WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE TO BE ON THE SURFACE OF A COMET?

Using data from ESA's Philae spacecraft, citizen scientist Matthias Malmer rendered a colorized version of the surface of comet 67/P Churyumov-Gerasimenko, where the aforementioned spacecraft landed in 2014. The rendering also added depth cues to give it a slight three dimensional feel, with the rocks' colors fading into the distance. Also visible is one of the legs of Philae, which landed upside down near a crevice on comet 67/P.

[SENIOR HIGH] SIZE DOES MATTER: BOULDER, PEBBLE, SAND, AND MUD

When you refer to a rock or sediment as a "boulder," following the Udden-Wentworth scale that geologists use, your rock is understood to be at least greater than 256 mm (or 25.6 cm). The same scale also strictly defines what "pebble," "sand," and "mud" is in terms of sediment size. The term "cobble" is also included in the scale: it refers to the size of sediment in between that of boulder and pebble, that is, between 64-256 mm.

Why the need for these strict terms? That's because sediment size matters--it implies a level of energy in which the sediment settled down or got carried away. In turn, the energy helps geologists infer the likely environment where the sediment came from or deposited, which is helpful in reconstructing ancient environments.

BALIK-TANAW: ANG TRAHEDYA NG SPACE SHUTTLE COLUMBIA

Sa eksaktong petsang ito, 22 taon na ang nakalilipas, nang sumabog sa langit at nawasak habang naglalakbay pabalik ng Daigdig ang Space Shuttle na Columbia ng NASA na ikinasawi ng lulang pitong astronaut nito.

Kita sa telebisyon ng daan-daang libong manonood ang malagim na sinapit ng mga astronaut na sakay ng Columbia. Ayon sa resulta ng imbestigasyon na inilabas noong 2008, may malay pa ng ilang segundo ang mga astronaut habang mabilis na nagkakawatak-watak ang sakay nilang behikulo. Ang ultimong kumitil sa buhay ng mga astronaut ay hindi ang pagsabog mismo kundi ang biglaang pagbaba ng air presyur dahil sa nipis ng atmospera sa altitud kung kailan nagsimulang magkandagutay-gutay ang Columbia.

Ang ugat ng pagsabog ay natukoy na galing sa piraso ng foam na nahulog sa may bandang kaliwang pakpak ng Columbia noong inilunsad nito. Nagbuo ito ng butas na bagaman hindi nagdulot ng insidente noong pagdating ng mga astronaut sa kalawakan ay siya namang dahilan ng pagpasok ng maraming napakainit na hangin sa pakpak ng space shuttle habang bumibiyahe ito sa atmospera pabalik sa lupa. Sa huli, bumigay ang kaliwang pakpak at natanggal at sunud-sunod nang nagsitanggalan ang mga bahagi ng Space Shuttle.

HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR EVERYONE!
大家春节快乐! 恭喜发财!

Today is this year's Chinese New Year, also known among Chinese as Spring Festival (春节). Because of the need for the moon-based Chinese calendar to synchronize with the solar year, the date it falls on each year varies. What is definite is that it is always falls on the first New Moon that occurs between the 21st January and 20th February of every year.

Like the Western Zodiac, the Chinese also have a "zodiac" system but instead of corresponding to month-long periods, these zodiacs correspond to a year in the Chinese calendar system. This year is the year of the Snake (蛇), while the previous Chinese year which ended yesterday was the year of the Dragon (龙).
