🏆 Jet and Ben soaring at the YSPOTY Awards🏆

On Thursday 27 November, Eden Park was filled with the brightest young sporting talent in the Auckland region, for the Young Sportsperson of the Year (YSPOTY) Awards.

Each sanctioned sport consisted of three finalists, regarded as the top three performers in their respective sports for the year. Selwyn College were fortunate to have two students, Jet Lin, and Ben Perez-Baldoni recognised as finalists for Table Tennis and Football respectively.

Ben received an award as a finalist for Football (boys), which is an incredible feat as a year 11 student. Jet was named as the winner of Table Tennis (boys). In addition, Jet was also nominated as a finalist for Young Sportsman of the Year, which is selectred from all winners for the boys sporting codes.

Congratulations to both students on their achievements, and no doubt there are bigger things to come for both of them.

Girls Open T20 Term 4 - Crossover Final Report. Today’s game was all about honouring our four Year 13 girls playing their final match for Selwyn College: Augustine Malcolm, Luna Burnes, Lily Dawson and Carys Silva, who have all represented the 1st XI since Year 9 with outstanding loyalty and commitment. The goal was simple — work hard, stay positive, and enjoy the occasion. The whole team stepped up, earning a well-deserved narrow win.

After winning the toss, Selwyn sent Rangitoto in to bat. They started strongly, but our spin attack turned the game around, restricting them to 87 off 20 overs. Top figures came from Caylee Link (3/19), Leura Harris (2/9), Martha Wilcox (2/6) and Luna Burnes, who conceded just two runs from her over.

In reply, Selwyn batted patiently, with captain Augustine Malcom and Martha Wilcox key to the chase. Rangitoto’s extras also helped swing the game our way.

Winning this grade is a fantastic achievement against strong cricketing schools, including MAGS, Baradene, Takapuna, St Kentigern and EGGS. Combined with our Summer Tournament Division 2 title, this caps an outstanding year. With many young players returning and talented Year 9s arriving, the future looks very bright.

A huge thank you to our departing Year 13s, our supportive parents, and the entire team for a memorable season. Special thanks to Kristen De Wet for her support and to groundsman Mark Williams for producing a brilliant pitch at short notice.

🥈Silver for our Junior Waterpolo team!! 🤽‍♂️🤽‍♀️

Congratulations to our junior mixed Waterpolo team, who finished runner-up at the North Island Cup last week in Auckland.

The team put in some great performances over the four days, and they should be super proud of their efforts, including commitment to 6am trainings on Friday mornings!

It has been awesome to see the growth of the team and every player throughout the year, starting back in term one.

A special mention to former head student, Benji Lowe, who has been coaching the team this season, as well as Naomi Lowe and Jack Pecsy who have been helping out behind the scenes.

Last game of the season and another excellent win for the Selwyn Boys 1st XI Cricket team. Playing against Botany Downs Secondary College, Selwyn won the toss and elected to bowl. Openers Jack Lienert and Aahaan Melant certainly ruffled some feathers early, causing some real discomfort with their mix of pace and bounce and their use of the conditions. With the pressure on, it didn’t take long for Selwyn to make some inroads, and in the end, BDSS were bowled out for 80 in their 20 overs — the match was shortened due to rain. The best bowling came from the skipper, Max Randell, in his final game for Selwyn College, bringing the figures of 4 over, 3 wickets for 17 runs.

The bat was dominated by opener Divesh Kamaleswaren, who scored 47 off just 34 balls. Divesh has been threatening an innings of this nature in recent weeks, and on this day, he batted with no fear. He was particularly impressive through the point region and down the ground.

A comfortable win, but nonetheless an enjoyable one, marking the conclusion of an excellent year for the Boys 1st XI. Botany Downs were bowled out for 80, and Selwyn scored 81 in the 12th over with 3 wickets down. A win by seven wickets.

For the season, Selwyn placed 5th out of 8 teams, with 7 wins and 7 losses. A very solid effort for the year. Huge thanks to the parents for their support; to JP, the team manager, for his organisation; to Shane Goonasakeera, our support coach, for his technical insight and support; to Mark for his work making Selwyn one of the top pitches in Auckland; and last but not least, Max Randell, who has been an outstanding Captain. The Boys 1st XI Cricket team has had a number of impressive young people as Captain in the last few years, and Max can certainly put his name alongside that group with pride. We look forward to the 2026 season starting in February!

Well done to our junior bowlers today who participated in the junior pairs competition.

For all of them, it was their first time playing Bowls in a competition environment. Great fun was had by all, with all three pairs nothing up a few wins throughout the day. Special mention to Laiko Batan and Laurie Lin, who won every single match on the day!

Thank you to for putting this event on for the students.

Our Selwyn junior boys and girls volleyball teams wrapped up an incredible couple of days at the College Sport Auckland Junior Volleyball Championships, delivering outstanding performances and showcasing impressive resilience on the court.

Our junior girls had a phenomenal run, taking out their division in a nail-biting final against Southern Cross Campus. After splitting the first two sets, the girls held their nerve and powered through the third set to claim the division title. It was an exciting, hard-fought match and a well-deserved victory for the team.

The junior boys also had a strong tournament, finishing in the top 15 of their division. Their final game against Elim College went the full distance, with the boys stepping up under pressure and securing the third set to finish their campaign on a high note.

It was a great couple of days of competition, teamwork, and school spirit. A huge thank you to our amazing coaches, Paolo and Max, for their time, dedication, and support throughout the season. Our teams wouldn’t be where they are without you! A big thank you to Gab Espenilla for capturing some unreal photos of our teams during the tournament!

Another impressive performance from the Selwyn College Boys First XI saw the team record a solid win over Rangitoto College on the Pitcaithly field on Saturday.

Selwyn set the tone early with the ball, thanks to an outstanding opening spell from Jack Lienert, whose first four overs went for just five runs. Bowling with real pace and vigour from the Kohimarama Road end, he built early pressure that led to two sharp run outs through excellent fielding. He finished with 8 overs 1 for 19. Aahan Malant then stepped up to finish the innings, claiming two wickets in two balls and finishing with 6 overs 2 for 16.

With the bat, Freddie Blythe anchored the innings. His expert 57 runs from 78 ball created the base for the team to bat around. Aahan Malant then put the game to bed as he, almost with nochelonce, worked the ball into the gaps and scored 27 off 40 balls.

Selwyn now sit fifth on the table with 18 points from a possible 30, heading into the final round against Botany Downs College.

Final scores - Rangitoto College batting first 152/10. Selwyn College 156/4. Selwyn win by 6 wickets
