Learnt SO much at this year’s APS Convention 2023 in Syracuse, New York.

A key learning is that COURAGE is needed for anyone delving into HYBRIDISING, you need to toss most of your seedlings after 4 years or so once you have seen what they produce WHEN MATURE.

The reason is that inferior forms shouldn’t be disseminated. We should courageously strive for excellence in the PAEONIASPHERE and that takes SPACE and TIME.

I was asked whether this plant were a Paeony. Her concern was that it smelt terrible. The bloom ts a large double. on closer questioning, I discovered that the plant is a Woody Paeony.

Can anyone help with this as I have never smelt a stinky Paeony?

For anyone interested in breeding Paeonia varieties, the photo is of a Species Paeony from the Christchurch Botanic Gardens.
Species Paeonies are the original stock plants that still grow wild in various parts of the cooler temperate Northern Hemisphere.

Their genes are pure, and they come true from seed. H1 crosses are fairly predictable. However back-crosses, H2, produce much more variety.

Most garden Paeonies are the result of generations of crosses.
You may have noticed that some Paeonies don't set seed so they produce pods but empty ones. eg. the Corals rarely set seed.
Having a knowledge of what varieties would be worth crossing gives breeders a huge advantage. We heard about this at our 2022 field trip.

Key to good breeding is keeping accurate records and working to ensure that the parent plants are definitely identified.

Such refined and nuanced colours...

Peony ‘Gates of Rome ‘ the soft pink and yellow color tones are very subtle as it ages it can get vey double and a little bit more stronger in color .
Blooms around the 12th of May making it quite an early peony in this unique color .
The flower size is also as you can see impressive .
Suitable as garden plant but also has good cut -flower qualities .

The club members went out to visit two farms today. The first was a look at Paeony breeding - we saw some amazing results, the fruit of many, many years' labour and planning. Thank you Paul & Esther.

The second farm produces top quality blooms for export, even some excellent yellow Seidel Super. Thank you Andrew and Carey.

If you are a PAID Christchurch Paeony club member we have 2 events coming soon.

The first is a trip to two Peony farms this Saturday. It is likely to be wet but so far we have not cancelled.

The first one is to meet our patrons, Esther & Paul Simmons and from there we'll go out to Kirwee to hear from a grower about his bloom exports.

Just bring gumboots and an umbrella and a small plate of afternoon tea food please. See you at 3pm.

There will be a presentation ALL ABOUT PAEONIES at the Riccarton Horticultural Society meeting on Wednesday 9th November 7:30pm at St Peter's Church Hall Upper Riccarton/Church Corner.

There is parking via Main South Road - see photo - both at the venue and on the street. (See Google photo below)

This is a great group of knowledgeable gardeners. They have an excellent SALES table and can advise on general gardening matters. There is no cost for visitors.
