You, Me, Everybody
One of the amazing performances from You, Me, Everybody tonight at Kumeu Live.
An intimate soulful performer, an acoustic guitar sensation, winner of three New Zealand Music Awards Paul Ubana Jones was born in London to a Yorkshire mother and a Nigerian father.
Paul was playing the guitar by the age of eleven. Four decades as a professional decades and nine albums later he continues to perform throughout New Zealand, Australia Europe and the USA.
Paul has shared the stage and toured with the best: BB King, Bob Dylan, Taj Mahal, Keb Mo, Crowded House, Tuck and Patti… He has delighted festival audiences at the Dublin Blues Festival, Byron bay Blues festival, Vancouver Island Folk Festival, Blues at Bridgetown and many others in Europe.
“A national treasure; Paul Ubana Jones is so much more than one man with a guitar. He is a conjuror of unique and original songs, rooted in primal Blues and Soul”

Love Square are performing their first show at Kumeu Live. This three-piece will happily be hustled and shooed into Kumeu Arts' work room. Get close up to the sonic presence that is Love Square! You can feel the metallic swish and clunk of Finn Scholes' trumpet valves as he readies his fingers for a dazzling cadenza. The clicks and pops from Nick Atkinson's saxophone keys add a percussive layer that you can only sense in such an intimate room. Alistair Deverick has his right heel off the ground, his toes poised on the edge of his bass-drum pedal. Cymbals shimmer and wash before he detonates a booming note from his kick.
The rhythms are exotic, reeled in on fine lines from the Bolivian highlands and the head-waters of the Blue Nile in Ethiopia. Skanks from the Caribbean swim upstream past the jazz of New Orleans toward the soul of the great lakes. The regime of hand percussion alone reads like pirates shopping list. A guiro, three tambourines, four maraca, five golden rings, a silver triangle, Christmas bells, woodblocks, a single silver triangle and lastly shakers... two hands full! There may also be three members of the saxophone family involved and you never know how many Scholes' will turn up.
Doors open at 7.30pm. Show is from 8.00-9.45ish. BYO, Tickets on UTR and at the door, ample parking next to venue.

Basement Spaceman (aka Andy Brown) splashes down on Saturday 17th October at 8pm. BYO, Paywave. https://www.undertheradar.co.nz/gig/91471/Basement-Spaceman.utr
Basement Spaceman: presents ‘Voyager And The Golden Record’, an engaging, highly visual, psychedelic show.
In 1977, two Voyager probes set off to explore the solar system and beyond, each carrying a coded message for extraterrestrial life on a unique Golden Record.
Following on from the critically acclaimed ‘Hubble’ project, Basement Spaceman returns to NZ with this new highly original ‘off planet’ show. Not to be missed.
You, Me, Everybody pushes the boundaries of what New Zealand knows of a genre that was formed on tradition and rules to create progressive bluegrass. Tickets for the 12 October Kumeu show. https://www.undertheradar.co.nz/gig/90975/You-Me-Everybody.utr. BYO, Paywave, Doors open at 7.30pm.
While upbeat bangers are part of their repertoire, this is no pub band, but rather a collection of the best of New Zealand’s acoustic instrumentalists that are searching for a new, dynamic sound that showcases the best of Americana in Aotearoa.
Referred to as New Zealand’s first “Bluegrass Supergroup”, the excitement around their inception saw them play their first live gig as openers for The Felice Brothers as part of the Americana fest at Auckland’s Tuning Fork. They recorded their EP a week later and in February 2020, You, Me, Everybody released their self-titled debut EP, which reached number 13 in the New Zealand album charts. This debut also saw them named as finalists for Best NZ Folk Artist, 2021 in the Aotearoa Music Awards. Their first full length album, Southern Sky, was released in January 2021, which again debuted in the top 20 of the NZ album charts. In 2023 they gained a new, worldwide audience after featuring in Netflix’s Sweet Tooth. Successful tours of both Australia and New Zealand followed and now the band are back for some intimate shows to celebrate what they have always done best and trial some new material as they work towards their third album.
