Album of the Week - Duga 3

Gianmarco Liguori With Murray McNabb & Kim Paterson put out a limited release beautiful and complex album in 2012 titled Duga-3 on Sarang Bang Records

Combining influences from and aspects of jazz, drone, electronic and ambient music this is a fabulous release and copies of this original pressing don’t come up often.

Album of the Week: David Kilgour - Feather in the Engine (reissue)

One of the finest reissues of 2024 and such a fabulous album from David Kilgour.

Originally released in 2002, A Feather in the Engine followed two full-band efforts 1997’s David Kilgour & the Heavy Eights and The Clean’s 2001 album Getaway and is thus almost startling in its intimacy. Recorded at home and mostly alone (The Verlaines’ Graeme Downes provides lush string arrangements), Kilgour once called A Feather in the Engine “the most solo LP I’ve made.”
Interpolating his genius for guitar pop through acoustic guitars and gorgeous instrumentals, its melodies unfold gently.

Lovingly remastered (and in some cases remixed) from the original tapes by Tom Bell at Port Chalmers Recording Services, the vinyl reissue of A Feather in the Engine is a crucial opportunity to rediscover one of David Kilgour’s best records, a handcrafted gem that perfects guitar pop’s past while pointing to its future

Recommended for fans of: Flying Nun, The Clean, The Bats, Neutral Milk Hotel, Pine, Low and beautiful guitar albums everywhere

2024 Badgers Den Records Presented - A round-up.

With the year coming to an end we thought it was time to have a few round ups. In 2024 we were please to play a small part in bring some exciting live acts to Te Tai Tokerau. In January we had Good Habits & all the way from the UK to start the year off with a beautiful evening of alternative folk and fun.
On a chilly night in May with the Southern Aurora over the waterfront we presented an evening of dark country infused folk with We Mavericks & Velvet Arrow
And lastly in October we brought Lower Bar Collective north for the Whangarei Fringe and filled the tunnels at the Whangarei Quarry Gardens with beautiful improvised guitar noise and music.

Thank you to everyone who has come along to see a show and support original and interesting music - Keep your eyes open for some exciting plans in 2025 presented by Badgers Den 🦡

Album of the Week: Nippon Girls - Japanese Pop, Beat & Bossa Nova 1967-69

A fascinating & fun celebration of the female side of Japan's 1960s pop scene. Reissued on yellow vinyl by ACE Records this compilation is highly recommended to girl group fanciers, J-pop groovers and anyone else with a keen ear for eclectic sounds.
