Join Candice and unlock the heartbeat of Middle Eastern dance in our immersive course designed for dancers of all levels who wish to deepen their understanding of the intricate rhythms of this ancient art form.
In this Introductory course, you'll embark on an exploration of traditional Middle Eastern rhythms and their role in traditional, folkloric and modern Egyptian dance. Candice will take you through engaging combos and rhythm exercises, and you'll learn to identify, count, and interpret these essential beats, from the classic "Maqsoum" and "Saidi" to the vibrant “Baladi”. We will cover 6 of the fundamental rhythms that every belly dancer must know!
This workshop is perfect for belly dancers at any stage of their journey—whether you're just starting out or looking to refine your skills. Combos will have variations for Beginner to Advanced students. Musicians interested in understanding the intricate relationship between rhythm and movement are also welcome.

Dances from southern Egypt have had a significant presence in the stage dances of Egypt, and a considerable influence on Raqs Sharqi/orientale dance. This series will explore key elements and nuances that originate from the music and dances of the Sa’idi, through video, lecture, and lots of opportunities to practice the movement. From week #2, bring a stick (assaya) or cane if you have one (any questions about the stick/cane can be answered via email or during week #1).
Open to anyone who has taken at least 4 weeks of belly dance before or anyone who has done a little bit of dance in another genre.

We will learn techniques on how to express lyrical meaning using gestures with our hands, face, and body in Shaabi. During the workshop, Fernanda will teach us a choreo with the song 3am Al Magal, Mahmoud El Lithy’s latest release.
❤️ 2PM-4PM: COMBOS WORKSHOP
We will explore ways of mixing steps and transitions to create beautiful combinations to use in any dance. Fernanda will work with lots of different music styles in the same workshop and will help students polish their technique. By navigating through so many styles in one class, students will learn about the diversity of Egyptian dance, and what makes it so very dynamic and alive!

We've been running our Origins & Connections Series for quite a while now, and we're so proud that for our Student Show, our Saidi students delivered a captivating performance that truly embodied the essence of this traditional dance form.
Their energy, precision, and understanding of the Saidi style brought the stage to life and left the audience mesmerized. 🌟 It's been a joy to watch these students connect with the rich cultural heritage of Saidi dance, and their hard work and dedication were evident in every step.
We're thrilled to see how far they've come and we're looking forward to more performance with our Saidi ladies! We are so grateful to Setsuna for sharing her knowledge with our students and guiding them in this journey.

The North Shore Women's Centre is facing closure due to funding being cut by the current government's Oranga Tamariki! We have been fundraising for this centre and the important social work they do for vulnerable women and children for over a decade.
I have no words but tears of anguish and injustice for them.
Oranga Tamariki has ended its contracts with 190 social service providers, saying they are under-performing.

Vicky has been dancing since she was 6 years old, and joined Phoenix in 2022. She has been a valuable class contributor and loves to perform 😍 Do not let her sweet smile fool you because she's one talented and hard-working dancer at such a young age! Her growth every term has been nothing short of remarkable. From mastering intricate choreographies to bringing her amazing expression to each performance, Vicky's dedication and passion shine through in every move she makes. 🌟 We are incredibly proud to have her as part of our dance family and can't wait to see what she will learn in the coming year.

David has worked as a director, producer, musician, actor and designer on over 160 theatre productions throughout Aotearoa and Australia. He is a renowned Shakespeare scholar, a Hunter Fellow of Victoria University and the Artistic Director of Pop-up Globe. His family are originally from Bcharre in Lebanon. David will be playing oud and possibly some other instruments.

Transforming challenge into a Superpower. Molly uses dance to express herself, it is an integral part of Molly's life, filling her with much joy which she loves to share. Belly dance costume recommendations part 2. 🥰 Yesterday, I've mentioned that one of my recommended designers is Tatiana from Crystaliana Creations. It makes me smile, and it makes other people smile when they see this costume! 🤣 I used it when I was 8 months pregnant with Stella and it fits me when I'm not pregnant, so it's very versatile 😝 It's just amazing! Unfortunately, Alina doesn't make costumes anymore (sad I know!) BUT she makes belly dance jewellery and accessories! So if you want to check her creations out, they're really gorgeous! We've received some messages and comments if we allow pregnant students to take belly dance classes...Our answer is YES, of course! As long as your doctor says it is okay, and you listen to your body, pregnancy and belly dance go together like peanut butter and jam! 🥰 Belly dance can be very good for softly releasing pelvis tension, accessing the pelvic floor (super important pre and post partum), and having a great endorphin releasing exercise that’s good for Mummas and Bubbas. 👶🏻🤰🏻

Candice Frankland is the Founder and Director of the multi-award-winning Phoenix Belly Dance. Candice aims to show her students that belly dance has benefits for everyone, both psychological and physical. Many of her students have found belly dancing to be a catalyst for their personal growth, and becoming part of a caring community.
Some of the highlights of her career have been presenting performances and workshops internationally in Turkey, Fiji, Australia, South Africa, and Samoa, as well as featuring in Jillina’s Belly Dance Evolution and BellyQueen’s Silk Road Shows. She has also led her troupe to win the Jambalaya multi-discipline dance competition, the Viva Eclektika Asia Vision Cup, and the NZ Corporate Event’s Best Entertainment Company Award.

Along with all of these wonderful experiences, it is Candice’s background as a Business Analyst that has helped her create a strong foundation for managing the every day workings of one of the largest Belly Dance Companies in NZ, and as a result she tutors and mentors other dancers who are building their businesses. Her long term goals are to uplift, support, and educate the belly dance community, share this art form with the public, and produce both modern concepts while preserving the integrity and of the cultural roots of the dance.
