative experience designed to evoke empathy, bridge cultures, and invite listeners into the emotions and stories that have shaped his life. ❗️CONFIRMED 30/1/‘25: This UP, two talented singer-songwriters will take the stage! YUMEI (@yu.mei.b): Having sung her whole life, Yumei only discovered her love for writing in 2022. Not long after, she set out to collaborate with producer Rutger Bandell and release her debut EP ‘Thoughts of Mine’. Being intrigued by complex emotions and abstract experiences, Yumei explores the ways in which our thoughts can hold us back, but can also function as a tool to unveil our inner workings. The project doesn’t shy away from putting her darkness on display and highlights the beauty of transformation and growth. Blending the sounds of neo-soul, jazz, and r&b, and captivating listeners with her warm voice, Yumei hopes to encourage people to be introspective and garner a deeper understanding of oneself. After having dipped her toes in the waters of live performing, she is eager to tread new stages going forward. While still in the process of self-discovery, both personally and artistically, Yumei invites the audience of Simplon UP on the 30th of January to embark on this exciting journey together. NIENKE WITKAMP (@nienkewitkamp): Nienke Witkamp loves doing puzzles - and you can hear it in her music. She gathers her thoughts, emotions, stories, experiences and ideas and fits those pieces together into layered songs. The result is warm soul-pop with layered lyrics, where poetry and sudden clarity alternate seamlessly. In February 2024, Nienke released the single ‘Licht weer Aan’ together with Kaièt, followed by her debut EP and first solo project ‘Dear Self,’ in October of the same year. In late May 2025, she will graduate from the Prince Claus Conservatoire in Groningen. For Nienke, songwriting is her way of giving every piece a place, and now it’s time to share her passion with an audience. From the studio, out of her head—onto the stage. With honesty, melody, warmth and soul, she tells her stories, leaving listeners reflective and intrigued.

❗️CONFIRMED 6-2-‘25: NINA WOOD (@ninainthewood): Nina wood returns to Simplon UP to celebrate the release of her new EP! This quirky musician explores the limits of Dutch pop music and offers a unique experience. Nina Wood is not just a musician, she is a storyteller that comforts and offers consolation that nothing in life happens at random. Her idiosyncratic mix of sounds and texts make a lasting impression in the hearts of listeners. With her honest and authentic approach to music, Nina Wood is an act to remember MARIT NYGÅRD (@marit.nygard): She will be joined by Marit Nygård. Expect happy, angry, sad or hopeful, but mainly honest songs. She’s looking for a connection, for cheap supermarket wine, for an existence as a one-man orchestra; the one that listens closely gets an insight in the life of a student that struggles through coming of age, love and a changing world. ❗️CONFIRMED 9/1/‘25: Get ready for the first UP of 2025! 🎶 LILLA MY (@lillamymusic): Lilla My, named after a character from The Moomins, writes songs about subjects like queer love, mental health, grief and recovery. The music is inspired by artists like girl in red and Clairo, but you can also hear influences of different genres like riot grrrl and shoegaze. Recently she released her debut EP, and after a successful solo performance at UP last year Lilly My will return to Simplon, this time with a band! IN GOOD SPIRIT (@ingoodspirit_): Also performing will be the band In Good Spirit, an indie folk group that formed not too long ago in Groningen. Their music reminds us of acts like Bon Iver, The Beatles and Karen O. From sunny rays and autumn days, their music is moments, marinated for your ears.
