Did you know that a hand full of NZ Wool Mulch improves soil porosity and optimum root growth in your pot plants?
Also 500g is enough to mix in with 10kg of potting mix.
These pellets are made from 100% untreated NZ sheep wool and will help feed, protect, enrich and grow your plants. (Repost)

Visiting Cork and the English Market I happened upon these beautiful bunches of wild flowers for sale. I know the weather has been completely rubbish back home but the hedgerows are full of all the things we love about summer and can’t wait for our local flower farms to provide all the beautiful treats.

A little bit of colour to brighten these winter days.
Tulips whilst fragile in nature are truly magical.
Take a moment to admire the palette of colours around the petal edge and deep into the stamen as the petals open wide.
Give the gift of a simple bunch of tulips to bring cheer to their day

I’m off!! (With Mr Flower Crate in tow)✈️🇮🇪
Headed for the Emerald Isles to see our son
Needless to say we haven’t seen him since the C shook the world.
Excitement doesn’t come close to what we’re feeling & emotional overwhelment at the thought of that first hug
I leave the shop in the very capable hands of Grace, Thomas, Phoebe & Sarah who will continue to create bouquets and tend plants and wrap your gifts.
They will be a pair of hands down so please show patience and kindness as always.

Winter always seems to be a time that our trees and gardens go into a dormancy building themselves for the coming season. Flower choices decrease and we miss the variety summer brings - and then like a ray of sunshine the orchids appear, bringing rich tones and beauty in every flower.

The Flower Crate will be closed tomorrow as we celebrate Matariki.
Each midwinter as the Pleiades star cluster known as Matariki magically rises in our night sky it heralds the start of a New Year.

Matariki is a celebration where everyone can come together and reflect on the year that has passed. It’s also a time to celebrate the present, and plan for the future - and let us pause to think of those who are not with us.
The perfect way to celebrate Matariki is to come together with friends, family and whānau and share a mid-winter feast.

The Wrap
When you receive your bouquet or carrier from The Flower Crate the stems will be wet wrapped and protected. This stops the flowers from undergoing stress if the ends were to be left open.
Everything we use here can go straight into your compost bin or be recycled.
The Carrier or Kraft wrap we use are papers and card that have no plastic in them and are undyed.
The bag is compostable.
The cloth wrap can be used as a kitchen cloth and is made of bamboo fibre.
The sachet containing flower food is also compostable.
Our ribbons are reusable for gifting and we are working on a cotton and silk botanically dyed range.

Starting with our flowers and where they come from.
ALL our flowers and foliage come from New Zealand.
We are fortunate to have several large local growers here in the Waikato that we deal with directly, then we also have a wonderful community of small flower farmers that provide us with a fabulous variation of locally grown flowers.
Over the winter months these local growers are unable to supply us with flowers but it doesn’t mean they are resting on their laurels - they are busier than ever rebuilding their beds, mulching, sowing and starting the process over again. They too are always looking at ways to make their farms more sustainable and better producers- but they are at the mercy of the weather.
The commercial growers are also affected by the weather even though their crops are under cover, while crops can be re****ed or advanced with unseasonable weather patterns.

This week I am going to try and focus on who we are and the sustainable path we choose to take with all of our flowers and arrangements.
Sustainable floristry has been an important stand for me from the start of my journey at The Flower Crate.
It takes time and dedication because unfortunately the flower world is not as naturally driven as you are lead to believe.
There are some amazing ambassadors out there under the Sustainable Floristry Network who are trying to educate both florists and customers.
Our flowers are grown in New Zealand, we are plastic and floral foam free, our whole process can be composted, recycled or reused.
We are not perfect but we strive continually to improve our systems.
