Fiji Day 2021 8th/9th/10th October 2021
Fiji celebrates 50years of independence in year 2020. The South Pacific nation became a sovereign state in 1970 after almost a century of British colonial rule. Fiji Day – the national day of Fiji, celebrated on October 10th – marks the anniversary of both Fiji’s cession of Britain in 1874 and attainment of independence in 1970.
The year 2020, Fiji celebrated for the first time ever in Aotearoa New Zealand, in a place highly significant and respected to the people of Northland and New Zealanders because of its history and the Treaty of Waitangi. Fijians of all denominations came together as a nation and were welcomed onto the whenua at Kororareka Haratu Marae. The deep nostalgic history of of Kororareka‘s colonial past will remind Aotearoa Fijians of their first home capital of Levuka, which also suffered the same fate of relocation to Suva. A brief stroll along the strand and around the village awakens the soul and transports you back in time.
Due to popular demand, our Fijian community have gladly put together an exciting program for this year’s celebration, because the 10th of October falls on the Sunday most of the activities will take place on Friday 8th and 9th completing with a close down church service at the oldest church in New Zealand on the 10th.
