A few snaps of my favourite wee NZ bird the Silver eye or wax eye / tauhou photographed in St Clair.
In New Zealand, the silvereye was first recorded in 1832. It arrived in greater numbers in 1856, and it is assumed that a migrating flock was swept eastwards by a storm. As an apparently self-introduced bird it is protected as a native New Zealand species. Its Māori name, tauhou, means "stranger" or more literally, "new arrival".

Ive had 3 kererū, New Zealand wood pigeons feasting on my plums over the last week.
Fyi after eating, kererū often sun themselves while digesting their food. This behaviour can lead to the fruit fermenting in the bird's crop, particularly during warm summer weather, producing alcohol that causes the bird to become intoxicated.

When we see a red sky at night, this means that the setting sun is sending its light through a high concentration of dust particles. This usually indicates high pressure and stable air coming in from the west. Basically good weather will follow

So, between the hail, rain, and the relentless southwest wind, was it worth heading out for a 6:30 a.m. surf? 🤔 Absolutely! I managed to catch two waves that ran perfectly, making it all worthwhile. Sure, it was freezing, and the conditions were less than ideal, but moments like those remind me why I keep coming back. 🌊🤣🥶

It’s not every day you see one of these guys washed up on the beach. As a long-time Dunedin surfer, the thought of them is always there in the back of your mind, especially after hearing the stories of attacks back in the ’60s at St Clair. There’s a tension between the thrill of catching a wave and that underlying awareness of what might be lurking beneath the surface. For locals, it’s almost a rite of passage—to respect the ocean, but also to share a healthy wariness for the creatures that call it home.
Any expert out there that know what type of shark this is ??

Whilst shooting the surfing action this morning at Blackhead, there was a big male Sea lion hunting out 2 female sea lions around the contest site and up into the bushes, I've got to say the females can run bloody fast when the big fella is chasing them that's for sure!

"Some unusual surfing shots from this afternoon at St Clair Beach. A big crew from the North Island, along with a few local lads, braved the cold and tackled big waves on their powered pole skis, pulling off some extreme airs out from the poles."

"One of the strongest Aurora storms in 20 years as viewed through the windows and roof of Cargill's Castle on October 11, 2024. I wonder what the Cargill family thought when they saw the dancing lights along the southern coastline and over the castle during big storms like the 1882 & 1903 events.
