According to a source, the IBF-ordered fight for a world title eliminator between Joey Canoy and former world champion Ginjiro Shigeoka is close to a deal, save for minor details that are currently being negotiated.

Canoy, one of ’s best pugilists in the 105 lb-division, is currently on a 6-fight winning streak with 5 knockouts to his credit. Canoy was initially ordered to fight DianXing Zhu (highest rated contender) but the latter reportedly turned the fight down.

The winner of Canoy-Shigeoka will be the mandatory challenger for Pedro Taduran for the IBF strap. 🇵🇭🥊

Our pick for the Filipino Fighter of The Year for 2024 is two-time world champion Melvin Jerusalem!

In 2024, Melvin Jerusalem became a two-time world champion after upsetting and dethroning then undefeated WBC Champ Yudai Shigeoka via Split Decision in Japan (Jerusalem scored two knockdowns against Shigeoka), and in the process, ending the Philippines’ world championship drought.

Just a few months after, Jerusalem staged a homecoming fight for his mandatory defense against WBC #1 contender Luis Castillo in a lopsided 12-round affair which had the champ winning by unanimous decision in front of his countrymen.

To end the year, three Filipinos got big knockout wins abroad over the weekend! 🇵🇭🥊

In Japan, ’s Jeo Santisima extended his winning streak to 3 after stopping local favorite Hiro Ichimichi with 3 seconds remaining in the 3rd round. Santisima improved to 25-7 with 21 KOs. In the same card, ’s .llover got his biggest win of his young career after stopping Tulio Dekanarudo in the opening round to win the interim OPBF Bantamweight title. Llover is still undefeated in 13 fights with 8 wins via KO/TKO.

In the far west, former world champion got his third win in his last three fights after stopping Bryan Mercado in Long Beach, California, USA. Magsayo is currently ranked in the top 5 in all 4 major sanctioning bodies and is on pace for another world title contention.

’ card delivered and exceeded expectations with all of their three fighters scoring TKO wins last night in the IPI Compound, Mandaue Cebu—Cristian Araneta (Round 1), Ramil Roda,Jr. (Round 6), and Alexander Fredriksson (Round 1).

In his professional debut and homecoming fight, Fredriksson aka “Showtime” scored a quick knockdown with a perfectly timed left straight in less than 20 seconds after the opening bell en route to a round 1 TKO win. The former Swedish amateur standout is looking to bring more eyes to the higher weight classes as he sets his campaign at 130-135 pounds.

In the co-main event, Roda started off sharp with crisp combinations, heavy body blows, and good movement, rocking Ian Donaire on numerous occasions in the opening round. According to Roda, he had to fight through severe cramps which started in Round 2 as he was constrained to fight flat-footed and against the ropes. Despite the injury, Roda showed a lot of heart going toe-to-toe with Donaire for 3 more rounds until the latter failed to answer the 6th round bell.

No. 1 Jr. Flyweight (IBF) Cristian “The Bomb” Araneta got another round 1 TKO victory after flooring Thai Sanchai Yotboon three times in the main event. Araneta, a quick starter, scored an early knockdown with a counter left uppercut that caught Yotboon by surprise. This was the beginning of the end for the Thai visitor as he was unable to recover and turn the tide against The Bomb, forcing the referee to put a halt to the contest. Araneta is in line to fight the winner of the rumored Masamichi Yabuki-Jayson Vayson bout for the IBF Jr Flyweight strap.

Former IBF world champion Jerwin Ancajas gets back to the winning column following a dominating performance in his featherweight debut against Thailand's Sukpraserd Ponpitak. Ancajas overwhelmed the Thai early, even scoring a knock down in the opening round. The Thai, seemingly frustrated with Ancajas, resorted to unconventional tactics and takedowns which eventually led to an anti-climactic disqualification win in favor of Ancajas in the 5th round.

Zip Sanman’s superstar and reigning WBC champ Melvin “Gringo” Jerusalem brought out every trick in the book against tough erstwhile undefeated No. 1 contender Luis Castillo—power, volume, footwork, defense, you name it!

After an aggressive start from the challenger, Jerusalem made Castillo pay and hit the canvas following the Filipino’s patented right hand that also dropped previous champs Taniguchi and Shigeoka.

Jerusalem proved that he is elite and a force to be reckoned with in the 105-lb division. Per Jerusalem’s manager, they are looking to unify against WBA champ Niyomtrong or any champ in the division who is willing to step up.

Following last weekend’s TKO win, Charly Suarez clinched the #1 contender spot in the WBO’s Jr. 130-lb division for a chance to go up against Mexican WBO world and interim champions, Emmanuel Navarrete and Oscar Valdez, respectively.

The “old” amateur stand out continues to defy Father Time and proves to be a problem in the division, with top contenders pulling out at the 11th hour in consecutive fashion against the Davao native.

JUST IN. Melvin Jerusalem gave the phrase “trip to Jerusalem” a whole new meaning after flooring and dethroning Japanese KO-artist Yudai Shigeoka twice en route to a split decision victory. Jerusalem showed poise and effective counter punching early in the fight, mixing body shots with straight right hands, the latter doing the most damage against the lefty Shigeoka. While Shigeoka rallied in the championship rounds, his efforts weren’t enough to overcome the early lead garnered by Jerusalem. Jerusalem is undefeated in his 2 title fights in Japan against local favorites Taniguchi (2023) and Shigeoka. Now a 2-time world champion, a win in a unification match against fellow champions at 105 lbs could catapult Jerusalem’s status in the pages of Philippine boxing history.
