FOR YOUR IKAAALAM: What Are Our Duties This Good Friday?

HERE ARE SOME RELEVANT INFORMATION THAT CATHOLICS ARE EXPECTED TO OBSERVE AND FULFILL THIS DAY:

• FASTING - Catholics aged 21-59 years old are obligated by Church law to fast today. Fasting in the Catholic Church is less rigid, which requires the maximum of one (1) full meal only in a day with two (2) smaller meals that does not make up into a single full meal when combined.

• ABSTINENCE - Catholics aged 14 and above are obligated by Church law to abstain or prevent the consumption of meat and meat products from warm blooded mammals and birds such as beef, pork, chicken, turkey, etc. Meanwhile, eggs, products and condiments from animal fat
and milk (butter, etc) are permissible. Allowed are seafood, fruits and veggies.

• YOU MAY TAKE A BATH. There is no ecclesiastical prohibition on taking baths and showers on this day.

FOR YOUR IKAAALAM: Why is Holy Thursday also called "Maundy Thursday?"

The term "Maundy" is an Anglicized (made English) term that originated from the Latin word "mandatum" which means "command." It is on this day that Jesus Christ celebrated the Passover Meal with His disciples, and he gave some final commands to them which they are bound to follow and perform later on. These are the following commands:

1. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash each other''s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. (John 13:14-15)

2. "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another." (John 13:34)

3. "And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.
In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you." (Luke
22:19-20)
