I've got a lot of questions lately about this season's events and why it has been a little quiet...
Well, we are in full swing to prepare and change the venue. Oh gosh those weeds aka pine trees made it to a stunning 30 meters plus in length... 😬 I had to change my tactics how to tackle them. Samson and I found a great way to deal with them and we make big progress. The ugly "front of house" is going next and will be replaced with something more suitable/seatable 😋 to be prepared for the permanent stage to come next year. We will also move the kitchen space to a different location to be able to manage the trees behind it, also next year as part of the remodeling.
We also planted a lot of natives on our west boundary 🌳🍄🌴
I'll be posting about our re:connect festival soon. Also there might be a NYE event happening in cooperation with someone else...
Our website is still in the making so we will have to wing it via this channel one more time 😉

Lately we've had some great comments on how healthy our fruit looks like 🙏

This year most of our trees produced for the first time and all I can say is I completely forgot how much better organically grown fruit tastes, not even mentioning the nutritional value...
So far we had hardly any disease except on the trees which aren't heritage fruit trees. Go and figure 😜
Looking after your orchard also makes a big difference as well fed and watered plants can fight off disease much easier.
It's like with us humans, if you look after your health by keeping harmful chemicals out of your body and put in the good stuff your immune system can deal with almost anything!
To support our plants I use occasionally liquid fertiliser from our worm farm or/and garden teas I make myself. Besides that twice a year we also use the biodynamic preparations bd500 and bd501 and occasionally also cpp.
Today I toddled around the farm with two 10 litre watering cans and spread around 1,200 litres of comfrey tea, all day. Holy cow, what a job! 😄
I love looking after our plants this way as I can say hello to every single tree, look at them carefully and consider their needs.
This could also be the reason why our fruit looks and tastes the way it does 🙏❤😉

All possums have been removed, rats and stoats being trapped as we speak

As I've been busy with the infrastructure on the land all season I had little time to grow food. Not ideal I know but what can one do, we haven't found the helping hands we need just yet... and look what our kids found on a slope near our old veggie garden. Must have escaped and we had no idea those purple potatoes were growing there... This large box came of three plants and we've got a lot more 😊
When you look after the land, the land looks after you. Thank you mother earth! 🤗🙏❤

I started drip watering the logs yesterday to keep the mycelium growing. Even we had month and month of light drizzle/rain and everything should still be wet the logs started drying up... So far it's looking pretty good and using usnea helped as well so far

The Spirit of Kaukau a Tara

In winter of 2016 we purchased the land and two days after the change of ownership I started already to deal with an estimate of 8000 plus pine trees. Those trees were planted about 11 years prior to our arrival and because no body ever thinned them out nor pruned them the timber of those trees is no good for anything but making mulch to create top soil. To deal with the amount of trees we decided to purchase a man-size chipper to handle the weeds... Since our place hasn’t been occupied before everything on the land was and still is pioneer’s work.

In Autumn 2018 we found a name for our place and Kaukau a Tara Organics was born.

Our goal is to provide customers with organically grown fruit and vegetables, but also passing on knowledge by teaching our permaculture methods of growing healthy food. In our philosophy it all starts with the improvement of the soil through biodynamic approach. Furthermore we looking to host workshops in earth building, gardening, off grid power solutions etc.

It’s the beginning of May 2020 and so far I have planted 52 fruit trees and countless natives to replace all those pines and provide our orchard with shelter. Most of our fruit trees in our food-forest to be are heritage trees.
