WISE was formed in November 2016, when I saw a couple of bands playing in small clubs that needed to be heard on a big outdoor stage. Yoko Zuna, jamming a Wednesday night down at PSC, and WISO jamming Artworks, but the history behind it goes way back. I started running parties on Waiheke in 1999, when I threw a rave down at Dead Dog Bay for my 21st. Think it was the last time I ever saw Charlie DJ before he found Drum & Bass. That kicked it off for me, and after running a few notorious parties in my shed in Rocky Bay, I put TAOS, Hilt and Offbeat records in Artworks, running the bar, in what was my first official paid event. WAKE.
I took that brand to Dunedin, and ran a two-zone 18 hour party on the top of Signal Hill, took TAOS on a NZ tour, and then took off on a 4 year OE, before returning to Dunedin. After throwing a 3-zone Dance party on Dunedin’s Winter Solstice, the opportunity to rent Sammy’s came up, and together with my Cousin, we took it on. 4 years, a few hundred events and one huge learning experience later I returned to Waiheke with a baby almost born. I got a job running events at Sandbar, in Oneroa and continued hosting events there, before conditions became unsuitable there, I took that Vibe down to the Matiatia Venue, “The Bay” I ran events here until I retired to train in Education, doing a 2-year apprenticeship at Onehunga High School. That venue then closed down, and so when I returned, I was keen to see who had the lease, and if I could use it for events. It has a big outdoor stage. Ready to go. Getting permission to use it proved to be a nightmare, but good triumphed over evil corruption & greed in the end, and we rocked out three summer parties dubbed “Sun Sets” that were awesome events, and bought acts such as The Peacekeepers, K+Lab, Sunshine Soundsystem, Latinaotearoa, Sorceress, King Homeboy, and had so many awesome local acts back them up, All the Offbeat Records crew, Rook, and many more.
Over the Winter we brought Truth to Waiheke to play at Sandbar, and they absolutely rammed the place with Vibes.
The following summer I managed to take off running my own parties, to work with the absolute best in the business in NZ in my humble opinion; the mighty Fuzen machine, on their pinnacle event; Northern Bass. Learned heaps about big scale events. (WOW)
