Mana Little Theatre is a small but vibrant boutique community theatre in Plimmerton, Porirua, New Zealand. We usually put on four shows per year, each having a two-week run, and also hold occasional musical events. Meet Dame Claude, the old family retainer, played by Victoria Wilks.

´What would this family do without me? I’ve been here for them through it all - from wiping Cleante’s bottom as a baby through to seeing Elise about to get married. I don’t know what they would do without me.

And I don’t do it for the money, no I’m more like a wife and mother to them, than a housekeeper. I think Harpagon has a sweet spot for me. Maybe he will leave me some money when he passes.

If you want to know anything about this family, you really should just ask me- I get to hear and know everything that goes on in this household.´

Everyone says Mariane is perfect but all she wants to do is abide by her mother’s wishes! Mariane is relying on matchmaker Frosine to help her choose between two suitors - Harpagon, her mother’s choice, or Cléante, her lisping lover from afar.

Monsieur Ansleme’s relationship with money could not be any more different Harpagon’s – money is for enjoying and spending, particularly in the pursuit of happiness, family and love. Harpagon and his family are only too willing to take advantage of his generosity!

For Maitre Simon business is money; and money is business. He will happily put anyone together with someone else’s money as long as he gets his cut as the money passes through. No term or condition is too unreasonable when both money and people are nothing but commodities.

Hello I’m Maître Jacques and I’m the servant of the house (well.. the only one that does anything around here …) I'm under appreciated and over worked! I’m handsome (lie) eligible (lie) and I have no problems telling the truth! If I could leave The Miser's household I would but we are in a recession and times are hard. I’m hungry, obsessed with food and my role is to educate all of you as to the inequalities in life……. I have no time for love (as if…) and I tolerate the rich but only when they pay me!

Harpagon…a tyrant, usurer, household and family dictator. Exploits all, even his own children, for gain, whilst penny-pinching to protect his beloved money. A widower looking for his next loving wife….as long as she has a dowry. Suspects all, trusts none. Caustic, sarcastic, neurotic - what’s not to like!

Meet La Flèche, Cléante’s valet and Harpagon’s scapegoat, portrayed by Bruce Cannell.

La Flèche is very aware of his position and duties. He is extremely fastidious not only with Cléante’s appearance, but his own as well.

Honest, reliable and dependable, his devotion to Cléante supersedes his self-motivation. He doesn’t see Harpagon as having any power over him. And he is willing to go to any lengths to promote his master’s interests.

For the first time in NZ, see Sean Foley and Phil Porter’s Olivier-nominated adaptation of Moliere’s classic comedy.
Harpagon hoards his money from his spendthrift children, while planning to marry them off for the greatest reward.

But his children have their own plans, while the servants have plots of their own. Cue duels, swordfights, and secret identities, until things come to a head with the theft of Harpagon’s beloved money.

Bring laughter and colour to your winter evening with this b***y, fast-paced farce, a critique of austerity as relevant now as the 1600s.
