Kicking off the Dunedin Arts Festival 2025, we have nationally acclaimed dancer and choreographer, Jeremy Beck returning to Dunedin to premiere his highly anticipated new work ‘Commentary Of Dreaming’ at the The Regent Theatre, proudly sponsored by BB&S.
Inspired by the astrological concept of Saturn Returns, it meditates on subconscious rites of passage and our conscious perception of ageing, culminating in a bittersweet ode to a youth spent in Ōtepoti.

Six of Aotearoa’s finest contemporary dancers will take the stage alongside 15 non-dance-trained friends. This performance has been three years in the making and will be an evening to remember.

Beck’s acclaimed choreographic style and stunning scenography is enriched by a new sound score from sonic artist Hominid, Benny Jennings and lighting design by Marty Roberts

Only two weeks until the opening night of this incredible live performance ‘The Night Has A Thousand Eyes’ - a stunning pre-Festival taster of what’s to come in March/April.

An elegant exploration by two of New Zealand's most celebrated dance luminaries, Michael Parmenter and Lucy-Margaux Marinkovich.

Paris-based concert pianist Jeffrey Grice and lighting designer Martyn Roberts bring to life acclaimed composer Lucien Johnson's luxurious and melancholic nocturnes as the ensemble explores the intimacy, sensuality and quietness of the darkest hours of the night.

Next on The Night Has A Thousand Eyes creative team is Paris based pianist Jeffrey Grice.

Born in Christchurch, New Zealand, he attended Sacred Heart College in Glen Innes, counting among his classmates the future founding members of NZ's iconic rock band Split Enz.

With a Queen Elizabeth Arts Council grant and a French Government scholarship, Grice left New Zealand in October 1976 to further his piano studies in Paris with Yvonne Loriod, obtaining the Licence de Concert at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Musique in 1978 in the class of Germaine Mounier.

Resident in France for over forty years and a French citizen since 2005, a former laureate of the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation, the Cziffra Foundation and the Sophia-Antipolis Foundation, Jeffrey Grice performs regularly throughout Europe and abroad as a soloist, chamber musician and vocal accompanist.

In 1984, he was awarded the Prix de l'Académie du disque français for his recording Le Tombeau de Ronsard with baritone Jacques Herbillon. In 1999, he was made an "Officier dans l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres" by the French government for services in the field of music.

He has premiered contemporary works by composers from New Zealand, Jenny McLeod (seven Tone Clock Pieces, in 1988), Lucien Johnson (To the sea, in 2007, Addis Nocturnes, in 2017) Nigel Keay (the dancer leads the procession, in 2007), France (Kirill Zaborov and David Chaillou), and Japan (Karen Tanaka).

Arts Festival Dunedin

Next Festival 2020

Otago Festival of the Arts Trust was established in 1999 to present a biennial arts festival in Dunedin. There are two simple 'catch phrases' which encapsulate what this Festival is all about - "celebrating the excellent and the extraordinary" "a boutique festival in a boutique city."

Since the inaugural Festival in 2000 the Festival has fostered these simple policies. "Bigger is not necessarily better; developing a sustainable, manageable and exciting event is paramount" says founding Director Nicholas McBryde. "Dunedin is a city of 120,000 citizens - we need to primarily cater for this catchment by offering as much as our money can buy. And to date, having now produced nine Festivals we are very proud to have always offered a fabulous arts event to our region." The most recent celebration in October 2016 - enjoyed more sold out shows and standing ovations than ever before. Arts Festival Dunedin will present the tenth edition 21 - 30 September 2018.

The Festival has as its corporate brand a "silk" created by the Victorian artist, designer, typographer and manufacturer William Morris. This has served the Festival well - it is elegant, can be used in various permutations and fits well with the historic Victorian and Edwardian architecture of Dunedin - the Edinburgh of the South.
