When I came to work and live in east Auckland 20 years ago, the first person I interviewed for The Times Interview, a question-and-answer feature I introduced during my first 10-year stint at Times Media, was Morrin Cooper, the last Mayor of Howick. He was in office for 15 years – five terms from 1974 to 1989 – and as I always like to say, he retired undefeated. It’s an honour to count him as a mate. Morrin is also one of the finest orators and storytellers I know – and I’ve met a few down the years. It’s a pleasure to publish this Q&A with MT, and because he’s nearing his 90th birthday, I thought it was an idea to let everyone know so you can all wish him happy birthday in the lead-up to the big day on December 2. Respect to you, Morrin T. Cooper. You’re a good bloke. – PJ Taylor (this is the extended version)
