YAEL RASOOLY
(Tel Aviv)
The Performer, the object, and the secret in between

25th November 2018
12:30 - 13:30

Born in 1983 in Jerusalem, Israel, Yael was trained primarily as a classical singer and went on to study theatre design in London. She began developing her unique theatrical language at the School of Visual Theatre in Jerusalem, where she specialized in directing, puppetry and design, and graduated with excellence. Since 2006, Yael has been creating independent theatre works and performs at leading international festivals throughout Europe, the United States, South America and the Far East. Yael’s theatrical language is based on a multidisciplinary approach, combining different forms of theatre, puppetry, visual art and music.

In this artist talk, Director performer and puppeteer Yael Rasooly will discuss the various and diverse aspects of her training, practice and performance. Through presenting her own work, as well as a glimpse into her inspirations in the field of contemporary adult puppetry, Yael will raise issues at the heart of being an independent theater creator- finding the deep source of motivation for a project, the process of creation and working methods, partnerships in creation, the transition from the art student life into the "real" professional world, forming an international platform to present your work as well as to sell it, the festival circuits, carving your own path in a multidisciplinary discipline, and yes, to dare to dream up your personal artistic path and pursue that direction with personal conviction.

The presence of directing in the theatre training for puppetry arts

24th November 2018
17:00 - 17:30

Puppet theatre director, actress, cultural manager and professor of puppet theatre acting and directing for puppet theatre. In 2001 she enrolled at the ATB in Białystok and graduated in 2006 with a degree in both specializations: puppet theatre acting and directing. Since 2010 she is teaching puppet theatre acting and directing at the University of Theatre and Film Arts in Budapest.

How can you teach directing in puppet theatre for adult in the academic way in 2018? How can it be possible to motivate the new generation who want to learn about the process of directing in puppet theatre through their university studies? What is teacher’s real focus point? What is the difference between directing in the theatre training for puppetry arts and other arts? What kind of teacher should teach directing in puppet theatre? What does an exam mean for a student in theatre academy? I'm looking for answers to this and similar questions in my presentation.

Rosario Perricone, is the Director of the Antonio Pasqualino International Puppet Museum of Palermo (Italy). A Professor of Cultural Anthropology, Museology and Museographical Displaying at Palermo’s Fine Art Academy; an expert of the history of folk traditions, theatre and visual anthropology at the University of Palermo; President of the Association for the Conservation of Folk Traditions and the Association Festival of Migrant Literatures; Director of the Ignazio Buttitta Foundation. He has coordinated and managed projects aimed at a wide fruition of cultural heritage and puppet theatre, helping the exchange between practitioners and audiences, traditional masters and contemporary artists also through the use of new technologies.

The Opera dei Pupi is Sicilian traditional puppet theatre. It originated in Southern Italy and Sicily during the XIX century and underwent a deep crises in 1950-60s. The efforts made by the Association for the Conservation of Folk Traditions – Antonio Pasqualino International Puppet Museum of Palermo (Italy) to conserve and restore the related items, engage the puppeteers in the challenge of the difficult dialogue with the contemporary world and the younger generations, conceptualize and organize innovative projects – also using the more updated technologies, have been awarded many times: in 2001, Sicilian Opera dei Pupi has become a UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity; since 2014 the Association is a UNESCO accredited NGO and in 2017 the Museum has received the ICOM award as “Museum of the year”. Some of these projects will be focused on as an example of strategy for the safeguarding of puppet heritage, a strategy that combines the tangible and intangible aspects of this wide world: from the conservation of the biggest collection of pupi from Palermo, Catania and Naples to the restoration projects; from the traditional techniques for the construction of pupi to the “construction” of a virtual puppet through augmented reality.
