Established in 1895, the theater, initially called as Teatro Junquera, was a popular venue for Cebuanos to enjoy various literary-musical programs, operas, stageplays, vaudeville and early silent movies. America. Vicente Sotto staged his play “Ang Gugma sa Yutang Natawhan” in 1902. Sometime in 1915, Don Jose Avila purchased Teatro Oriente, renaming it as Cine Oriente. By 1920, Cine Oriente became the premier playhouse for silent cinema in Cebu. With this, Don Jose began his esteemed career in show business that earned him the title as “Father of Cebu Cinema”. In March 1930, Cine Oriente premiered The Singing Fool, A Warner Bros. Part-Talkie musical drama that was the first ever sound film to be experienced by Cebuanos. Between 1941 and 1945, Cine Oriente was destroyed along with many areas of the city with the Japanese invasion’s advance. Several years after the War, Oriente was reconstructed in 1952. Don Jose’s younger son Attorney Jesus Avila, with full energy and optimism, step into the cinema business. Cine Oriente was totally burned to ruin by fire in 1969. In 1984, a new Oriente was inaugurated after a major renovation. In 1995, Oriente underwent another extensive renovation. The other theater was demolished to become the mall that you see today and Oriente became the first movie theater in Cebu City to use Dolby Digital Surround Sound in 1996. On May 2013, Cine Oriente closed for renovations and was re-opened several months later in December 2013 to feature new digital projectors for high-definition quality viewing experience.
