This year’s Smoke @ The Lake BBQ comp at Ellesmere A&P show was epic!

With double the teams from last year, and a new addition of the SCA steak and Ancillary cook off as well, teams from local, to all over New Zealand were on fire, providing some sensational meat and honey dishes that had the taste buds drooling!

The weather was superb allowing the competitors ideal conditions to show off their phenomenal bbq and smoking skills.

Troy Billbrough from “Rendered” came away with the overall Grand Champion prize with Morgan and Mandy Brunswick of “Out The Grate” snapping up Reserve Grand Champion!

Thanks to all our amazing and humble competitors and judges for their support and a Massive Shoutout to Scott Carnochan of Smokey Fish Bar-Bee-Q for his support and hard work helping our BBQ comp committee plan and run this event. Without his input it would not be the event it is becoming!

Huge appreciation to all our sponsors including Swift Ribs NZ, Taylormade Builders, and BBQs Direct for their generous contributions, without them this competition wouldn’t be possible.

Stay tuned and Watch this space for next year’s Smoke @ The Lake competition! We are expecting bigger and better things!

Even though the Young Farmers were tied up elsewhere this year we managed to get through our heats, semi and finals. Thanks to all those that pitched in to make it a great day. Below are our finalists.

Junior - 1st Tye Miekle, 2nd Sam Storey, 3rd Levi Bedford (absent) and 4th Holly Crombie (absent).

Intermediate - 1st Trae Karaka, 2nd Sarm McCone and 3rd Ella Caves (absent).

Senior - 1st John Cherrington, 2nd James Wilson, 3rd Aaron Webster and 4th Liam Norrie.

Open - 1st Justin Meikle, 2nd Ant Frew, 3rd Hugh de Lacy and 4th Willie McSkimming.

And we also had the speed shear and with a time of 28 seconds Thomas Lambert was the winner.

A great day was had at the shearing with a good turnout of competitors. And for the first time in a few years the Colin King Shield was up for grabs between North Otago and Notth Canterbury and after a close fought battle North Otago took the honours.
