I’m backing Steve in this by-election. Why? Because his is a voice worth listening to. He spends his day job listening to his community. He’s on the pulse and he’s not afraid of asking the questions that need to be asked.

He’s one of the most positive humans I know when talking about our city and our region. (And honestly we don’t need more negativity). He has always supported creativity in our city, and his integrity is solid.

By-elections can be tricksy. Please vote. And give Steve Broad for ICC a like and a share in the meantime to get momentum going.

Congratulations to the incoming ILT board. A big three years ahead.

To the 5,254 humans who voted for me, thank you. Just 40 short of knocking out my good friend Sheree Carey - ILT Candidate and that would have been a bit bitter sweet. I know she’ll get s**t done, and do it for the good of our city. I count that as a win. Also, now I can hit her up for wines at 360.

It was a privilege to be part of this meeting this morning with Anna Nielson, the originator of Wellington on a Plate, key instigator of Le Cordon Bleu in Wellington and generally all things foodie along with some epic Southland instigators I’m working with who are keen to push Southland kai. Campaigning this year is a family affair.

Archer and I are off delivering flyers in this direction. My sister and niece are off in another. Mum, her husband, a bunch of supporters and amazing friends are spanning across the city. (Thank you!!)

If you didn’t know, Trish Boyle is my mum and she’s standing for council.

Mum has experience in governance being Chair of Community Trust South for four years.
She has a proven record in leadership both in education through her role as principal atSt John's Girls' School and as chair of Rotary International’s leadership committee (plus all manner of President/district governor/other bits in Rotary Club of Invercargill North) AND she’s an amazing Nana. Which will only be called upon if the council act like children I guess.

Sure, I’m biased but I’m voting Trish Boyle. And for me.

It’s no coincidence that you can find my election signs in, or next to, some of the coolest small businesses in town. I am and have always been a small business champion.

(Come and find me at Fat Bastard Pies, The Urban Kitchen, next to The Batch Cafe, and squished in between Black S**g Boutique Café, Mint Roastery and Louie's Restaurant & Bar).

Small businesses give our town personality and life. They can teach big business a bit about adaptability and creativity, and always have an incredible human or humans at the helm. Thank you James, Dani, Kate, Gareth, Sylvie, Dion and Marce.

The dichotomy of being on, and running for the Licensing Trust while also being a cheerleader for the little guy (and business coach at Coin South) is not lost on me. I do and will continue to make sure the ILT board consider our business community and our customers (you) while making decisions - the tagline is “For our Community,” after all.

Just like you get to vote for who looks after your rates and rubbish on council, you also get to vote for who you want to be the Kaitiaki of hospitality and bars in Invercargill by voting 6 people on the Licencing Trust.

Vote for a voice that’s a little less prohibitiony, and a little more vibrant-city-life.

Last year in the by-election I stood for three things. #1 was to push for more local food on local ILT menus: to support and encourage small food businesses. It may be a small start, but I'm proud to see Mint Roastery and Farm Fresh South in The Langlands hotel and Brew'd Cafe.

Standing for re-election on the ILT board has been an interesting decision. With a five month old, perspectives change, I’ve started seeing the world a little differently. I’ve asked myself if giving up my time with him for my community is something I want to do. And while I had decided yes, last night solidified that for me.

I had the opportunity to speak at the National Council of Women Southland’s Meet the Candidates event last night.

And the most inspiring part of the evening was watching my mother, Trish Boyle, stand and talk for what she believes in, what she is going to do in our community, and why it is important to her.

If my son could ever be as proud of me as I was of her last night, I’ll know I’ll have done something right. In my mothers words, and apologies for stealing from your campaign, Mum, “I believe to live in the society that you want, you have to help build it.”

So I’m in 100%. And hopefully you will all help me get there.

A huge thank you to Bryan and his team at The Langlands for our trial night last night.

I thought it’d be weird staying in a hotel in our hometown, but I felt a world away from Invercargill. (Just happened to know all the guests). Plus I scored an extra Mint Roastery coffee to go this morning.

I had the privilege this morning of being part of the group honouring ILT Chair, Alan Dennis for his incredible community service over the years.

Alan is not standing again in the ILT election this October, so in recognition of his get-s**t-done attitude, the ILT stand at the stadium is now named after him. (And a floor sweeper, is now named Big Al).

“You can get a lot done when you don’t care who takes the credit,” he said today. And Alan has certainly been a part of many teams who have achieved a lot in this city.

Alan leaves a legacy of huge community involvement across education, racing, sports and art.

A huge thank you to Pat, his wife, who has clearly been his rock throughout it all.
