Another tight, tense win for the Boys’ Cricket 1st XI, beating Glendowie College by one wicket.
Glendowie won the toss and chose to bat first, scoring 144. Zak Lambert took two early wickets with his in-swingers. Other good bowling came from Aahaan Melant, who produced another miserly performance — just 13 runs conceded from his 7 overs. Jack Lienert continued his development with his rapid, skiddy bowling, picking up 3 wickets.
With the bat, it was a bit of a liquorice all-sorts performance — plenty of early-season rust mixed in with some swashbuckling shots. Plaudits have to go firstly to Year 12 student Henry McMahon. Put yourself in his shoes for a minute. In his first game for the 1st XI, he fashioned an excellent run-out early on in the game — moving from his position at wicketkeeper to chase the ball to a very short fine-leg position before spinning on a dime and firing down the stumps. Then, having been behind the stumps for more than 40 overs, he walked out to bat at No. 11 with Selwyn needing just one run to win. He then survived four deliveries from one of the best bowlers in the entire competition — the first of which was a very well-directed bouncer that Henry adeptly avoided. An extraordinary circumstance handled incredibly well.
The second big story with the bat came from the player who scored the winning runs, Year 13 student Zak Lambert. In his final few games in his beloved red, Zak finally got the chance to show his skills with the bat. His 7 included one glorious off-drive, beautifully put away through the offside and down to the boundary for four. It also included the winning runs, as he slashed outside off stump to watch the ball fly down to third man. Top scorer with the bat was Aahaan Malant with 23.
It didn’t come easy — but a win’s a win — and the boys continue a somewhat remarkable run in the 1A Cricket competition: their fifth win this year, with four games to go.
Special thanks as always to groundsman Mark, who prepared a pitch that played very well — good pace, bounce, and carry through to the keeper. Also to our parents for their work in scoring and umpiring.
All up, Glendowie scored 144/10 and Selwyn scored 145/9.
From the Pitcaithly Field at Selwyn College, Selwyn take the win — beating Glendowie College by one wicket.
