Jason Eli’s music production career grew from a love of making people dance and a desire to explore musical genres from House, Soul & Hip-Hop to Disco, Latin and beyond. From humble beginnings as a kid growing up in London watching his older cousins play live funk music in their loft, he’s progressed to remix songs for icon’s including Whitney Houston, perform with DJ’s including Frankie Knuckles

and produce music for labels including Motown, E.M.I. As one half of the Marvel & Eli production duo, Jason has produced and remixed five UK top 40 hits. Back in the 90’s, he held a four year DJ residency at Ministry of Sound when the Ministry was at the cutting edge of underground House music. He regularly warmed up the club’s main room dance floor for DJ’s like Todd Terry & DJ Harvey. Jason’s toured with legends like Techno pioneer Kevin Saunderson, ex Studio 54 resident Kenny Carpenter, as well as Roger Sanchez, Norman Jay, and many more. Moving into the late 1990’s and always on the look out for new percussive soulful sounds, Jason dived into London’s growing Broken Beat scene, which spoke to his Jazz influences, releasing records for Bugz In The Attic’s head honcho Orin “Afronaught” Walters and starting his own Groovadelica record label. Fast forward to the early 2000’s and Jason made a big move – from London to… New Zealand! The call of love hit (how could we have a story without a love interest?) and in following a beautiful Kiwi girl back to her homeland, he left the London nightlife for Antipodean beaches, greenery and a less frenetic vibe. Living in Auckland (NZ’s cultural hub) Jason continued to spread his soulful gospel by growing his Groovadelica record label into a successful club night & radio show (reaching 20,000 listeners every week). He also launched (with co-presenter Karl Benton) the Groovadelica podcast, which features music, interviews and opinions on some of the worlds most exciting and influential bands & artists. Now, Jason is back in London, soaking up the city’s unique vibes, DJ’ing, producing and exploring new musical landscapes. His soulful live sets draw on both the classic (Soul, Disco, Latin & Jazz) and the new (House, UK Garage, Drum & Bass, Broken Beat, Future). MiSoul radio’s Marcia Carr has described his sound as “High dose nu-boogie”.

It’s always nice to get a sign that the music you’re putting out is getting heard and appreciated - sometimes it’s hard to tell - but I gotta big up the people who’ve got in touch to compliment or buy a copy of Soul Prophet’s “Back To Dilla” 7” single - too many to mention here.. and to put a cherry on the cake, it was very cool to see one of my musical heroes start following little old Groovadelica Records. I'm gonna have a spring in my step today!

So good to catch up with Bobby Brazuka yesterday. Its been a while since I've seen his smiling face in the flesh. We're planning on maybe doing a Groovadelica Sunday daytime party in January in Auckland. Anyone around in the city on Sunday 19th Jan for an afternoon of Caribbean (or maybe African?) food, wicked music and good times?? Bit of market research going on here. Answers please below! Any ideas are welcome ....

My son Kaia is always playing tunes at top volume, so when he asked me about DJing- I was well happy! Pretty cool to be showing him how to use the DJ gear. He's into it!

The back-garden studio build is making progress - After a month of crap weather, technical hitches, waiting on the builders etc. etc. It’s nearly there! Insulation done... inside walls done... painting done (big-ups to Richard & Kim the painters!).
Crawling under the house to do the electrical / data cables? - That was NOT fun! - but now done.
Still need to sand and coat the floor, but I’m nearly ready to put the DJ & music gear in the room! Yusss!
