Auckland Transport is making changes to enhance pedestrian safety on Barbados Drive in Unsworth Drive.

This project is funded by the Upper Harbour Local Board Transport Capital Fund that aims to prioritise people crossing to access the Barabdos Reserve and the nearby retirement village.

Some of the changes we are making by March 2026 include:

• Upgrade the existing crossing island outside Barbados Reserve to a paired raised crossing to slow drivers on approach. A paired crossing will have a zebra crossing and a green cycle lane to give priority to people walking and cycling when crossing the road.

• Install new streetlight poles so people crossing are easier for motorists to see, especially at night

• Paint additional no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) approaching bus stop 3657 to improve visibility for buses and motorists and lead in and lead out markings to allow smooth bus entry and exit. Additionally, this bus stop will have the concrete platform extended to make it easier for people to get on and off the bus, including our customers with strollers and those who need extra help getting around.

• Upgrade bus stop 3816 by extending its concrete platform and clarifying markings for a smoother bus entry and exit

It is with sadness that we share the news of the passing of Rev. Alexander, former principal of the Russian Orthodox School, who passed away last Saturday.
Rev. Alexander was a pillar of strength and wisdom in our community, dedicating over a decade to nurturing and guiding students with compassion and commitment. His legacy will live on in the lives he touched and the positive impact he made.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and the entire Russian Orthodox School community during this difficult time. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew him.

A lovely member of our community is running a Voice & Movement Workshop on 30 August.
This 90-minute online session is designed not only for singers but for anyone who wants a healthier, more powerful voice with less effort. It’s a unique and effective blend of Functional Voice Training and Functional Movement (Feldenkrais®), helping participants free tension, improve breath support, and connect with their authentic sound.

Unfortunately our fairy garden was vandalised over the weekend with several houses being broken and stolen. We are very disappointed that this has occurred and we will have to dismantle many of the stands now. My apologies to the children and families that found joy in interacting with the installation, we will not be replacing the items. (The first image is what the one house used to look like, followed by pictures of what it looks like now.)

Do you visit Unsworth Reserve and enjoy the natural surroundings? Come for a stroll in the park with a local Geography teacher and learn more about the special storm water features in this park and how they will protect the community from future flooding events in a climate change world. We'll do some bird counts, talk about the special ecology of the park and you'll learn how to identify plant species and how to remove those 'pesky' weeds. Meet at the Unsworth ReservePlayground 10am on the 1st of August. Mums and buggies are welcome.
