‘Puerto Ricans who fled to Florida after Hurricane Maria are not registering to vote’

“The freshest data reveals that there has been no surge in new Puerto Rican voters. During the nine months before the hurricane — January through September of 2017 — there were 343,000 people who registered to vote in Florida, and 18 percent were Hispanic, according to Daniel Smith, the chairman of the political science department at the University of Florida.”

My gratitude to the Universidad Politécnica de Puerto Rico for inviting me to deliver the commencement address for their graduation, which was delayed nearly two months because of Hurricane Maria.
700 students graduated on July 26th at the Convention Center in San Juan, in the same room where nearly one thousand first responders, government employees, and volunteers spent weeks planning the rescue and response after the storm.
The university was started 52 years ago by the Vasquez family, which still runs the private, accredited, institution, today, with additional campuses in Miami and Orlando.

Records suggest Puerto Rico saw a leptospirosis outbreak after Hurricane Maria — but officials won’t call it that

Puerto Rico’s own records list so many cases of the bacterial disease leptospirosis that officials should have declared an “epidemic” or an “outbreak” after Hurricane Maria instead of denying that one occurred, according to seven medical experts who reviewed previously unreleased data for ...
