INCLUDE YOUR CULTURE - This Tifaifai quilt was a gift to Athena from the women in her Polynesian family. Hand-made and highly treasured, it was very precious cargo for the helicopter flight to Cecil Peak. We love the mix of traditional and non-traditional elements here!

Kia ora from the celebrant team at Your Big Day! It's Māori language week in Aotearoa... But what does "kia ora" mean?

If you only remember one Te Reo phrase for your Tāhuna (Queenstown) holiday then this is the one! Kia ora is an informal greeting, wishing well to others, a way to say thank you, and an expression of agreement. You can use it to say hello in shops/bars/restaurants, include it in your wedding invitations, start emails with it or insert it into your wedding speech.

SOUR, BITTER, HOT & SWEET - Tasting the four elements is inspired by an African wedding tradition practiced by Yorùbá people. During your ceremony you’ll taste four different flavours which represent four different stages of marriage...

SOUR 🍋
Acknowledges the imperfections of marriage and your commitment to supporting each other no matter what. Traditionally the sour flavour is lemon but you could also use sour lollies or kimchi.

BITTER 🍫
Represents feelings of rejection, denial and jealousy and a reminder to support each other to feel safe. Vinegar is the traditional flavour here but you could use unsweetened cocoa, dark chocolate, or kale.

HOT 🌶
Symbolises passion and your commitment to express your desires. A taste of cayenne pepper is traditional but you could substitute that for jalapenos or spicy flavoured potato chips.

SWEET 🍦
This always comes last to demonstrate that all the efforts of the bitter, sour and hot phases are worth it in the end. Traditionally honey is used for this element but you could choose any sweet treat you like such as strawberries or even ice cream!

Yasmin & Ollie asked their guests to choose the foods for each element in advance. They were surprised on the day with kimchi, dark chocolate, the world's hottest corn chips, and their favourite sweet chocolate. They also chose to sign a bottle of local Queenstown wine to commemorate their day too. And after their ceremony they snapped a selfie with YBD celebrant, Emily!

HOW TO MAKE SNOW CONFETTI - A must for snowy winter weddings!

1. Have your guests make a snow ball by packing snow together in their hands (gloves recommended)
2. Make sure your photographer and videographer are ready, then countdown... 3, 2, 1!
3. Guests throw the snowball and kick it in your direction so it breaks up into little pieces.

This means you get showered with beautiful snow confetti rather than a ball of ice to the face!

JUST MARRIED JOY - a shock lockdown the night before Belinda & Gavin's wedding led to multiple postponements and eventually a complete change of plan. When their day finally arrived the weather was wild with heavy rain and gale force winds. Seriously, the conditions couldn't have been further from ideal, but these two legends weren't phased at all 💜

We all got wet and windswept ( and Dawn Thompson Photography) but most importantly Belinda & Gavin got MARRIED!!

REAL MODERN WEDDING VOWS - When asked for images of real YBD weddings to feature with their modern wedding vows article, Nicole & Tash came to mind right away!

In our initial video call to start planning their ceremony, Nicole and Tash were pretty quiet and didn't give too much away. They had no real ideas on what they wanted from their ceremony and expressed that they would need A LOT of help writing their vows.

But, after some reflection on their story so far and intentional thought on their future together, they used the YBD wedding vow templates to pen their vows. And I was absolutely BLOWN away!! They were the perfect mix of sentiment and humour and I only had a handful of suggested edits for them. Basically, they nailed it!
