Today marks an important and milestone moment for the Rainbow community in Aotearoa - from today, June 15, 2023, people can self-identify and amend the s*x on their New Zealand birth certificate, a process that is essential to transgender, inters*x, non binary and takatāpui people.

From :
“This self-identification process will replace the Family Court process for amending s*x on birth certificates based on how a person identifies, rather than eligibility criteria such as medical treatment (which is the current requirement where permanent medical changes are required). Note, there are currently options for Passports and Driver licenses in NZ outside this process.
Importantly too, s*x and gender markers other than male and female will now be available The additional s*x and gender markers will be:
‘a non-binary gender’; and
‘another gender’.”

This is an amazing step forward for the Rainbow Community, and one that I’m proud to share, a side of history I’m proud to be on.

Last year I was approached by someone from Australia who chose Aotearoa for their elopement because of the steps we were actively taking in the Rainbow community. They didn’t want ‘M’ or ‘F’ as their s*x markers on their marriage licence as they identify as non binary, so I worked with them and the Births, Deaths and Marriages team to ensure that this could happen. While the process wasn’t without its flaws, we were able to amend the s*x marker on the licence and they were happily married to the love of their life, in a safe and happy space.

So if you’re non binary or another gender and want this reflected on your marriage documentation, please let me know because I know we can make it happen.
