At yesterday’s AGM the club was very proud to induct Blair Bezett as a Life Member.
(Left in photo below being presented badge by President Darren Bezett)

Blair was a Junior from 1976 – 1982 which included 3 seasons as “Ball Boy” to the Premier Team.
Seniors throughout the 1990’s Playing close to 100 premier games (97)
2004 – coming out of retirement to help our Premier 2 team when we dropped out of the Premier grade

Committee Member for the last decade and still on the committee.
Chairman 2017-2022.
Council of Clubs representative for Green Island for those 6 years also.

Blair has been instrumental in progressing this club forward.
Was first asked to come onto the Committee in 2013 to assist with re-structuring the Committee. He very quickly made significant changes to the committee, introducing new members, and moving others into specific roles.
Under his stewardship of 6 years, it was fundamental in getting the club back to where it has progressed to now off the field.
Projects sorted under his reign as chairman have included, full kitchen upgrade, addition of a player’s gym, heating upgrade to clubrooms, toilet upgrade, construction of scrum room, addition of outdoor courtyard and door access and a big driver behind getting sponsors back through the door. Blairs ability to raise funds for various projects has been quite remarkable at times. The culmination of these projects has been for the betterment of the club’s future and financial stability.

Blair has also been very instrumental in dealing with the Otago Rugby Union whilst serving as our rep on The Council of Clubs – advocating strongly for not only Green Island but club rugby in Dunedin in general for a period of 6 years.

He also went about strengthening and reinforcing the relationship between the senior and junior committee’s which for Dunedin Club rugby sets the example that all clubs should follow – the strength of this is seen in playing numbers and support we receive as a senior club from the Juniors and their parents.

Blair continues to be involved in senior club recruitment being a huge advocate for all teams which will ensure the playing strength of the club continues to grow.

In summing up his passion and commitment to the Green Island Rugby Football Club cannot be understated. This Life membership is very well deserved.

At yesterday’s AGM the club posthumously awarded the late Raymond Byrne as a Life Member.
Ray got involved with the club in the 1960’s and served over 30 years on both the senior and junior committees.
Managing various teams throughout the years. Very good manager, always looking after teams. One of the first managers to hang the gear on hooks.
Held most office bearing positions including President in 1995-1996.
He was the main driving force in getting Steve Martin to coach our Premiers in 2005
which was one of the main reasons we had a team that year, otherwise we might not have been in premiers and had to go through a promotion process.
Ray unfortunately died before that season.

Last week, we welcomed Super Rugby NZ’s newest players ahead of the 2024 season kicking off. Players were introduced to the professional rugby environment at our Wellington office and left with a toolkit of resources to help them succeed on and off the field! 🏉

Massive congratulations to GI player Charlotte Va'afusuaga who has been selected to attend the New Zealand Under 20 women’s rugby development camps.
Introduced to identify and develop young players with the potential to wear the black jersey, two camps will bring together young talent from Northland through to Southland.
The camps later this month will be led by leading coaches, with Black Ferns and Sky Super Rugby Aupiki coaches in attendance.
