The “June Bride” idea originated from Ancient Rome, honoring the goddess Juno, the protector of women and marriage. Spanish colonizers brought this belief to the Philippines during the 16th century, and it was absorbed into local culture.
Marrying in June was thought to ensure happiness, fertility, and prosperity for the couple. Over time, Filipinos embraced the idea that June weddings are lucky and romantic, especially under Catholic influence.
The Catholic Church played a huge role in shaping Filipino customs, including weddings where June is the month associated with St. Anthony of Padua (June 13) — the patron saint of lost things, including lost loves!
Many Filipinos believed that marrying in June would bring the saint’s blessing for a lasting and faithful union. It also follows May, the month of the Flores de Mayo, when churches and communities are especially festive and decorated — perfect for weddings.
