We are saddened to hear about the passing of Rowena Jackson MBE last week, Southland’s most renowned dancer.

Rowena played a pivotal role in shaping the lives and careers of many young dancers over the decades and made significant contributions to the arts community, both locally and nationally.

Her passion, dedication, and vision have left an enduring mark, inspiring countless individuals to pursue their dreams in dance and beyond.

As many of you will know, in 2018 we honoured Rowena by renaming our upstairs rehearsal room to the Rowena Jackson Rehearsal Room – a space that will continue to inspire new talent, just as she did 🩰

Our thoughts are with Rowena's family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched throughout her extraordinary journey.

Today, we celebrate Garnie’s 50-year journey with the Civic Theatre.

From starting as an electrical apprentice in 1974 to becoming our go-to theatre tech for half a century, Garnie has seen it all.

He recalls how the theatre went from using old h**p ropes when he started to being one of the most cherished venues in the country after the 2004 upgrade. His favourite moment? Helping save the theatre in 1982 by rewiring the whole thing, ensuring its survival.

Over the years, he’s witnessed a remarkable evolution in technology. When he started, lighting involved old lamp fittings with colour gels to achieve the desired stage effect. Now, most lights are LED, allowing any colour to be dialled up instantly.

Garnie met countless stars in his time like Windsor Davies, Johnny Farnham, The Irish Rovers and John Inman, but his favourite memory is the first Les Misérables performance in 1994 - reflecting his deep love for the arts.

As he looks forward to retirement, filled with fishing, white baiting and hunting, we thank Garnie for his unwavering dedication and passion to The Civic Theatre and wider arts community.
