So proud of the Auaha/Arinex NZ team who wrapped up another event this week.

All events come with their challenges and not everything goes to plan, but it’s the experience of those in attendance that is always the focus.

We are grateful for everyone who stopped by the registration desk and thanked us for a well run event that they throughly enjoyed. It’s those comments that seem so passing but mean the world to a team who have spent months bringing it all together.

Heading into the weekend tired but ever so grateful to our clients who trust us with their events.

Attention all event organisers! Get ready to be surprised once again because the face of event fatigue in 2023 has evolved yet again! It's a whole new ball game, and we are not talking about dodgeball, folks. 😅

Gone are the days of post-event crashes and endless Zoom calls (thank goodness!). Instead, event fatigue has taken on a new form that's both surprising and challenging. So, what is it exactly, you ask?

Well, we won't keep you in suspense any longer.

But let’s be honest…organising events in 2023 comes with its own set of challenges. And although it no longer means navigating lockdowns, event organiser fatigue is taking its toll.

IMAGINE…

You’re hosting a virtual event. Similarly to an in-person event, delegates network in a free-flow virtual kind of way. Attendees walk around in a customised virtual space. Cameras are on and you can strike up a conversation with anybody who is in your proximity.

Sounds very Sci-Fi?

Not anymore!

Virtual networking has come a very long way. And while it won’t replace an in-person event in the number one spot, it’s doing a mighty good job at scratching our networking itch while we need to continue to keep things safe!

Just how good?

I think our feedback from both hosts and delegates is a sign you may need to catch up on the latest innovation in virtual networking during events!

AWESOME VIRTUAL NETWORKING EXPERIENCE!

This is a review for one of our recent virtual events! 😲

Networking in a virtual world may have been a frustrating pain-point in the past 2 years. And admittedly, it won’t replace the real-life affair. But for now… THINGS HAVE COME A LONG WAY!

Virtual and hybrid events are here to stay, and virtual networking opportunities can’t be an afterthought. (Networking is a big part of the business event experience!) So with some gizmo’s and insights borrowed from the gaming world, things have become a lot more exciting!

Just how exciting?

I think we owe you a little insight into what we can do these days! 👇

‘Ka mua, ka muri’

If ever there was a more appropriate time to use this Maori proverb.

I love this proverb and I try to remind myself of it when the events of the last few years rattle me.

It paints a great image of a person walking backwards into the future. Eyes on the past, but with no clear vision of what the future will bring. What it says is that the past gives us clues, but the road ahead is unclear. The only certainty is change.

I guess this sums up all we need to know for what business events trends we can expect for 2022: We don’t really have a clue what 2022 will bring. Your guess is as good as mine. And in the end, we all may be proven wrong.

Because of that, it makes sense to plan for change and allow for flexibility.

So how does that translate into what business events will bring for Aotearoa in the upcoming year?

Let me take you to the blog and explain. www.auaha.co.nz/business-event-trends-for-2022/

The Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna O Waiwhetu has a painting called ‘Tomorrow will be the same but not as this is’. It was painted by Colin McCahon in the late 50s.

The man had a moment. I guess he had some vivid memories of the turbulence during the post-war years.

For us in 2022, turbulence is rife too. (Understatement of the year!) Going out and about, exploring new horizons, many things are largely off the table for the next few weeks. But NOT visiting art galleries, musing at paintings like this one and its message.

…OR enjoying business events!

In 2022, business events may be ‘same same, but different’ to what they were last year, but what does that even mean? What can we really expect? Do we know? 🤔

We take a good stab at answering that question for you in our new blog! (👇

And so we find ourselves in 2022.

If anybody would have described our current world a mere two years ago, few people would have thought it possible.

It’s hard on people. It’s hard on businesses. Especially Events.

But here’s the thing. WE HAVE A CHOICE.

We’ve all heard about the fight-or-flight response. Some add a third: Freeze.

But maybe, just maybe…

When things get rocky; especially when things get rocky, it’s also an option to show up with a plan. Flexible, but nevertheless a plan. And when you say plan, you say goals.

Guess what… the Auaha Squad has been on to it!

You can read all about our plan (and our goals) here. 👇

And so the uncertain times found their way into 2022.

But that doesn’t deter the Auaha Squad!

Setting goals in uncertain times may feel like there’s no point, but we tend to disagree.

How about…

· Putting the focus on what you can control, rather than on what you can’t.
· In some cases, short-term goals may be more achievable right now.
· Expecting disruption… and planning for it.
· Learning some new skills that will help you achieve goals in the longer term. Time well spent, I say.

These and some other ideas were tossed around by the Auaha squad.

Oh, and we thought about a theme song for the year too…

All of New Zealand will move to Red at 11.59pm tonight, 23 January, in order to slow down and manage the spread of Omicron in the community.

Red is not lockdown. At Red businesses stay open and you can do most of the things that you normally do, if you are vaccinated. There are no regional boundaries at Red, and you can shop normally as all supermarkets and retail remain open.

🔴 Omicron case update

Nine COVID-19 cases reported yesterday in the Nelson/Marlborough region have now been confirmed as the Omicron variant, and a further case from the same household was confirmed late yesterday.

These cases flew to Auckland on 13 January to attend a wedding and other events. Initial estimates suggest there were well over 100 people at these events.

This cluster has already led to an additional infection of a fully vaccinated flight attendant who picked it up on flight 5083 on January 16th from Auckland to Nelson that the family was on.

That flight attendant has worked four additional flights while infectious. These flights are:

Flight NZ 5083 from Auckland to Nelson at 5.20 pm on 16 January
Flight NZ 5080 from Nelson to Auckland at 4 pm on 19 January
Flight NZ 5077 from Auckland to Nelson at 2pm on 19 January
Flight NZ 5049 from Auckland to New Plymouth at 7.50 pm on 19 January
Flight NZ 5042 from New Plymouth to Auckland at 1.50 pm on 20 January

We don’t yet have a clear lead on the index case that links this family to the border, as we have with our other Omicron cases to date. That means Omicron is circulating in Auckland and possibly the Nelson Marlborough region if not elsewhere.

As we have seen elsewhere in the world Omicron is significantly more infectious and we will see far more cases than we have in the two years of the pandemic to date.

🔴 Boosters

The evidence from overseas is that boosters significantly reduce the likelihood of getting sick and needing to go to hospital, and also helps to reduce the transmission of the virus. Around 56% of those eligible for a booster have already had one, if you’re eligible now – go to BookMyVaccine.nz or find a walk-in vaccination clinic at https://www.healthpoint.co.nz/covid-19-vaccination/?options=walk-in

Here’s what you can do – get boosted, wear a mask in indoor settings and when out and about and reduce contact with others.

While we will now experience more cases of Covid-19 than we ever have before, most people will be able to recover at home.

Anyone with symptoms should isolate immediately and call Healthline (0800 358 5453) or your doctor to arrange a test. If you test positive, you will need to isolate for 14 days and your close contacts will need to isolate for at least 10 days.

Help and support, including financial support, will be available for people who are isolating. More information is available here: www.workandincome.govt.nz/covid-19/

We’ll share more information around life at Red in our next update.

Be calm, be kind, get boosted.

A lot has changed in the last couple of years.

Saying that organising an event in 2022 looks a bit different from what it did just a mere 2 years ago is an understatement.

Of course, the purpose and the objectives of our events haven’t changed. But the content has. So does the way we communicate and connect.

And while we’re busy re-inventing events, we also need to change the thoughts and behaviours of our participants. (Now there’s a challenge!)

The bottom-line is that some serious outside the square thinking about events is on the table!

But that doesn’t faze us! We’re ready to dive in headfirst and have some serious fun along the way. Are you? www.auaha.co.nz/events-in-2022/

I’m here to give you a kick up the bum.

Of course, that would be in the kindest possible (tap-tap) way.

But really…?

How is it that after all the storms we sailed in the last 2 years, we still think we need to organise events like it was 1999?
Why do we think virtual and hybrid events by default are …*whisper* boring?
And why aren’t we brave enough to face the New head on?

NEWSFLASH!

We are ready if you are!

You don’t have to automatically cancel all your conference events! Yes, we can all see that it may be a bit of time before we’re back to booking venues and calling in the caterers. But those things were NEVER the backbone of your event.

As a business, you hosted events in order to bring a team or community together collectively. You wanted to honor your associates and clients. To share new information and keep everyone up to date on industry best practices. Your event was about connection, community, and collaboration and it still can be. www.auaha.co.nz/ace-event-app/

When even top world leaders love a good virtual conference, you know they are here to stay.

But how do you organise a virtual event that is not the epitome of boredom? A weak surrogate to your pervious in-person events? Are they even worth the cost and the effort?

The answer is a full-hearted YES.

Virtual events can be a rocking success on all levels.

But there is a massive caveat: you can’t approach virtual events in the same way you did your in-person events. They need a massive re-think. Which, of course… we have done for you.

Here are 6 tips to nail your next virtual event to get you on your way. www.auaha.co.nz/tips-for-virtual-events/

Changes to our international border restrictions will make travelling to New Zealand easier. Our high levels of vaccination allow greater flexibility at the border, but we still need to take a cautious approach.

➡From 11.59pm Sunday 16 January 2022, fully vaccinated New Zealanders and other eligible travellers can travel to New Zealand from Australia without staying in MIQ.
➡From 11.59pm Sunday 13 February 2022, fully vaccinated New Zealanders and other eligible travellers can travel to New Zealand from all other countries.
➡From 30 April, 2022, all fully vaccinated individuals will be able to travel to New Zealand, with the re-opening staged over time.
➡The Very High-Risk classification for Indonesia, Fiji, India, Pakistan and Brazil is to be removed in early December 2021 and travellers from these countries will be able to enter New Zealand on the same basis as travellers from most other countries.

All travellers will still need a negative pre-departure test, proof of being fully vaccinated, a passenger travel declaration about their travel history, a day 0/1 test on arrival, a requirement to self-isolate for 7 days, and a final negative test before entering the community.

More information about how self-isolation will work will be released next month.

You can read more about travel to New Zealand on our website here: https://covid19.govt.nz/travel/international-travel-and-transit/travel-to-new-zealand/

What is a hybrid event?

A hybrid event lives in the overlap zone between an in-person event and a virtual event.

This is a Hybrid events definition I found.

‘A hybrid event is a mix of live and virtual events. You take your in-person event, complete with audience, content, etc. and you add a virtual component to it so your audience can participate from anywhere.’

While this is not wrong, it’s also not quite right. See, hybrid events are an entire spectrum, and it can be what you want it to be as long as it has an in-person and a virtual component. There really is no one-size fits all.
