🏉 NZSS Touch Champs wrap-up 🏉

Congratulations to our Mixed Touch team, who competed at the 2025 Bunnings NZSS Touch Championships in Rotorua last week.

In our second appearance at the tournament, it was about building on the learnings from the year before and looking to secure our first win(s) at the tournament.

While pool play proved to be tough, we got to experience playing the best of the best, with both finalists progressing from our pool. Impressive for a grade with over 40 teams!

The team managed to pull off three consecutive wins in the playoff stage to win the shield section of the tournament.

A big thank you to all players for your dedication and effort during the tournament and the training leading up to it.

Also, a big thanks to the team behind the team for making sure everything went smoothly. Warren Young (coach), Mr Rafferty and Ms Scott (managers), and the parents who came down to support and chip in.

This year’s Colts cricket team was made up of some of the most dedicated and resilient Year 9 and Year 10 boys. Their commitment and determination each week has been truly impressive. As a team, they’ve grown from being strangers to becoming a close-knit group, and their skills and abilities have consistently improved over the course of the season. The boys have earned frequent praise for their excellent sportsmanship from opposing teams, which is a testament to their character. We will miss Benji, Caleb, Daksh, and Saiteja as they move into the Senior Grades, but we’re excited for what next year’s Colts cricket season will bring!

Our sports staff has prepared a comprehensive 2025 Sports Handbook with information about all the sporting codes we offer here at Selwyn College. It will be updated regularly with new information. Most importantly, it has registration forms for each code for next year so if you are interested in signing up for a sport use the registration link on that sports page. We can then send you all the information about that sport.
Make sure to register as soon as you can as we will be having some sport trials at the end of this year for the 2025 summer season as it starts very early in Term 1.

A defiant 50 from Ruben Frederikson and a trio of wickets from Joel Sutherland weren’t enough for the Selwyn 2nd XI to take out the heavyweights of their pool, Macleans College. With the weather threatening, Selwyn chose to bat first. Despite the challenges of the grass wicket, and some exuberant on-field chat from the opposition, the boys started confidently at a decent strike rate. However, a flurry of wickets saw things looking precarious at 41/4. Ruben Frederikson took on the task of steadying the ship, slowly building his innings. He received good support from Andrew Lim (17), Zach Lambert (16), Alex Malan (15) and Hamish Valentine (14*). Falling shortly after reaching his fifty; Ruben had done the work to get the team to a respectable 180 all out.
Andrew Lim skittled their opener with his first ball, and together with Zach Lambert delivered a good start in the field having Macleans at 26/2 after 8 overs. Undeterred, the next pair of batters started to take the game away from Selwyn - sending fielders into the bushes and long grass searching for balls on numerous occasions. Then Joel Sutherland stepped up and delivered a great spell, snaring 3 wickets in his five overs, and bringing Selwyn back into the game. With the score at 153/6 thanks to a Rocco Fisher wicket, the boys searched for more scalps to claim an improbable victory. Alas, it was not to be, and Macleans cruised to victory in the 31st over.
Well done to the boys, playing on grass for the first time this season, and taking to the game with a great attitude. Everyone is looking forward to the final game of the season next Saturday.

The Selwyn College Boys 1st XI will remain in the 1A Secondary School Limited Overs competition in 2025!!

Following their win over Lynfield College a couple of weeks ago and Lynfield College losing last week the boys secured their playing card for the competition in 2025.

The season was punctuated with a 38 run loss yesterday to a desperate Rangitoto College who played like their position in the 1A competition depended on victory.

Bowling first Aahaan Melant produced good figures of 8 overs 3 for 22 and in his last game Callum Blyth picked up 3 wickets as well for the second season in a row securing his position as Selwyn College top wicket taker.

With the bat also in his last game Blair Sue scored 43 before he was the last man out caught at deep cover.

Ultimately for Selwyn College the result was purely academic as in the end it was a chance to farewell four Year 13 students who have made a huge contribution to Selwyn Cricket over the years. Daniel Pluck (outstanding skipper and leader), Blair Sue (wise and has produced outstanding performances with both bat and ball), Callum Blyth (huge heart and effort and top wicket taker with the ball) and Sammy Bridge (Selwyn's enforcer with the ball, excellent pace and bounce and an ever developing batter) all contributed in their own ways over the last few years and will be hugely missed as they move on in life's journey.

Lastly, an enormous thanks to team manager JP Randall. JP is on hand rain, hail or shine and is completely dedicated to the success of the team and Selwyn College and we remain hugely grateful for his enormous effort.

With that, the 2024 season is over and we look forward to what 2025 brings.

A huge congrats to our Junior Boys composite Waterpolo team, who finished in 2nd place at the NISS Division 2 Cup.

This is the first time we have entered a junior team in this competition, and they did an amazing job. We believe it to be the first medal at NISS/NZSS level for Selwyn College. Thank you to
For coaching the team this week, and to Naomi and Jack for managing.

Also, a big thank you to the five boys who have joined us this week to make this competition possible.

Congratulations to for setting the standard all competition, worthy winners indeed. And thank you to for organizing a great tournament.

The Girls 1st XI Cricket Team completed their season last night. Facing a talented Glendowie team, our girls struggled to stay with them throughout the match - losing by 48 runs.
At the end of the game, we farewelled our year 13 ladies; Ruby, Hannah and Meg, who have all given three wonderful years of service to girls' cricket at Selwyn and will all be sorely missed next year.
Player of the day was Caylee Link, who finished with 1 for 30 with the ball and top scored with 19 with the bat. She is pictured with last week's POD, Carys Silva.
We also farewelled coach Ms Parr-Thomson who is leaving Selwyn College at the end of this year. We wish her all the very best for the next stage in her career and thank her for her significant contribution to the team.
Trials and training will start up again early next year/term. All girls interested in playing cricket are more than welcome to attend. Bring your friends! It would be awesome to have 2 teams next year if possible, a Junior and 1st XI.
Have a great summer break!

The Selwyn 2nd XI took full advantage of their first home game this season. The boys were happy to be put into bat by Botany, keen to set an emphatic total on home soil. Daniel Mansfield (36 from 33 balls) and Liam Maclachlan (48 from 49) set a good starting pace. But the star of the show was Keshan Korala who carved out an incredible 133 from just 86 balls, including 18 fours and 5 sixes. He chose his shots well, finding gaps with ease, and sending the Botany fielders searching through the undergrowth to find the ball on numerous occasions. Supporting him were Hamish Valentine (28 from 29 balls); and Rocco Fisher (18) who rotated the strike nicely in his 100 run partnership with Keshan. Eventually falling to a catch at deep cover, Keshan left the field to the congratulations (and relief) of the opposition and applause from everyone on the sidelines.
Botany chasing down the final Selwyn total of 306/6 was a low chance - and tight bowling in the open spell made it more or less impossible. Andrew Lim allowed a miserly 9 runs from his 5 overs - securing a wicket and 3 maidens. Keshan showed his all round skill - netting 3 wickets in his 7 overs for only 14 runs. Fielding was strong - Henry McMahon taking 3 early catches as keeper, Andrew Lim 2 catches, and Zach Lambert toppling the bowler’s end wickets with a direct hit throw from the other end of the field for a great run-out. Alexander Malan, Joel Sutherland and Zach progressively took wickets, leaving Botany at 104/9. The final wicket refused to come - Botany playing very defensively - and the game limped through its final stages. Selwyn threw the ball around to a number of bowlers hoping for a breakthrough, and Daniel Mansfield finally put Botany out of their misery with a clean bowled from his very first ball to end the game at 123 all out in 36 overs. A great overall team effort - capped off by Keshan’s masterful individual performance.
