What a beautiful story
HIS STORY 👨🍳 HISTORY.
We’d like you to meet Darren Shead. We met Darren just over 19 years ago when we purchased TASTE. He came with the business! His story forms part of our history.
We were delighted to retain Darren in his existing role of Head Chef when we opened. He agreed to stay on with us for 6 months, helping get things kick started.
We don’t know if he remembers that opening night, but we certainly do. 60 people showed up for dinner. That came as a shock to us & we feel sure it did to the kitchen team as well - although they didn’t show it - too much!!
When Darren left us, he travelled overseas. There he landed some exciting catering roles in the music industry. Time now to name drop. He toured with such big names as Norah Jones, Bryan Ferry & Lady Gaga - to name a few - as their personal chef while on concert tours. Wow.
When he returned to New Zealand, he took on the massive job as opening Head Chef at Charley Noble, then owned by Paul Hoather. Darren had previously worked for Paul at The White House. After that was up & running, he did it all again at Park Kitchen in Miramar. Seems he likes an opening!
There he got to know people associated with the film industry & ended up working for a catering firm who specialised in film location catering. He worked on big name films like The Hobbit & Avatar.
While this all sounds dead glamorous, in reality it’s bloody hard, demanding work, with long hours, sometimes in difficult out-of-the-way places.
Darren has always kept in touch with us & we were dead chuffed when he rang recently to book a special family dinner to celebrate his parents 50th wedding anniversary at TASTE.
It was then that he told us he had been lured back to Charley Noble & their associated Food Lab catering & prep kitchen.
Purely by chance, we had arranged to dine there with friends the following week. When we arrived there, we were well impressed to see typed along the side of their menu, not “Darren Shead - Head Chef”, but “Darren Shead - Executive Chef”. In true Darren fashion, he hadn’t mentioned that he’d scored the top job at this highly regarded, constantly busy restaurant.
Well done that man! We always knew you’d go far. We’re proud to have you as a part of our history.
Gary & David @ TASTE.
