Jake Lambert has had more seconds than he cares to count with Takapoto Chacdasca PS, but today he shed that bogey and took the win convincingly in the Partridge Jewellers/FOPE Bronze Tour second qualifier.
The combination were second behind Jesse Linton and Carado GHP in the opening qualifier so Jake was pretty pleased to pop his good mate into fifth this time round.
“She can be a little spooky sometimes,” said Jake of his German import. “The plan was to see how she went in the opening round on the grass. She jumped well, and we’re here to be competitive, so we pushed it. She is naturally fast and careful so I thought we should try and win the class. It is really nice to get that win today.”
Chacdasca was bought through Paul Schockemohle, who Jake worked with for three-and-a-half years. “We have a nice connection with Paul’s operation. We bought her as a six-year-old and have been slowly producing her.” She is a lovely mare.”
Thirteen of the original 51 starters came back for the jump-off where third to go Kimberley Carrington and Double J Saga lit a spark under the rest of the field with a double clear in 32.76 seconds.
Jake and Chacdasca were right behind them and wasted no time in bettering their efforts with a clean 31.9-second round. Last to go was Andrew Cottle aboard Born 2 Fly who gave it a good nudge but came up just short with a faultless 32.31 second effort, which saw them finish second and nudged Kimberley into third.
Jake also had homebred Takapoto Formaggio through to the jump-off. The gelding is by Samantha McIntosh’s Olympic mount Check In II and out of Argento who was ridden by Samantha and fellow Olympian Daniel Meech. “We’re taking it slowly with him but he did a lovely double clear today, so that’s nice to see.”
Jake is enjoying riding the Frank Rothenberger courses and says today’s flowing design was an absolute pleasure.

Elise Edwards-Smith is counting her lucky stars . . . all of them . . . after riding to a superb win in the Harrison Lane Amateur Final this morning aboard her showy gelding DSE Gotta Legacy.
“I am very excited,” she said. “It’s not usually me who does the winning. I didn’t even think about winning out there, just about giving him a good ride. Those are the biggest fences he has ever seen.”
She and wife Donna opted to come showjumping at the Classic rather than eventing this weekend.
“It’s the surfaces here,” she says. “It builds so much confidence in them.”
The Amateur Final proved tricky for many, with only four combinations of the 37-starters finishing with clean slates.
First out over the Eryn Duffy-designed course was Tessa Ranger aboard Dakarra WHS who had an expensive run out to finish with four faults in their 56.4 second round and in third place. Elise was next riding a hoof-perfect clear round in 60.6. Annabelle Gourlie and Arlo II had a rail at the first in their 57.31 second round for fourth, with Taryn Beattie and LT Holst Diamond Queen the fastest of the four faulters to place second.
Elise was a bit lost for words about the win but so proud of Baloo, as she calls Gotta Legacy. “I just tried to keep a rhythm going and not worry about what anyone else was doing.
“Baloo is extremely scopey and quite stallion-like as he was gelded late,” she said. “He can be quite feisty too – he looks so cute you wouldn’t expect that! It is unbelievable to win.”
They are trained by Donna as well as Toni and Colin McIntosh. “I feel blessed to have three great coaches who all speak the same language.”
Elise felt the courses had been beautiful all week and she’d thoroughly enjoyed her first Classic.

🥇 Elise Edwards-Smith (Waerenga) DSE Gotta Legacy
🥈 Taryn Beattie (Nelson) LT Holst Diamond Queen
🥇 Tessa Ranger (Whitford) Dakarra WHS

The Diesel Donkey delivered once again.
Sophie Scott and her ever-consistent Glenbrooke Rich as Roses produced a faultless clear in the jump-off of the APL Window Solutions Silver Tour second qualifier this afternoon to take the win ahead of competitive 38-strong field.
Eight progressed through to the Frank Rothenberger designed jump-off with Samantha van Lierde and Stallone K getting things off to a cracker start, coming home clear in 56.19 seconds. Then came Francesca Corich who was hit with her last fence bogey aboard Perseus MVNZ to finish with four faults in 53.2 for fifth, followed by a four fault round from Olivia Newsom aboard Royal MVNZ in 52.42.
Sophie and her giant grey came and flew round in 51.86, laying the challenge for those to follow. Emma Gaze and Kowhai Bug gave it their best effort but came up just short with four faults in 52.07 for third place.
Sophie was rapt with Rich as Roses who has been super consistent this season. He was out for two years with a tendon injury and this is his first full season back, but he seems as strong as ever.
“He has come back so well and really loves this 1.35m height,” says 23-year-old Sophie. “The aim is always to win. Today the course was a lot more technical with more questions and options. We wanted to be clean and fast – you’ve gotta turn and burn!”
The combination had a life in the opening round but they didn’t dwell on that.
“He’s reasonably easy to ride . . . he’s one of those horses you always smile when you are on them, and he is always so happy in the arena. This is another great win for him in what has been a very consistent season.”

🥇 Sophie Scott (Palmerston North) Glenbrooke Rich as Roses
🥈 Samantha van Lierde (Cambridge) Stallone K
🥉 Emma Gaze (Ohaupo) Kowhai Bug

21/02/2025

Kerikeri horsewoman Kate Hewlett has competed at the highest of levels, eventing at 5* in the UK but winning the Brandt Pro Am opening qualifier today brought her plenty of pleasure.
She and Redcliffs Calisto flew home clear in the one round class, stopping the clock at 66.3 seconds. Behind her Stephanie Anderson and LT Holst Elsie K crossed the flags in 67 and Megan Stephens with Gale third in 68.48. The top seven combinations were all clear.
Kate, who has taught many a rider and produced plenty of horses, was chuffed with the efforts of her homebred horse who is by her former top jumper Capatino GNZ.
Before the class, she watched a video of herself and Calisto competing in a 1.2m competition and realised while she thought she was riding along at a good pace . . . she wasn’t.
“I was way too slow and he had to try too hard, so this time I started fast and kept it up.”
So at 50-year-old, she opted for a different tactic – and it worked.
“You just think you are going faster than you are so it is good to watch yourself on a video.”
She felt the courses today worked well for Calisto. “He’s only ever done one seven-year-old and this is his first time at a straight 1.25m. I have been doing a lot of hill work on him to build him up a bit.”
Kate clocked the horse as one for her future when he was born. “I had my eye on him as my next World Cup horse . . . we’ll see how he goes.”
Takapoto is very much a family affair for Kate with daughters Rita and Keira also competing at the Classic.
“I just said to (partner) Tim that this was looking like my first Takapoto with no ribbons and both the girls have two each.”

🥇 Kate Hewlett (Kerikeri) Redcliffs Calisto
🥈 Stephanie Anderson (Taupo) LT Holst Elsie
🥉 Megan Stephens (Waikato) Gale

The speed queen delivered once again for Cambridge teen Tara Gower. Riding the Queen Bee of her barn, Tara Gower swooped in to take the Cambridge Grains Cooper Tour opening qualifier, in a 49-strong class that produced 26 clears so time was absolutely of the essence.
Tara and Double J Image’s 57.81 second effort mid-field proved uncatchable. Sarah Nelson and SP Petite Du Pas were second with their 60.21 second round, with Jesse Linton and Copyright MH third in 60.54.
“She’s always known as my little speed queen,” said a very proud Tara who has twice previously won the Copper Tour Final. “I just went for a nice efficient round. I did an inside line from three to four – I think we were the only ones to do it – and that worked well. I know this mare inside out and we are a good team.
She’s had Double J Image for six years and they enjoyed their first Copper Tour Final victory at just their fourth show together. She always knows best and while it is often her way or the highway she has an absolute heart of gold. She loves her job as much as I love mine.”
Tara loves competing at Takapoto. “It’s a fun hunting ground for us – the facilities are the best, the quality of the horses, the competition and just everything. You can’t come here and expect to win with a clear round.”
With two horses now qualified for the Copper Tour, Tara is eyeing the quinella. “That’s my goal,” she says.
“It’s so special to win here – it just means the world to me, and especially this class.”

🥇 Tara Gower (Cambridge) Double J Image
🥈 Sarah Nelson (Taupo) SP Petite Du Pas
🥉 Jesse Linton (Cambridge) Copyright MH

Julie Davey saved the best for last in the G.H. MUMM Gold Tour second qualifier, steering LT Holst Freda to a well-earned win after a four strong jump-off.
Ahead of her Laura Inkster and her showy grey Rodrigo MVNZ had a clear round in 57.1 seconds putting the pressure on Julie to go both clear and fast. Makenzie Causer and Dolce Del Colle had a rail at number 10 for four faults in 52.63 for third while Francesca Corich aboard Bannockburn ECPH had a rail and time for five faults in their 60.8 second round for fourth.
As understated as ever, Julie was both pleased and proud of her 10-year-old mare. “She jumped very well out there,” she said. “I just wanted to go double clear and better my fifth place in yesterday’s first qualifier.”
She knew she had to push to beat Laura’s time and frankly was “sick of coming second”.
Julie and Freda, who in January won the FEI World Cup (NZ) Series, have had mixed success at Takapoto but it is a show she loves to come to. “The courses are very nice and I think the ground is the best it has ever been,” she said.
Julie says she’ll stick to her tried and true method for the final, with the aim of double clear.
“Then I’ll just hope for a fast round.”

🥇 Julie Davey (Hastings) LT Holst Freda
🥈 Laura Inkster (Clevedon) Rodrigo MVNZ
🥉 Makenzie Causer (Christchurch) Dolce Del Colle

20/02/2025

It’s time to call Oamaru’s Gillies sisters the quinella kids.
Today elder sister – by a snip – Samantha, won the Shoof Young Rider, with Emma second, but in January at Nationals those results were reversed.
The two are as thick as thieves . . . unless they go head-to-head in a jump-off, and then all bets are off. There were grins all round today with each celebrating the other’s efforts at their first-ever Takapoto Classic.
Just four of the original 18 combinations came back for the jump-off over another beautifully designed Frank Rothenberger course.
Nineteen-year-old Samantha was first out and set a cracking pace aboard Lumarzo fair flying down the last line to come home clear in 35.28 seconds. Hot on her heels was 18-year-old Emma aboard Benrose Black Jack who held back a smidgen to the last, coming home clear but in 35.9.
Catalina Rocco and Orietta MVNZ had a rail in their 41.76 second round for third, with Liv Newsom and Charmed Escudo MSNZ clocking the fastest time of 39.13 but paid for the speed with eight faults.
Samantha knew she had to ride a good clear in the first and with that in the bag, give it her all in the jump-off. “I had nothing to lose,” she says.
“I knew that last line was a nine . . . but a really long one!”
She’s had 15-year-old Lumarzo for four years. The mare was out for 18 months with a tendon injury but Samantha figures she’s come back better than ever.
“It’s pretty special to win here at our first time at Takapoto.” The teens are trained by Lisa Coupe and their mother.
Even better the riders had their parents Phillipa and David on hand to celebrate. “It’s cool to have them here for this,” says Samantha.

20/02/2025

Kate Disley-Ormond is a lifetime rider, more known for her success as an eventer, but today she showed she’s not a one-trick pony, heading home a competitive Harrison Lane Amateur second qualifier class.
She and Ngahiwi Gruffalo were one of 11 from the original 36 starters to come back to be challenged again by course designer Eryn Duffy. Kate was last out. Ahead of her Tyler Amrein aboard Double J Britz who flew around in 41.49 but Kate wasn’t having a bar of it and steered her eight-year-old gelding home in 40.25 seconds for the win. Coming in third was Brooke Knight-Willis (Auckland) on Glenara Gold Dust in 42.3. The top five were all double clear.
Kate has only been pure showjumping for a year but continues to event the babies.
She got Gruffalo as a five-year-old and quickly adds he’s definitely the quirkiest horse she’s ever had. “He’s still pretty special,” she says. “I tried to event him but he just jumped too big so at Horse of the Year Show last year we switched to straight showjumping.”
It’s been a successful and action-packed year for the mum of two but one of the biggest highlights for her was bringing Jeff McVean on as her coach six months ago.
“It changed the way I rode totally,” she says, “and the way the horse was going. It has made a massive difference. Us eventers aren’t that good at showjumping! Cross country is different – you can gallop at those but in showjumping everything can fall so it makes it scary.”
Her plan in the opening round of the second qualifier was for a quiet round but once she was through to the jump-off threw caution to the wind and went for it.
“I just thought I may as well give it a good go.”
It’s a big win for her at her first ever Takapoto Classic. “I am not overly competitive but I am on a horse who can really jump!”

🥇Kate Disley-Ormond (Clevedon) Ngahiwi Gruffalo
🥈 Tylah Amrein (Tauranga) Double J Britz
🥉 Brooke Knight-Willis (Auckland) Glenara Gold Dust

20/02/2025

It’s back to back wins for Rotorua policewoman Hannah Ashworth in the Harrison Lane Amateur Qualifier, albeit on different mounts.
Last year the mum-of-one took the class aboard Just Jack, and this year it was with her winning 2024 five-year-old qualifier Double J Lyric.
“I just wanted to go out and have fun,” said Hannah, “but I definitely wanted to win!”
She bought Lyric as a one year old and has done everything with her since, making it such a special victory. “She is so forgiving and deserves this. It’s cool she gets a ribbon to show how amazing I think she is.”
World commitments meant the combination had to miss yesterday’s six-year-old qualifier so she was chuffed with today’s win.
“The course was just beautiful out there – it always is. The footing is perfect and Lyric loves it here. She is such a consistent horse.”
The Amateur Qualifier was a very fast class, with 14 of the 37 starters coming home clean. Hannah’s 58 second effort proved uncatchable. Kate Ramsey and Lady Bug came home in 58.8 for second with Ellie Bestwick and Captura third in 63.08.

🥈 Kate Ramsey (Pukeatua) Lady Bug
🥉 Ellie Bestwick (Kerikeri) Captura

February 2020 sees the return of New Zealand's premier Show Jumping event

Takapoto Estate Show Jumping is a two week event for all ages showcasing the best of New Zealand and Australia's riders at Mitch and Kate Plaw's spectacular 600 acre property on the shores of Lake Karapiro in the Waikato. The show is held annually between late January and March.

The event aims to bring a taste of elite European show jumping to New Zealand equestrian fans. As well as New Zealand riders, we also have competitors flying from as far as Australia, Canada, Japan, Germany, France, Mexico and Brazil.
