Waitangi Day Reggae In The Gardens

It is 1979 and Bob Marley and the Wailers are back from their tour of Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and the U.S. to play Reggae Sunsplash in July and a benefit at the National Arena to honor the International Year of the Rasta Child on Friday, August 18, 1979. Also performing is an artist who recently went solo from his very popular reggae group – Burning Spear. So yes, Bob Marley and Burning Spear have shared the same stage, in fact, they shared it twice in 1979 – once at Reggae Sunsplash and again at the International Year of the Rasta Child concert.

Interesting note, Marley and Spear hail from the same province – St. Annes. It was Marley, only ten years earlier in 1969, who directed Spear to follow music as a career and introduced him to Clement “Coxsone” Dodd at Studio One. Spear, along with his band mates, show up at Studio One and record a strange sounding tune with The Black Disciples called “Door Peep Shall Not Enter.” The rest is reggae history.

Waitangi Day 2025... (formerly Surreal) Queenstown CBD - 2pm till Midnight

SOLO BANTON - REGGAE/DANCEHALL CHAMPION - LIVE & DIRECT

After a long career in the reggae music business as a soundman and producer, Solo Banton became a vocalist and recording artist through connecting with Kris Kemist of Reality Shock Records. Immediately recognised for his vintage deejay style, lyrical ingenuity, charisma and irrepressible personality, Solo has impacted on bass music and culture far and wide.
He has three albums in partnership with Reality Shock Records. In 2010 “Walk Like Rasta” dropped, “Higher Levels” in 2012 and “Old Raggamuffin” in 2019. In 2024 he released his fourth album, “In This Time” in collaboration with France’s Irie Ites crew. He has also released two EPs, “Music Addict” with Jahtari in 2011 and “My Music” with Dubkasm in 2020.
With countless more hit singles, Solo has worked with the likes of Mungo’s Hi Fi, Maffi, Conscious Sounds, Necessary Mayhem, Roots Factory and many others, creating a series of musical anthems.
Solo is sought after on the touring circuit, renowned for high-energy, exciting performances delivering a musical message. He has performed all over the world from Asia to Africa, Europe to the Americas.

its HOT HOT HOT out there, dam we hope the weathers gonna be as sweet as the last few days here in QT for Waitangi day, so due to all the council and Rec grounds being either 'pre-booked' or unusable, we've decided to take over our mates bar LOCAL (formerly Surreal) for the entire day and night (2pm till Midnight), as opposed to doing our standard midday till 6pm...but wait theres more, this year as a special treat to the QT massive, we've imported world renown REGGAE/DANCEHALL Singer/Performer SOLO BANTON to hit the stage and entertain us all....hang tight and we'll get all the info about the day and tix sales up on here asap CHUR

Blessed & honored to be able to mahi with my father THE MIGHTY ASTERIX on this next release!🤲 I'm one of the lucky few who gets to do what they love with the people they love!🙏 Dad taught me everything I know and I'm still trying to reach those heights of his mic work! The way he can jump on absolutely any riddim or beat and make it dope still amazes me to this day! The King of NZ Soundsystem no doubt!

This next single 'Stylee' will be our first official release together, and I can't believe it's taken this long but I guess we were waiting for the right riddim!! Big up for the riddim and it's funny coz his son Pep is also on the riddim too! The way the universe aligns things buzzes me out bro!

I'm into giving people their flowers while they still around and just want to big up my pops for everything in music! Been a pleasure working on this project! Many more to come!!
