Stanley Brook Hall - Renovation and upgrade meeting

Today we had a quick meeting to talk about the future of the hall and cover some suggestions on what is needed to maintain and upgrade the site. Several ideas have been put forward and I will list these below. We will gain quotes for these projects and put them forward to the TDC for consideration. TDC have indicated that there is funding available which we can apply for and they would like to see the building well presented and used.

We will also look at having a working bee in either Jan or Feb to replace some boards and generally tidy up the section.

Drainage - is one of the first issues to sort and Baden is going to touch base with Andrew Burnett re getting the digger in to do trenching for the new pipes and removing dirt from around the kitchen area as this is touching the weather boards causing problems
Once this is done we can then make the new ramp for the front part which will likely be made out of concrete.

Electrical - Hadyn is looking into costing for new lighting in both the main hall and kitchen as well as a heat pump which could be a great help on the cold winter nights or middle of summer.

Re roofing - Many parts of the roof are lifting and the iron is far from new. We are going to look at quotes for redoing whole or part of the building. In looking at the kitchen we noticed a substantial bulge in the wall and from what we can see this might be the result of the centre roof truss/beam departing from its place above the sink wall. This will need to be inspected and fixed before any roofing can commence.

Window repair - Currently we are supporting local wildlife by allowing birds to enter through broken windows. Ian S has volunteered to help replace this and we will connect in the next few weeks to sort out a time to make this happen, Ian has also found us some good quality moss remover and we will deal with the outside of the building, thanks Ian.

Source boards - Tim to contact a local sawmill to see if we can find some replacement weather boards the same profile as the existing ones as some are rotten.

Historic Information sign - Hadyn is touching base with Gazza to get pricing for a new printing and fitting as the old one has seen better days.

Proper oven - For the kitchen as there is currently no way to cook or prepare food.

DOC toilet for the small hall - Currently we have a long drop in poor condition. Discussion was had around the idea of getting a proper DOC long drop for the public at the other site.
I will email them to see if this is possible.

Shade sail - A covered area, four posts, a shade sail and later an elevated deck with seating. The idea behind this was for people either at the venue or travellers going past to have a sheltered area to park up and rest.

Other ideas for next year included - Sanding and re doing the floor, looking at a second flush toilet, additions or modifications to the kitchen, footpath around the side and back of the building to be made. We also would like to get a large water tank and make the hall water supply independent of local farms which would include a filtration system for water.

Again thank you to those who attended, your thoughts and help is much appreciated. Over time we would like to grow the community input and use of this hall. We welcome constructive suggestions and resources to do this.

People present included

Baden Barker
Hamish Barker
James Bint
Susan Creedy
Tina Touks
Ian and Charlene Storrar
Tim Upson
Hadyn Morgan

Hi everyone, next year in Feb/March we will be having an AGM with the TDC on site to talk about a future plan for the hall.
In discussion with them we have good access to funds for renovation and development of our Stanley Brook hall.

I would like to get those interested in the hall's future together for a look around the site where we identify some of the repairs needed and talk about some concepts for development or renewal of structure or amenities.

Some of the idea's floated already include

New kitchen including a proper stove
Replacement of rotten whether boards and paint
New lighting inside
A deck out the side of the building with shade sail/seating
Ramps into the entrance
Drainage

I know there is no such thing as a perfect time to do this catch up and some will not be able to make it however after talking with Baden we have gone for in next Sat morning which is the 17th at 9am

For any of you that cannot make it but have ideas to contribute send them to me via facebook or call on 021 179 7499 and I will share these with the group for you.

Lastly please help by calling or texting our non facebook savy community members to give them a heads up. Feel free to share this post as I can only tag certain people in this for some weird reason.

Thanks and see you there

Tim
