Smoke alarms are a crucial safety measure that can help save lives during a fire emergency. However, for individuals with hearing impairments, traditional smoke alarms may not be effective in alerting them of the danger.

According to the New Zealand Fire Service, over 80% of all fire deaths occur in residential buildings. Furthermore, the majority of these deaths occur during the night when people are asleep. For those who are deaf or hard of hearing, traditional smoke alarms that rely on sound alone may not be enough to alert them to the danger.

That's why it is crucial for individuals with hearing impairments to have access to smoke alarms that use both sound and visual signals. Visual smoke alarms use bright strobe lights to alert people to the presence of smoke.

In New Zealand, the Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) https://www.fireandemergency.nz/home-fire-safety/smoke-alarms-and-other-safety-devices/specialised-safety-equipment-and-service/ provides visual smoke alarms to those with hearing impairments. To access these alarms, individuals must contact FENZ and provide proof of their hearing impairment. Once approved, FENZ will install the alarm.

It is worth noting that visual smoke alarms are not just essential for those with hearing impairments. They are also beneficial for anyone who may have difficulty hearing traditional smoke alarms, such as the elderly or those who sleep heavily. The New Zealand Building Code now requires all new residential buildings to have visual smoke alarms installed.
