Wishing all our florists the best of luck prepping and creating Mother’s Day bouquets. We would say so, of course, but it actually is my true belief; Flowers ARE the best option as a gift. It’s a potent visual representation of the wonders of nature and our human connection to it. And, unlike other stuff, it doesn’t over stay its welcome gathering dust or ending up in the back of a cupboard, it just gets enjoyed and filed away as a wonderful memory. Ps: this is my very last post as your humble flower merchant de mode! My successor, Rebecca will take over the reigns. Introductions coming soon. It’s been an absolute pleasure creating content here! ❤️❤️

I’m so inspired by autumn/fall colours atm. I’m into burgundy/maroon JUST as much- so will do an arrangement in those colours next. This was easy; kingsday rose, mother of pearl rose, and various pomponi gebera and gerbera.

Sometimes you need to add something a bit kitchy to add an edge to things that are too pretty? Do you agree? What I used here is a brand new gerbera called Electra! It’s only just started flowering.

My friend just bought a house and the previous owner was/is a gardener extraordinaire; so the pickings are plentiful and I’ve been allowed to plunder! The ridiculously gorgeous hydrangea is from Sally Shuker (Flowers at 58 in Buckland) though- close-up of it with gelato spray rose. Salt-glazed pottery is a recent find from the opp shop.

In situ, as they say; I’ve loved this vase/dish with the flower frog inside so much-basically I keep those dried hydrangeas and then replace whatever is with it with something else when they wilt. I’ve kept the thorns on Mansfield Park, because this display kind of draws attention to them and it adds an edginess to it. I’ve commissioned a local potter to make me more interesting pottery vessels with built-in holes so I can just keep sticking things I find in and it doesn’t require foam/wire/frogs- will post when I get them.

Sometimes customers send me photos- and this was different! Instead of gift wrapping a bottle of gin (it looks like Aperol! Which I love- so the gin must also be good?) she did a flower arrangement around the top!

An open Akito. Akito is extremely popular for this exact purpose because it’s a very pure white and it’s small so it’s light in weight to pin on delicate fabrics. It’s also super pretty when still closed. Model: Evelina.

I’m so into ‘foraging’ vessels and bowls at the moment. It facilitates making something out of nothing- it feels like styling an outfit rather than doing fussy arranging- and I feel like the end result looks so artistically considered when it’s actually uber laissez faire. Peach Avalanche = Rose perfection 👌 The gardenia(from the garden), whilst visually imperfect, smells absolutely divine. I used a glass flower frog for the arrangement, which is far better than wire that scratch and stain the glazing on vases or oasis. (I know in Ikibana you aren’t meant to use either!)

Garden bounty! The gladioli fell over and grew towards the sun resulting in very Dr Seussical twists- ‘proper wonky ware’, as my friend Alex would say. The gerberas are perfect for this time of the year because they are festive and last a long time. The pomponi is so similar to dahlia as you can see compared to the little red dahlias.

My policy is ‘one for them -one for me’ when it comes to present shopping- so into the ‘for me’ bag went; lizzies and peonies! They go with, quite honestly, an unrivalled rose; Mansfield Park and some very open (I heart them blown!) Avalanche.

Peach Avalanche = Rose perfection. The gardenia is a pick from the garden and is a little imperfect, but it’s fragrance is so intoxicating. (Side note: the arrangement only required a small glass flower frog, no oasis or wire balls that scratch or stain the glazing in vases)

Everything is open! I might post a few of these walk-about videos as I get the opportunity only once a year and it’s indescribably stunning.

You could say I (and WE) went to a bit of effort for this little flower arrangement done on the kitchen bench! It took a good 5-7 years to establish my garden(to pick from) and years of investment in glasshouses and our gorgeous crops to get here. Sometimes I feel I never tick everything off the to-do list, but if in doubt prioritise planting, because wow look at what happens. So satisfying to look over old photos and see the progress.

Moving into Monday!

We have a knack for scoring the bestest back packers. There’s too many legends to list here because we’ve had many awesome people over the years. But here is a video featuring our latest guests; Eva, Ondrej, Jiri and Stepanka. All Czech. They bolster our workforce from time to time and we benefit from the various skills they contribute.
