There's two triathlon and two duathlon options, plus a 1500m swim only option.

I almost can't believe that it's 17 years since I took this photo of Michael Huntley, one of Marlboroughs best endurance athletes. This is in the 2004 Marlborough Quadrathon. He's just run from (what was then) the Paddy Barry's carpark to the top of the Wither Hills and return. I was the swimmer in a team that also included Matt Thompson and Deane Caughey. We broke the race record that day.

Sunday's race at Waikawa will be the 15th Michael Huntley Memorial Triathlon, with male and female fastest times trophies awarded in Michael's name.

Thanks dude, you inspired lots of us.

Mark.

Looks like a perfect day for a Triathlon!

For many years this event was the Andrew Jones Memorial Triathlon. An iconic top of the South event for secondary school students, in memory of a promising young triathlete, taken way to early in a cycling accident.

Marlborough Duathlon Series 2020: Toilet Roll Edition

For eight years we have been providing community events for anyone that wants to have a go at a multi sport event. Regular exercise is good for everything from physical to mental health. We believe those things are going to be more important than ever in the next few months.

With most event opportunities shut down until further notice, we need to innovate in order to provide a motivational goal, but also keep community health and safety first and foremost.

So here’s what we think might work in our community;

We will still run the Duathlon Series but you will take part on your own. How?

You will enter online as per normal.

We will allocate you a number, which you will write on your hand before you turn up.

We will also allocate you a start time, with no more than three people starting at one time. Start times would be 30 - 60 seconds apart.

You turn up no more than 10 minutes before you start

Race information briefing will be online, no need to stand around before the start.

No high fives, hand shakes or hugs at the end. But lots of smiles. Results will be live online so you can check your results immediately.

Every finisher gets a toilet roll. No seriously, we need a toilet roll sponsor!

We would run the event every month from April for 6 months

Every alternate fortnight we would have a fun run/walk at the Farm Park which would increase in distance each month, culminating in a half marathon distance in September. This would also include limited numbers with pre allocated start times. Results would be live on line as per the Duathlons.

Tentative start date for the first Duathlon would be Sunday April 19, with the first fun run/walk happening two weeks later.

The events would be self supporting. That is, the courses will be marked and available as maps on the website, but no marshals will be on course. Old Skool adventure style.

If you would like to take part, or support the event with spot prizes or awards, then please get in touch. If you can sponsor a toilet roll for every participant, you might even get to be the naming sponsor!

Information and circumstances seem to be changing by the day, so we will wait a week before confirming it’s all go. Watch this space.
