🎭 MEET THE DIRECTOR — THOMAS MAKINSON 🎭

A finalist for Best Director at the 2023 Dunedin Theatre Awards, Thomas Makinson has been a creative force in Ōtepoti’s theatre scene for over a decade. A seasoned Shakespearean performer (he’s acted in over a quarter of the Bard’s plays!), Thomas returns to the Globe to direct his second — and certainly boldest — Shakespeare production yet.

Thomas sets his Taming of the Shrew in a 90s world of neon, pop, and slapstick farce. In doing so, he hopes to embraces the play’s absurdity while unflinchingly exploring its darker, more uncomfortable truths.

We love a Shakespeare that makes us think... and laugh, and with a gender-flipped Petruchio (now Petruchia), wild physical comedy, and some big themes to wrestle with, Thomas invites you to do both. He’s especially keen to see how audiences respond to his creative spin.
