Boholanos in ancient times believe in nature spirits called diwatas that live in forests, huge trees, rocks, springs and caves. Some spirits are malevolent, and thus must be appeased with ritual offerings of food, drink and tobacco. The benevolent diwatas, however, are believed to help people in need. When one enters their forest homes, you know they are there because of the appearance of creatures that are of extraordinary beauty and appearance. Never catch them. Boholanos of old actually believe that one could borrow from them clothing, plates for banquets and other items for free - but one should always return them or else disaster will visit him. Even these days, the belief in nature spirits who must be respected are still held by many Boholanos. This could explain why our environment is still in better shape like before.
