WORLD MUSIC IN A TRUE FOLK ROOTS FUSION 🎵🪕🎻🎸

Prepare your dancing feet, vocal chords and heart! Here come Across the Great Divide, featuring traditional, contemporary and original songs and tunes from Celtic and Americana roots. Join Karen Jones, Tony Burt and Hanna Wiskari Griffiths as they visit Balcairn Hall in September..

Americana dobro player, guitar master and composer Tony Burt, Scots traditionalist on harp, vocals and guitar Karen Jones, and Scandinavian soprano sax player Hanna Wiskari Griffiths bring together instruments and genres which seldom grace the same stage, weaving Celtic airs and Americana traditions into high energy dance tunes, complete with social comment and heritage. And their message through it all is their love and respect for the shared traditions, friendship, community, unity and whakapapa. A true folk roots fusion!

An Across The Great Divide concert isn’t a quiet affair. Strap yourself in for a wild, toe tapping and emotionally laden journey, perfectly held together by their passion for their traditions.
This is Across the Great Divide’s second tour with Arts on Tour New Zealand and their previous show at Balcairn was a huge success!

THE JOHN GRENELL FAMILY TRIBUTE SHOW 🥰

The Balcairn Hall is honoured and delighted to host the John Grenell Family Tribute Show - 27th Sept 2024 with their concert for their late father John Grenell…

The children of legendary country singer John H**e Grenell come together to celebrate the life and music of ‘New Zealand’s Country Gentleman’. A household name in the ‘60s and ‘70s, John was a best-selling and award-winning artist with 17 albums and many singles to his name, outselling the Beatles in this country, and his soundtrack 'Welcome to our World' played for the Toyota commercial for over 10 years.

Gathering for John’s funeral in 2022, the Grenells arranged a Memorial Concert to honour John and his music. They played together in the James Hay Theatre in Christchurch to an audience of thousands, both in the theatre and watching the online livestream. Many of the audience sent heartfelt compliments, expressing hopes of future appearances.

Despite the geographical division of the siblings, the tribute show has now arrived.

Denver, Oakley, Redford and Amiria grew up with music in the air on the family farm, where their parents ran the Whitecliffs Music Festivals from 1982 to 1995. All genres of music and workshops inspired the young Grenells to pick up instruments and form their own groups. Over the years these have included Shapeshifter, Bunyip, the Ōtautahi Allstars, The Swan Sisters and as well-regarded solo artists in their own right, with a collection of NZ Music Awards and nominations among them.

With Denver on bass, Oakley on guitar and vocals, Redford on drums and Amiria on guitar and vocals, the Grenells will deliver a set of well-known songs from John’s extensive repertoire including ‘Welcome to My World,’ ‘Blue Smoke,’ ‘Streets of Laredo’ and other songs the family performed with John over the years.

Audience comments 2022

"A beautiful and very memorable concert. Long may the legendary Grenell family music live on. Treasured memories of wonderful music from the heart.”

Please note that this is a FRIDAY night concert and that tickets at $30 are only available online at https://events.humanitix.com/john-grenell-family-tribute-show/tickets

A huge thank you to the incredible Elgregoe the Magician for mesmerizing us with his astounding illusions and spectacular showmanship at the Balcairn Hall.! 🥳

We had so many laughs😆. We loved the multitude of animals that appeared out of thin air; the dove, the rare and ever-so-beautiful macaw parrot, the new recruit parrot and 2 other parrots, the gigantic magic wand, rolling pizza in the pizza box, the funny Basil the rabbit with his helium galloon, the incredible linking rings (still can't figure that one out 😅), the big book of 'Nothing' and 'Something', the magic mirror and so so many more tricks. What a wonderful afternoon at the Balcairn Hall 🥰

Thanks to everyone who came to watch the marvellous Dr T & The Dangerous Women last Saturday night 🤩

I think we can all agree it was a blast, great musicians, fantastic audience, a bit of dancing and all complete with an amazing night light aurora sky show at half time 😍

We also thank all the committee members, their family and friends who helped out on the night. We love you can appreciate all the great things you do to make these events happen 😘

Here’s a review from the lovely Balcairn Hall committee member, David Lowe:

“Dr. T and the Dangerous Women performed at the Balcairn Hall last Saturday, The band delivered an impressive performance, showcasing their unique blend of Americana music with desert and California borderlands influences. The band's music style is a fusion of different genres, with a focus on Americana music. They played a range of original songs and covers, all arranged in their unique style - from slow heartfelt ballads, to the sweetest 'Andrew Sisters' style of female harmonies, to face-melting guitar, violin and keyboard licks, to rocking dance numbers - the band thrilled us for over two hours.

The band consists of five talented members, each bringing their own musical expertise to the table. The members are:

- Dr. Hyram Twang (guitars, male lead vocals)
- Claire Louise (female lead vocals)
- Sophia Bidwell (accordion and piano)
- Anna Bowen (fiddle and mandolin)
- Alexandra Bidwell (stand-up bass, bass guitar, and cello)

The audience was thoroughly entertained by the band's performance, with some even moved to tears by the beautiful ballads - especially Claire's beautiful Spanish rendition of 'Donde Voy' and Alex's stunning bass line in the amazing finale song 'The Maker', The band's energy and enthusiasm were infectious, and the crowd was clearly enjoying themselves throughout the show, dancing the night away.
And while the band played up a storm inside the Hall, the electromagnetic storm outside lit up the sky leaving everyone with a night never to be forgotten!”

Feel free to write your own reviews or notes of appreciation in the comments below ❤️

Land of the Long Long Drive -

This show for the whole family is the third tour from the 2024 stable of touring artists with Arts On Tour NZ. And it will be a long long drive of over 6000 kilometres for the cast and crew of the company. And the story goes….

Wētā, Tuna and Kārearea are mates of Gary the Glowworm, and are traveling to attend his rave in the cave birthday party. The friends face a number of trials on the road, and learn that despite their differences, they can achieve their goals by working together! Land of the Long Long Drive is a story that has been “Loved by...audience[s] from tots to grandparents” (Deborah Rea, Theatreview).

A tale for Kiwi kids, featuring iconic NZ creatures, landscapes and fresh waiata by NZ singer-songwriter Benny Tipene. Winner of the 3–8-year-old section of Playmarket’s Plays for the Young Competition, Land of the Long Long Drive brings you a laugh out loud, inspiring adventure of three unlikely heroes.

This show jumps into life with beautiful costumes from Gridley by Victoria, Costumier for the Royal New Zealand Ballet, and support from Capital E National Theatre for Children through their Creative Residency programme.
