PROFILE
In the 1950's the idea of establishing the University of the East Dance Troupe was first concieved by Ms. Shea, former Assistant Physi
cal Education Director and a well-known Philippine Dance Luminary. Under the President Francisco Dalupan, the University agreed to provide scholarship to the Dancers and to shoulder the expences with its major productions. De Leon took over in the '60's as Director. Dalupan appointed Professor Corazon Inigo as Dance Director. She created for the company a rich repertoire of jazz and modern dance pieces as introduced by guest Ballet Master Manolo Rosado. In 1974 Gener Caringal, a former member of the dance troupe was appointed Dance Director and Choreographer, thus providing the company 14 years of training and performing opportunities both locally and internationally. Jojo Lucila, also a former member took over the position in 1988 until 1996, while Brando Miranda became Director in 1997. In 1998, Gener A. Caringal was requested by the University to once again assume the position of Dance Director after he choreograph the Opening number of the University Athletics Association of the Philippines ( UAAP ). He was consequently appointed as Chairman of the University Committee on Socio-Cultural Activities (UCSCA), which was absorbs by the revival of the Office of Cultural Affairs (OCA). Caringal strengthened the training program of the Troupe, Revived and created a repository of Philippine Folk and Modern dances and increased the troupe's membership to more than (70) dancers. After two years and several major productions, the groupe was invited to represent the Philippines to a series of dance festivals in Malaysia and in 12 key Cities in Spain under the Auspices of the Council of International Folklore Festivel (CIOFF).
