A smorgasbord of winter waves was on offer over the weekend; Dunno’s really turned it on for those lucky punters who could get out and get wet. Both the North and South Coast had good waves, over the hill was bloody pumping.

The pig snout is in full flow today as heavy rain hits St Clair/Dunedin. The pig snout system connects to the outlet at St Clair Beach, and as a kid, I used to go through the tunnel between each (there used to be a big steel door by the pool for entry before the new wall was extended out in the 2000s).
I wonder when Ocean Beach/St. Clair becomes a marine reserve later this year if it can still flow out at St. Clair, as it's bound to pick up a few nasty bugs and rubbish when heavy rain hits!
It would be interesting to see the council test the water out front of it tomorrow and see what the safety levels are after a big downpour!

I was recently lucky enough to get access to Dunedin's lesser known Cargill’s Castle, more a castle in name than in fact. It was built for Edward Cargill, eighth child of city founder William Cargill, in the late 19th century, who called it The Cliffs.
The original mansion had 21 rooms and was one of the first buildings in New Zealand of the Italianate architectural style.
The nickname ‘Cargill’s Castle’ appears to have been used from shortly after the house was complete and quickly superseded ‘The Cliffs’
The Cargill’s Castle trust hope to have this open to the public in the next 3 years. If this does happen it will be another great asset for Dunedin. The view up on the cliffs is amazing and as a teen, when the inside stairs were still intact, I remember being in awe of the views from the roof top.

Came across this pic of the old sea wall today ( photo by L Micmillan ) , shows the great set of much easier stairs that we used for accessing/exiting the beach of Beach street ,def a few rocks to get over at low tide, but way better design than the current modern designed steps / rocks there now !! 🤙

I might off cut my sleeves of from my old 2022 wettie a bit late this year, I only managed 2 surfs in it before a polar southerly front hit and the water temp plummeted by mid march.

Another stinking hot day at T Bay for day 4, waves have dropped a bit but still surface.
